A Mercury LP with great sound,  Respighi  Ancient Dances and Airs on the Golden Import series.  Although these are not as collectable, they are as good or better than their more famous American pressing brethren.

I've found Golden Imports to be a mixed bag. I'll add that to my list. I've been choosing Netherlands pressings with Mercury/Phillips, they seem to be the top choice?

Yep, the Netherlands pressings are high quality for Mercury.  I've had such mixed luck with Phillips, I usually avoid them.

I only go for the ones of something I want, or that's recommended. That way it's hard to be disappointed. The ones I don't like are random ones I grab from record stores, usually.

Sometimes on Discogs you can search by engineers and such. But really sometimes there is nothing else. Believe me, I want everything to be a SAX/SXL or something, but that's limited and the prices our outrageous.

How is the quality of this pressing?  I'm a Bella Davidovich fan, but don't see many of her recordings available.

Plenty good enough for listening. It's like other Phillips, it doesn't have a *zing*, as they seem to want you to have a fatiguing stereo to make up for it. Steve Hoffman recommended anything from her, which as it turns out is basically only a few Phillips releases.

While rummaging through the most recessed and hidden bins at Banana's Records in St. Petersburg, Fl., I discovered this mint, seemingly unplayed lp on the German Nektar label. Not your typical Western classical music of course, but part of a long cultural tradition in Japan. It is extremely well recorded and is both musically and sonically a treat.

Marc Aubort (well, and/or his team, you can't tell when it's just his company name). If he worked on it, it's probably not bad. I'm not saying he's the best, but it sounds plenty good for me to spin. I try not to let performances be ruined by the sonics or medium quality... but I find it does happen, I have limits. That's why I make the effort to try and cherry pick even in the less prestigious labels. Also you can get a mint one under $15, so can't complain there.

Not the best mastering ever, but strangely nice compared to later Phillips. The piece is worth it.

Occasionally.  Usually for jazz, trying to find a specific pressing that doesn't break the bank.  Hard to do.

The best approach is to have been born in the '30s and to have started collecting records in the '50s when they were only $2.98. Can't help you now, I'm afraid.

I have about a thousand or two classical Lps (wild guess on the no.)  I wish I could get to you guys somehow. I don't listen to them any more. Been there, done that, and I'm not going back.  Anybody coming to Wyoming any time soon?

How soon is soon?  I could be persuaded to go to this years RMAF, then just another day to Wyoming.  Then two days back to Abilene.  Could be done.   :eyebrows:

Joaquin Rodrigo  Fantasia Para Un Gentilehombre on Musical Heritage Society.  MHS 1274

I have so much respect for the thousands of lp's that Musical Heritage Society pressed over the decades.  So many minor works that might never have been widely known.  This is such a wonderful piece, often overlooked by the glare of Rodrigo's more famous compositions.  Typical clean MHS pressing of a young not so well known Ernesto Bitetti and the Madrid Orchestra.  Also Albeniz, Falla, Torroba, and Villa-Lobos works.

MHS pressings came from all over the place.  I know they re-issued much of the Lyrita collection.  Many of those were pressed by Decca.  Look for the unknown English composer William Baines played by Eric Parkin.  Died just after WW1 of TB at about 22 y.o.

I have Baines piano music on CD. One time I wrote to Chandos telling them they should record some of Baines's orchestral music. (There isn't much, but what there is has been highly praised.)  I got a reply something like this.  "We have referred your message to Richard Hickox for his consideration."  Nothing came of it.

I was a charter member of MHS when I was in high school, circa 1963. When they started they only issued imported Baroque recordings, most from France but some German recordings, esp. good ones of Bach cantatas. Does the name Helmut Krebs ring a bell? A couple years later they sent around a long questionnaire to members asking what other kinds of music they should try to issue. I was then in my Schoenberg/Webern/Berg loving phase of late high school years, so I told them to give us some of that music.  Not sure if they ever did.

Since we are on a MHS roll,  another good one is Twelve Spanish Dances played by Alicia de Larroche (who else?)  on MHS 1518

Excellent music, excellent performance, pretty clean pressing... what's not to like.  Besides, Granados had the best mustache of any composer!

Falla-"Nights in the Gardens of Spain" Gonzalo Soriana piano
Rodrigo- "Concierto de Aranjuez" Narciso Yepes on guitar
The National Orchestra of Spain conducted by Argenta on Decca/London CS 6046

Picked this up the other day because.... well, you just don't pass on a nice London blue back for 2 bucks.
But it's not my favorite of either piece.  Instead pick up a de Larrocha for Gardens and Paco de Lucia for Concierto.
The Paco de Lucia is nearly non existent in the US... get the Angel Romero on 45 rpm Angel Sonic Series.

Grieg Sonate en mi mineur, Pieces Lyriques, Ballade en sol mineur  on Pathe'/EMI   Aldo Ciccolini
This one is kinda hard to find... not even listed on Discogs.

Gave this one a listen, good stuff. Not perfect but good.

I picked that Grieg up because I'd never seen the Sonata on vinyl.  I've always been fond of his work, so two bucks for an unknown was a good bet.

Marcel Dupre at St. Sulpice    Bach Six Chorales,  Fantasia in C min, Fantasia in G maj

1959 recording in a HUGE cathedral.   A difficult space to master, but done well by Ms. Cozart and Mr. Fine.

Another version of one of my favorite pieces.  Julian Bream does a respectable job, but not the best on this Concierto de Aranjeuz.  The Vivaldi is very nice.

I really need to listen to Mahler more.  I've got a lot of his music, but seldom pull it out of the shelves.

Just got this in,  Connoisseur CS 1366
Ivan Moravec  Chopin 24 Preludes Opus 28.    These are pieces that every piano student practices, and gains a love of how emotive these little pieces are.  And some are stunning... #1, 6, 7, 22.   Those are the ones that I played, so fortunately, as a kid, and marked me for life.
Moravec carved out a career as a Chopin specialist, and Connoisseur Society is a vastly under rated label.  Their vintage classical is every bit the equal of RCA, Columbia, or Mercury.

I know this post is a bit old. I'm in Australia and i have one seller i buy from regularly. He is selling off his collection mostly they range from VG+ to unopened mint. Most are $1-2 each and free postage if you spend $50. I think you can guess i have been doing a lot of buying much to the dismay of my wife.

Great Rivals-  Fernando Sor and Mauro Guiliani
Robert Secrist, guitar
The music of Fernando Sor predates the typical "Spanish" sound, but is still distinctive and shows a languid reserve than can border on Spanish melancholy.  I'm a fan.

Finally, they are gone. A guy drove all the way from Chicago to pick them up. Thank goodness.
