44.1 or 48?
« on: 2 Dec 2008, 12:34 pm »
 hi, all!

i'd like to store some tracks on my hdd. uncompressed, of course. i am using Nero to get this job done and Winamp to play it. there is an option that lets me choose between 44.1 and 48 khz.

- what's the big difference?
- what's the benefit if i choose 48 ?

i will output it digital via USB which is connected to the BDA-1.

thanx,

al.

For purposes of upsampling, I'm a fan of multiples of 44.1 (88.2, 176.4, etc). If you have no plans to do so, then either 44.1 or 48 should be fine. Rip to both and see if you have a preference.

CD's are 44.1k, so there wouldn't be a benefit in ripping them at higher rates.

If the source is 44.1, ripping at 48 is likely to make things *worse* Resampling well is *hard* -- the math is alot trickier than most people realize -- and by "most people" I include many of my colleagues in this field.

The re-sampler in the BDA-1 does it right -- rip at 44.1, and let your BDA-1 do the hard work of resampling. (If you don't have one, James will refer you to an authorized dealer :-)
