AV123 X MTM
« on: 11 Apr 2022, 02:04 pm »
There is a local pair of AV123 X MTM for sale for $100. They have the old, non encore , tweeters.  Curious if the new tweeters for the X series would be able to be added as far as the size in the cabinets and possible crossover changes.

They look to be in nice shape and probably worth the money just for the cabinets and seems like a nice place to start tweaking from once the new tweeters are available.

Would love any thoughts and feedback on the speakers in my room and upgrade options.

11x19 room. Speakers would be 3-4 feet out from the wall. I will be 6-7 feet away from the speakers with 6 feet behind me.
Blue sound node, amp camp amps, mono at 16 watts and an Elekit tube pre. Room is treated with bass traps, diffusion, and absorbers at the first reflection points. And yes the tv gets covered for serious listening 😁

Thanks
Scott

The encore tweeters are too small to fit into the "classic" tweeter mount. An adapter bracket will need to be made in order to mount the encore tweeter, as well as modifying the cabinet to fit the tweeter + adapter depth.

Here's someone who did what you're proposing, you would need to follow a similar path in order to swap the tweeter.

How do you know if the X MTM has the Encore tweeter or not? I found a pair of X MTM's locally and I'm considering getting them and we surprised Danny was involved in their design.  Pics attached,

Those are encores for sure. They are cherry veneer. The easiest way to tell different tweeters is number of bolts. Encores only have four. Older classics have eight bolts. As Hobbs pointed out, size is different too but unless you have them next to each other, it’s not as obvious.

Thanks!

Awesome thank you for the feedback.  So now the biggest question of the name, how good are these speakers really? Worth picking up?  Would they need any mods?

They're solid speakers, they'll easily play down to about 35Hz in most rooms.
You can pretty easily improve them by upgrading the stock polycaps with Sonicaps and add a set of tube connectors, you could also replace the original wiring as well.

Thanks again, are these basically the same as the X-MTM Encore Kit then?  If not how are they different?

You are literally "losing money" if you don't buy those speakers.  Any financial advisor would agree.

$100 even for classics is a good deal. You can upgrade those as well. If the encores are $100…. Pick those up immediately. Throw fully upgraded crossovers in them for another $300’to $400 and sit back and enjoy the best sounding $500 speakers ever created.

It was the original poster that had $100 pair, the guy here is asking $285. Maybe I can talk him down to $100.

I think the cabinets themselves are worth that much let along the drivers!

$250 is worth it for those. If you can get them $200 even better. Still best speakers for price you can get.

They're essentially the same quality as the base level X-MTM Encore kit.
The only real difference will be that the wire is stranded instead of solid-core an it uses a traditional crossover PCB.
