I believe, in this case, that it stands for Graphic User Interface. Like, the thing you use and see to play music.
In answer to the OP’s original question, I’d likely try it. I’ve begun shopping around for a new streaming music service. I currently have Tidal because of MQA. But if that goes by the wayside, I don’t need Tidal anymore. Anything high rez will work, and Spotify may be just fine. Or Apple, or Amazon, or…..
And I could easily dump Roon. They’ve become something I don’t recognize. And all that means I could change out my DAC (won’t need a renderer).
Oh! The possibilities are endless!!!
