VCA level controls

Does anyone here have any experiece with VCA (voltage controlled amplifer) based level controls? I ask because the new issue of audioXpress has an interesting article on building a 6 channel volume/balance control for SACD or DVD-A.

The circuit uses Analog Devices SSM2018T VCA's. I have never built anything using these type of devices. I guess the question is, how much difference is there between using a VCA vs a couple of op-amps like many ss preamps do?

The author incorporated a master level control and trims for each channel. Very nice features for multi channel audio. Since the VCA is controlled by DC voltage, no AC signal is sent through the pots, allowing the use of inexpensive pots and of course reduced sensitivity to hum and noise.

Anyone else here subscribe to audioXpress? Just wondering if it would be worth building one to find out how it sounds. The author states he can hear no sonic degredation with this in the signal path, but I find that a little hard to believe.

Input? Ideas?

Thanks, Mike
