max length of DC power cables?
« on: 18 Jan 2020, 05:51 pm »
Continuing on with my intended replacement of the cheesy smps for my fiber optic to Ethernet convertor.  f

I realized I have a HD Plex power supply with a spare 12Vdc outlet that could supply this cable convertor.  The convertor needs 12Vdc at 2Amps.

The only concern is the two locations are close to 45 lineal feet apart.  I can custom fabricate a 45' DC power cable feed, but was concerned if that distance may cause issues with resistance, or some other power loss (I'm not an EE).

Thanks in advance

I would find another solution.

The smaller the wire gauge (thicker) the less resistance for a given length. Consider that house wiring of 12AWG can handle 120 volts AC at 15 amps, you should be fine with about 16 AWG, maybe even 18 or 20 AWG.

On second thought.
It's just for a " Ethernet convertor".
That will work just fine. Take an AC extension cord and cut the plugs off it.

Awesome, I'll try it out.

Thanks for the quick replies.
