Wife and I were listening to Stones a couple weeks ago and heard a nice tenor solo on the 'Tatoo You' album. It was Sonny, he solos on three tunes...

I've been listening to Sonny for 5 decades, mostly on his early '50s sessions, as sideman with the best of the best.
He is a very spiritual man, as all the great jazzers are.

I always loved this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW2aDwXO7Dg) recording.

Robert Mugge did a documentary on Sonny, "Saxophone Colossus".
I've seen it and it's definitely worth checking out.
He also has a book out and documented his time with Sonny, "Notes from the road"'
also highly recommended.

I was lucky enough to see him live at Massey Hall in Toronto.  A friend told me that he has good and bad nights, and he was having a good one.  Amazing.  The opening to Old Cowhand was always one of my audio test tracks.

Musicians who play horns usually have good days and bad days due to their lungs and general physical strength, unless they are young, also the tenor takes a lot of air to move.

@Syrah ... agree 100%! My wife & I caught Sonny in Berkeley about 10-12 years ago ... he was in his early 80's. He started a little slow, but by the end his young sidemen had to play hard to keep up! Easily one of the very best performances we ever experienced.
