similar to HD 598 but Closed Ear ?
« on: 13 Apr 2016, 10:41 pm »
Hi, I'm looking for headphones with similar price (less than $150), quality, comfort, and sound as the Senn HD 598s but in Closed Ear.
Headphones that don't really need an amp.
I have a pair of 598s which I like but I also need some headphones that cancel outside noise and don't leak much sound.
Any recommendations ?

Thank You

I think Audio Technika has something in that price range that seems to be well regarded... ATH-M50 I think?

+1 on that one, Audio Technica phones are well regarded budget champs, the 40 and 50 series both have their proponents, but I'm not a ATphile so couldn't tell you what the differences are, but one or the other has better bass depending on who's talking, and some other stuff I can't remember.  I can tell you one thing, I've seen more beat up M50's and M40's that still work perfectly than any other headphone I can think of, very durable.

The M50 is a great headphone for the price, but it does not sound like the HD598. Almost all closed headphones in that price range have a "boxy" sound to them with emphasized midbass and either a withdrawn or emphasized treble.

From memory, the closest(ish) match I can think of would be the Senn HD238/239. The Shure 440 and Sony V6/7506 are maybes; they will isolate better than the 238 and are full sized, but start to get that boxy/boomy feeling. Putting 840 pads on the 440 will up isolation again, but likewise increase midbass.

Thanks for the replies.
I just got away from the 'boxy' sound when I upgraded to the 598s.
That boxy sound is most of the reason I upgraded.
I'll have to try to listen to some closed headphones before buying.
