Looks cool, but depth variation and horizontal effectiveness are limited.  Here's a more efficient design:

Each block can be painted in different colors.

Hi JLM,

Unfortunately your link does not work for me.  Google says there may be a typo in the URL.  I tried different spellings but to no avail, could you check it please?

It appears the Blackbird Studio uses the same manufacturing technique, choosing a different pattern and amplitude.  That large of an amplitude has to add a lot of absorption.

The original wave pattern could also be used as an artistic scatter plate over some OC 703 with amplitude and period tuned as desired.

That's beautiful, but I'm sure there is $$$$ involved.

One interesting diffusor is the Geofusor from Auralex.  Sound demo's seem interesting:

Now we know why there is a universal shortage of MDF.  :o

"... Blackbird Studio C’s open floor plan concept was originally designed by multiple Grammy and TEC Award-winner, producer, engineer and inventor George Massenburg and Dr. Peter D’Antonio, founder of RPG Diffusor Systems, Inc. The room’s design focuses on sound diffusion and is created from a 10,000-page Excel spreadsheet based on acoustic diffusion algorithms. The result is a mix of art and function: 138,646 individual sticks of formaldehyde-free MDF wood in four-foot-by-eight-foot sheets, with no two being the same size or length. This studio contains slightly more than 100,000 lbs. of wood on the walls. ..."

Better image of the build technique:

Dusting that room would be no fun.

Yes, just one "r", sorry.

Deeper elements don't help, only cost material, take up space, and adds weight.  As it is, the prerecords design weight adds up (23 pounds per 18 inch square) if you consider using multiple panels.  So a nice 4.5ft x 9ft panel would weigh over 400 pounds.  But provides a solid two dimensional diffusion solution from 1000 Hz on up and a relatively easy DIY project.

The maximum depth of the wells determine the low end of the scatter and diffusion frequency ranges until practical restrictions on room size kick in.

QRDude can give you a feel for what different depths do to scatter and diffusion frequency ranges on 1D and 2D diffusers by entering different well depths.

It looks like some acoustic companies are already doing similar designs.

Looking at that pattern is giving me dizziness.  I would have a hard time concentrating on music with that staring at me.

Any thoughts on making a skyline diffuser using a 3D printer?

That would probably use a lot of "toner" =).

Don't know if would be cost effective, but with the inflated cost of building materials this year, the delta maybe smaller.
