6SN7GTB Tung-Sol Tubes
« on: 18 Dec 2008, 12:23 am »
In my Mapletree Audio 2A SE Linestage RCA 12SN7GTs are too stark and GE 12SX7GTs are too polite.
Thus I am considering these from http://www.newsensor.com/ProductHighLight.aspx?ProId=1162 on a whim. Described as ...

Super linearity, low noise, and full performance ratings make this one of the best 6SN7 tubes ever made.  The sound signature is on par with 5692 types.  Excellent driver tube in high-end audio applications.

What do you think?

Any opinion on these in my pre? Or just in general?
Any opinion on the web site as a source?

Thanks.

These are Russian.  NOS or used Tung Sol's are US made (not trying to be patriotic here, just that these are the modern copies, not original Tung Sol).   I'd go for NOS instead.  My $.02

Current production 6SN7s are not nice compared to NOS.  NOS 6SN7GTs are much better sounding to my ears than NOS 6SN7GTBs.  Of the latter, there are 3 brands that aren't that bad: Tung-Sol, which are dry and detailed, Sylvania, which are more colored, but not overly so, and Raytheon, which are less colored than the Sylvanias.

You say you find the 12SN7s "too polite".  Both the 6SN7 and 12SN7 are generally polite tubes in that they substitute refinement for SLAM.  I'm not sure there are any 6SN7s that fit in the "slammer".

Maybe you got the wrong type preamp.  I find 6922 preamps to be aggressive and rough.

Finally 6SN7GTs are not cheap. B's cost less, but are still in the $30-40/tube range for a decent used one.

12SN7s and 6SN7s should sound the same if of the same make and such.

The Tung-Sols were a bit laid back for my tastes, but everyone has their own thing.  I'm using grey glass RCA 12SN7s which are nice for vocals but I've heard others not prefer them for instrumentals.

I have a pair of NOS (1964) Sylvania JAN (Joint Army Navy)  6SN7WGTA that sound way better than the Sovteks that came with my amp when I got it. I paid $65.00 for the pair. This doesn't mean they will sound good in your amp, only you can decide that.
