My main aim was to have a room correction DSP in my main setup. The Genelec 8260A came to me after I read through DigiPete on Computer Audiophile and his setup was an inspiration. http://www.computeraudiophile.com/blogs/DigiPete/ I managed to locate a dealer friend in town and had an audition. The most striking feature of the Genelec speaker range was that all of them sounded the same and the only decision the SPL requirements and room size would be the only consideration to choose among the speakers. The sound was flat and dead recordings sounded ... dead and good and average recordings sounded ... great and good. The addition of subwoofer in the sound did not do any difference to the sound.... WOW. Meaning the sound was just seamless. The subwoofer was turned off for the rest of the audition. I was very aware of the fact that the speakers were throwing out a very honest sound and I realised that some of the recordings were sounding crap. I researched hard on VST and AU plugins to make the sound a bit more acceptable on certain recordings. The speakers and stands were delivered in the afternoon and I had the cables and speakers up on and running in 3 hrs. The speakers stand and isopod allow a lot of flexibility for various positioning requirement. I have them set at the lowest height and it allows cables to be passed through the shaft and hidden away from view.... which I thought was a very good idea. The power cable length was just small and it could not be hidden away. The software required for AutoCal and Digital volume control was loaded. The calibration was easy with 4 presets to choose from based on the position of the speakers in the room. The Sound was unbelievable. They sounded so much better in my imperfect room. The sound was full and the recording did not need any plugins at all. My immediate reaction was from the Bass which was more than sufficent and enough than my previous setup. I realized that my earlier TacT M2150XDM was not able to power the Salk HT3 speakers enough to get the same performance. There is no love lost for these 2 brands since my revelation was for the fact that an Active system outweighs the performance of separates. I cannot imagine spending a great deal to get an amplifier and speaker to match perfectly from different manufacturers. Since the AutoCal is set to give you a flat response possible at the listening position, the frequencies above 5Khz were too pronounced. I have tamed that by DSP and shaping of the curve to be more softer after 5khz. The sound is way more presentable. This is just the first week of play with these monitors. I can highly recommend them monitors to any audiophile. This to me is the best way forward for me. I love these monitors. There is no need for a subwoofer at all. The frequency response in my room goes well below 20hz. Genelec is Great.
