Title: Your favourite television shows...
Post by: Laundrew on 21 Sep 2011, 12:04 pm
I was reading 1oldguy’s Kojak post in “What is your latest acquisition” and it brought back many fond memories of the television shows that I enjoyed watching many years ago. What television shows did you enjoy watching.

Barney Miller gets my vote for the fun side of the law.
It just so happens to have the funkiest bass song in a T.V show.
I don't watch much new anything on T.V anymore,it's just hogwash to this oldguy.

I could not agree more about TV these days. The Laundrew household is coming up to almost a year and a half with no cable or satellite subscriptions.

No regrets.

Welcome to the club.
It appears your as disgruntled as me. :thumb:

I never thought I would see the day that T.V would be something I no longer enjoy.(In it's current format.)
It's not so much the device since a T.V is a T.V., as there is no substance to what's on currently.
I prefer to indulge in the Classics.

I've gone through stretches (years) with no TV service. The one I started last week is, I feel, permanent. I've got a set of rabbit ears, so we can catch the news. There is not enough quality to justify a monthly fee, or the time commitment.

Well actually both.

The original series I grew up on and loved - I have the box set with the cylon shaped case - it's on DVD (never released on Blu-ray - that I know of).

The new series I found very interesting - it's deeper than the old series and makes staments on a number of social issues.  I have it on Blu-ray and it looks pretty great.  I loved the special effects.  I was a little let down by the finale - think they could have done a little more.

"... and makes staments on a number of social issues."

I think that Star Trek, the original series of course, also made many statements on numerous social issues of its decade.

HBO has been repeating Deadwood each night at 11 pm on one of their digital channels. They're up to Mr. Walcott killing the 3 whores. I wept when they cancelled it. Only other show I felt that way about when cancelled was Arrested Development.

HBO never shows The Wire. Did they sell the rights to BET maybe? Hate watching HBO shows on edited channels.

Too cheap to buy the DVDs, so please no lectures there.

No Reservations is the only TV show I look forward too, except new episodes seem to be getting fewer and further between.

I really hate paying the Dish bill every month but without it I can't get a single station, hopefully someday they'll go to an a la carte service which will let you order only the channels you want.

The Discovery Channel's "Modern Marvels" is my favorite show on television.

The Science Channel's "How it's Made" (features a number of Canadian company's.  Sadly, I haven't seen an episode on Bryston products")

I find MythBuster's entertaining, but fairly unscientific, at times.  It's tough beating Physics.

For old shows, I used to like to watch McCloud from the 70's and the Rockford Files.

Unusual topic for an audio forum.  But lots of fun.

I've been a tv fan ever since my parents brought the first set into our house way back in 1951 (it was a bribe to make us kids feel better about moving to a new city). I could go on and on about the literally hundreds of shows over the years that have entertained me.  But I won't bore you with all that.

Instead let me bore you as a tv critic focussing on current shows (Laundrew did ask for it, so blame him).

I don't at all agree with those who say there is nothing worth watching these days.  IMO in many ways this is a golden age of tv drama, mystery, science fiction and comedy.  A few examples of current shows that are for me well worth watching (in no particular order):

Glee (full of great music and sharp, seemingly nasty but ultimately good natured satiric humor;  with all that music, a good show to watch with a multi-channel sound system; the only weird thing is all those 30 year old actors playing teenagers)

Burn Notice (zippy action and adventure with lots of humor, where against seemingly unsurmountable odds, the good guys always win; Michael's gorgeous girl friend Fi is a hoot; every time a problem comes up she grabs her Uzi and declares that she knows how to take care of it; and Sharon Gless as Micheal's mom is fabulous)

Castle (almost like classic who-done-it detective mysteries, but very tongue-in-cheek; the lead female cop is ravishingly beautiful)

Dexter (a very, very dark show;  the so called law guy has his own way of dispensing justice to the murderers, rapists, etc., cleverly working way outside the law; but you find yourself rooting for him every time)

The Mentalist (another murder mystery show with very dark, even horrifying subtexts and subplots but well done; the hero Patrick Jane is a fascinating enigma)

Fringe (very far out but fascinating sci-fi;  where else can you watch two parallel universes battling it out with two versions of most of the lead characters - one per universe)

White Collar (zippy and fast-paced humorous drama about FBI guys fighting white collar crime with the help of a supposedly reformed con man;  the scenes of New York are breathtaking; you'll feel like your on a weekly tour of that fabulous city)

Two and a Half Men (making a comeback without Charlie Sheen; the ultimate in vulgar, potty-mouthed humor, but the the suggestive dialog and sexual innuendos are so well done you won't be offended; you'll be too busy laughing;  we'll see how the new version without Sheen works out)

Modern Family (very upbeat, feel-good show about real family values; of course the evangelical types won't agree, as it features, among other things, a gay male couple that adopts a young foreign orphan girl)

Vampire Diaries (I personally find this show much too intense; but a friend who is an avid tv addict insists that it is one of the best shows ever; and he should know)

Oh jeez, I'd better quit this tour of tv land before it become any longer.  But I again tell you - there's a lot of good stuff on tv right now.  Thanks for bearing with me.

I watch some football.
I watch Jay Leno, then Craig Ferguson.
I watch The Closer, then Stargate Universe on Saturday evening (Sunday12:00 midnight, 2am really)
not much else.
I like CSI the Las Vegas one.. but i do not search it out..
Most TV sucks.. big time.
Like the Bruce Springsteen Song, 57 channels and nothin' on
Cable is 300 channels of dreck.
When i did subscribe to cable, the few interesting channels, Discovery, History, did not make up for the mountains of total crap.
Now I am exclusively over the air..

Funny memories with the mentions of these old shows.
Makes me think of their theme songs. Which should deserve its own thread.
Peter Gunn- before my time, great theme song.
Mission Impossible
Rawhide!
Munsters
Love the Sopranos theme song
Horrible 60's sitcoms with catchy theme songs you can't get out of your head
Green Acres (for some reason this is the deadliest for me...Grrrreeen Acres is the place for me...)
Petticoat Junction (there's Uncle Joe, he's a movin' kind of slow...at the junction...Petticoat Junction!-why can I see the Staples Singers doing this number?)
Gilligan's Island
and the mindless dreck continues... :duh:

I was a huge Entourage fan on HBO.  The last 2 seasons or so weren't the same, as they got more serious and less funny.  I haven't watched the last (current) season yet, as I've been out of the house at that time, or we had cable/power interruptions (Hurtican Irene being on one them).

The best current show by far is Modern Family IMO.  Hope the don't mess with the format.

Family Guy is great too.  Never gets old IMO.

Seinfeld was a favorite, but it's getting a bit old now.  Only a few episodes left that I dong get tired of, and fortunately, they font over play those ones - Doup Nazi, Kramer taking karate, and s select few others.

The Office was hillarious the first few seasons, but I think they could only take "That's what she said," racial and sexist jokes so far before they got mundane.  Well, "That's what she said" has a lot of staying power.

Most of current TV sucks IMO.  I guess that's why I really like my DVR.
