Title: Vinyl Resources of the Bay Area
Post by: R_burke on 12 Sep 2006, 11:51 pm
Cut it out Mortsnet   :x
You're going to have me moving or at least visiting NorCal to check out the vintage gear shops   :D

Just don't tell me if there are any good vinyl shops too......

The Analog Room has an excellent selection of quality vinyl
and there are several "used" shops that sell vinyl - Streetlight Records, Rasputin Records, Amoeba Records   :icon_twisted:

Great idea for a new thread: Norcal sources of vinyl.
I frequent Rasputin's in Pleasant Hill, Amoeba in Berkeley, Mod Lang and Down Home both in El Cerrito.  While vinyl isn't their main thing at least they have some.

The complete lists of Bay Area vinyl resources and audio dealers will be posted on the BAAS website around October 1, once our webmaster Ori returns from abroad.

Welcome to the two newest BAAS members, who seem to have heard about us from this forum. For those who missed the earlier post about the Bay Area Audiophile Society and our three upcoming demos, complete information is available at http://www.planeteria.net/home/BAAS

Have you been to the new store yet?

Just opened Saturday, BB, wasn't able to go there yet.  It's 6 or so miles from me and I passed it in travels to scope it out.  Looks to have plenty of free parking in front  :thumb:

What about 101 music in SF?  I haven't been there, but did win one of their ebay auctions.

http://www.yelp.com/biz/101-music-san-francisco

East bay people: there used to be a great vinyl only music store specializing in jazz on between 40th and 50th on Telegraph in Oakland.  Does anybody know if it's still there?  I find it interesting that according to the list compiled so far, the east bay seems to be the best place for vinyl.  Even amoeba is originally an east bay only store.

You may be thinking of Grooveyard Records on Claremont in the Rockridge area of Oakland.Mostly Jazz lp's and some cd's.Really no bargains or anything special to speak of.Alot of vg- or worse lp's at twice the price they should be.Might find some interesting one-sy's or imports as the owner used to own an independent jazz label distributor,Rick Ballard imports. No haggling on the lofty prices, the guy will just whine. The original owner when the store was known as Berigan's was a joy-always lots of good stuff in good condition and god forbid,he might cut you a deal on a large purchase.I have seen some of the same records there for 5 or 6 years!Last year there was some poor tourist paying 40 and 50 dollars each for beat up late issue Blue Notes, even with the weak dollar it was a bad deal.I was in the East Bay in November and record shopping was an all time low as far as selection and quality. You can still find some nice bargains at Amoeba, and some nice "mistakes" like the hundred dollar record for 99 cents.Yes that still happens, just less than it used to.You might try the vinyl room at Down Home music in El Cerrito.Maybe a few surprises there! This year i am getting a definite vibe that the good records may all pretty much have passed hands. You want records go to Boston and there is a nice shop in Providence R.I. Get out of the record store mindset and get creative.I found an amazing stock of lp's a few years ago in  a Hudson N.Y. antique store. If you start talking to people and asking questions you might turn up some leads.I mean talking to older people who still have records in the closet.Swap meets, flea markets-go early.Great luck in San Luis Obispbo Ca swap meet.Try Fresno,Sacramento.Get cards printed up that say " i buy records" pass em' out at those flea markets and you will find some interesting stuff.Of course you can sit on Ebay all day and buy 10.00 records with 5.00 shipping, that's really just an armchair safari, get out and have an adventure!

jazzcourier,  Thanks for your ideas.  The place I'm thinking of is/was definitely on telegraph, not college,  between macarthur and koryo korean bbq.  (40 something).  I know the place on college and I agree.  Even the place on telegraph, despite being in a somewhat gritty neighborhood, was not as inexpensive as one would have hoped.  As for armchair safari, sometimes the stars align and you get something very cool.  The early nineties was probably the best time to buy vinyl, but there must be some bargains left.  Like you said, antique stores, etc...  I'm more of a music lover than an audiofile, so you'll find me digging through dubious piles of 50 cent bargains in the tenderloin and buying an album that has one track I like, or a beethoven symphony that I want because I had the same recording on cassette many years ago (Herbert von Karajan with Berliner Philharmoniker -- not a scratch!).

 Yeah!
Keep searching those bins for those 99 cent treasures -People are giving away great classical records now, like they were giving away all those high priced Soul Jazz records in the eighties.Don't forget your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, talk to the people in the back and try to find out when the "donations" are put out,and yes, maybe something like a box of donuts might grease the wheels and get you some valuable info or maybe even a call.My luck at the donation stores has never been good, but you just keep looking.

Jazzcourier, funny you should mention donation stores.  I was at goodwill today.  Paradise for a barry manilow fan.  I did manage to find a nice ragtime record (southland stingers doing Joplin's Palm Leaf Rag, pristine copy, jaunty numbers) and Gielgud reading shakespeare (I know, not really music, but hip nonetheless).  There was a lot of wealth of classical, much of it with 60s cool jackets, but mostly scratched.  At goodwill, condition is a primary consideration.  The price is 1.19 -- no tax so you get a penny back for 1.20

There's also the Groove Yard in Berkeley, it's on Claremont just off the highway on the Oakland/Emeryville side.  It's small, but worth a visit.

Re: Alex T, jazzcourier, maybe even Brussels-
Groove Yard was apparently in Jack London Square in 1987, then at 48th and Telegraph from 1991, and has been in the Greater Rockridge Area– just a stroll down Pedestrian Way to Zachary's– since 2002.

I just was hipped up by orientexpress about a local metal only record store across from amoeba in SF.
It is very small but dedicated to hardcore metal.
New and used lp's, picure disks and local metal band vinyl.
The guy who runs it is named Stone and is very cool.
The store is called Shaxul.
Did I mention it was metal only?
Cheers, Bill

Dave's Record Shop recently moved to 1404 San Pablo Ave (near Camelia St.) Berkeley. A little south of REI and across the street from Stella Nonna restaurant.

Bandcamp record store opens Feb 1st at 1901 Broadway, Oakland.

Sorry about the pun, but for the record...in the North Bay, there is no Earthwaves records in Cotati, and Vinyl Planet is no longer, but there is a newish record store in north Petaluma (forget the name), and there is also the longstanding Last Record Store in Santa Rosa.
Thrift stores are great, but finding jazz is always a problem--damn jazz lover's coveting/collecting  :duh: not so for classical, rock, etc.
Always a cheap thrill to find stuff....

The Music Store at 66 West Portal Ave. is a funky packed shop in San Francisco that has a quite variable vinyl section up on its mezzanine.
