Anyone around here from NEO?
I'm in Akron!
Maybe you'd like to see a full color laser show?
-
Hey James,
I live in Akron. Took a gander at some of your posts and some of your projects. Impressive and ambitious work for sure.
William
-
Maybe we could get a cup of coffee at Angel Falls in The Square sometime! :)
-
Yeah sure. Send me a PM and we'll get together. If anyone else is out there, and want to talk audio. Chime in...
-
I'm in Westlake. I'd love to start or be part of kicking off a NE Ohio Audio Club.
-
James, please read your PMs, your urgent attention on your bouncing email address is required.
-
Cool! :D
My laser screen is right in the middle of my line source array speakers! :)

I still not know if I qualify as audiophile, more like music lover who tweaks a bit. I'm so low budget it is almost comical.

I hear ya. I mostly buy used equipment. Saves me a bunch of money.
-
James,
Looks like your doing it right to me. Push-Pull / isobaric designs get real low Hz. and can be startling at times.
-
I'm here in Northfield.
-
I'm in the Cleveland area. I'm in the process of making changes to my system, but have Von Schweikert speakers (sold my VR5-Annis, now running VR6 from my second system, upgrading to VR100XS). A get-together would be great.

I would like to hear my Lore's on some higher end amps and pre's for sure. I could only demo my "cheap and cheerful" system, though I have a Frankenstein cartridge that is pretty amazing I think.
-
I'm in Cuyahoga Falls, just north of Akron. Cool to see some local folks!
-
I would like to hear the Von Schweikert speakers for sure, I have a Modwright KWI-200 IA driving a pair of Selah Tempesta's Towers, anyone intersted to hear PM me.
-
Add me to the list. I'm near Lakewood Park.
-
I live in Hinckley. Very interested in forming a group.

Randy

i used to live in Akron. does that count !!

Grew up in Akron. Lived in Firestone Park (just sold my Mom's house last year). Went to Garfield High (before the Security Guards...) one brother still lives in the Park.

I am in Akron. Will be interested to join the local audiophile group :)
-
I worked in Akron for 13 years. At the bottom of Britain Road hill and I-76. It was a 105 mile round-trip every day.

Hey guys, this is so great! I'm currently in Bath, OH. Been all over the country but came full circle back to my roots here a few years ago :thumb:
It would be really cool if we could all get together nearby at a place with a very good sized listening room for all to attend. I can easily provide one of my four full reference systems, components and all, should someone want to put a gathering together in a large event space outside of an audiophile's homestead. Note: We may need a huge lift truck though if someone should ask me to bring my overt Epiphany line source speakers. Nothing beats 40 woofers and 42 tweeters for life size concert sound reproduction! :drums:
Cheers,
Eric Hider - dB Audio Labs

-
Eric, hey!! :)
That might be a great idea...find a space like a conf room or something that has decent sound and each of us bring stuff. I have 4 DSD DACS, gobs of eval USB cables, KSA-150 monoblocks, Concert Fidelity CF-080 preamp, Bent TAP preamp, etc etc. I could show folks my newest CAPS-Zuma-like server (Asus mobo, i7-3770S..dual pc Jplay setup...I will write a review on it soon).
Or we could hang at my listening room (see system) in Westlake....but not exactly central to these locations, however..
But I think the first one should be at an neutral site until we figure out size of group, etc.
-
Wow, more Ohio audiophiles! Sometimes I feel a bit alone.... I grew up in NE Ohio (boonies south of Ashtabula) and am now in Mount Vernon, although that is more like central Ohio. I still have family in that area and am up there frequently. I'd love to get together with some other AC people sometime. Obviously, I'm happy to bring along some ACA/Melody gear to demo at some point, but I'm also happy to just bring some food and my ears for when some other gear is to be the focus.
-
Yeah, I could grab Teajay's Melody 300B integrated....wow what a great piece. It would be great to have you up here. We met at CES, right? (I am Greg Graff's friend who reviewed his MG Audio cables, etc). I wasn't aware you were so close.
-
My gear consists of NCore mono blocks with some improvement mods such as custom internal wiring as well as a direct connection for the speaker wire (ala Ric Schultz), Furutech IEC's etc. I have Selah Audio DIY'd TRT speakers(all SS drivers), an Exasound E20 DSD capable DAC, an absolute mint ADCOM GFP-750 preamp(just bought it on Audiogon), a Paul Hynes SR3-12 Power Supply, etc, etc.
By the way Ted. Don't be volunteering your Bent TAP preamp until I decide you can have it back... (along with various balanced IC's of yours that I have been "borrowing").
Regards,
Randy

I hope you guys are as much of beer snobs and stereo sonbs so we can meet at Melt on Taylor in Cleveland Heights or the Bottle HOuse on Lee rd. also in Cleveland Heights. if we need to find a more southern spot let me know.
I race bicycles so I am out training many evenings and racing on weekends, but could do most nights after 9pm. I would be happy to start a mailing list too.

Columbus would fall at the midpoint between Cincinnati and Cleveland or Akron for me, approx 115 miles.

Yes, I remember that. I also found out Eric was nearby when we chatted at CES this past year.
I actually have that same Melody integrated in my own system. Everybody should definitely hear one. :)

I'm closer to Columbus, but I don't mind heading north. I know the Cleveland area very well.
-
Great thread!
Count me in. The summer is difficult to meet as I'm racing the sailboat. But in the off season that would be cool.
I'm in Central OH, just south of Columbus. Ted and I have met before but I thought I was the only audio person in OH beside Ted and Eric. Eric, I still have my Dodd 120's.
Let's put something together. My folks still live in the Heights area :thumb: The places you are naming had different names I'm sure but always up for a good Ale or Lager.
Woofersus, I would luv to get together to hear some Melody gear. Ive heard nothing but good things. We are a fairly close to each other.
My system is listed on the site.

There is a very high end purveyor here in Shaker Heigts that I have never been to, but I could talk to the owner about possible demos as well. My budget does not allow me entrance to his home, but I know some people who have bought from him before. I'll try and remember his name tonight.
-
I know Don Better very well. He is a good friend.
-

Do you think he would like to demo a dac or phono pre at a get together? Would be fun and good exposure for him and not much if a hassle.
Also would you all be interested in a meet like a vinyl Sunday event where a well sorted system is demoed with an entire album played through, no talking or gaps. Discussion after then maybe some more records or tracks played.
I also know a couple of Cleveland Orchestra musicians who might be able to discuss there recordings too.

I personally feel we need to walk before we run. Let's get together a couple times before we ask these others to donate, etc. We need to have a little bit of track record, and a better feel for what everyone wants. My $.02

You are thinking of Don Better, of D. Better Audio in Shaker Heights, never been to his house but he has mixed bag of gear as listed on his web site. What I mean is his gear is not typical of what can be purchased locally. his stuff is a little higher end. The best place to go IMHO is Hanson's in Dayton.

Agreed, but I usually run before I walk. Tends to make me sore too. Ha.
Anyways, get together in July? I'll see what weekends I have available.
-
Greetings NE Ohio:
I'm in Avon Lake and would be interested in jumping in on a limited basis to stretch my audio experience (extensive business travel). Let me know when you are getting together and I'll plug it in my calendar. I would be interested in listening to others systems and have others listen to mine and give their system advise. Running all lossless digital from a laptop thru a tubed Hagerman Chime DAC into a Bryston 4BST and Magnepan 2.5R's.

I'm working on electric Avenue by Jacox Road. Wish I had time to stop by.

From September thru March, I spend a lot of time in Cleveland Heights at the big ice skating rink.

All,
I have a TBI Millenia amp coming this week on tour. I do not have it for long. I have been struggling with soundstage and imaging with my Tekton Lores and though I believe much is room related, I am hoping the Millenia will be a match. My problem is I do not have a reliable pre amp right now. If anyone would like to play with it, it arrives Wednesday or Thursday. I dont race that week so any weeknight between 8-11pm would work for me or possibly the weekend later in the day.
But I would appreciate it if anyone has a pre we could use. My Optocoupler sometimes shifts the image heavily to the left making it useless for comparison (though it has a pleasant sound or lack there of). And my only other amp now is a Yamaha DSP integrated without main pre puts.
Ray
PM for address and phone.
-
I bet you know Jim Wright then.
I know a Cleveland Hts. area Jim Wright that would sometimes skate with us. Being a speedskater and bike rider, I have known lots of bike racers over the years. Most of them are now getting old.

Racing? What, How, Where?
We have a big sailboat race this weekend at Edgewater. Cleveland Race Week.
What boat do you race? We used to have big numbers at CRW when I grew up. I really have not raced there in a while as my boat does not have any Regatta's in Cleveland.
-
The J/24 Grafix.
That's an older 24 foot keel-boat class.
With almost 6000 boats world-wide, it's not as popular in Cleveland now as it was 15 years ago.
-
I know the boat, EYC right? Used to race with Rolf and company on J 34 off and on. Raced J 24's quite a bit but not in Cleveland.
The new J70 looks to be the Hot Ticket?
-
TBI Milllenia arrives today as well as the Marantz Receiver which I may use as a pre. I dont like to unplug and replug RCA's from the back of single inout amps. First night will be with the Tekton Lore's then I will experiment with the Pioneer BS22LR's which are the Cheap and Cheerful hit speakers.
Anyone is welcome to swing by tonight. Message me with address. My fridge is full of IPA's and Labatts.

Go Red Raiders!
Well now i am conflicted. I grew up in Cleveland Heights till '76 then Shaker Heights till college in '84 then back to Cleveland Heights. So GO Tigeraiders!
-
I only have the TBI Millennia a couple more days. If you want to hear it message me. I am making myself deaf with Copland's Rodeo and Appalachian Springs on Telarc CD so you might be able to hear it from your houses. I am in Cleveland Heights off of Fairmont.

Just curious if anyone can recommend a good repair shop in the Cleveland area? I need to repair a sticking drawer on a Sony SCD XA5400ES.
I have heard good things about the guy at Play it Again Sam, but they're backed up like mad (Bernie said "it could be months" or they "might be able to squeeze it in." I'm hesitant to leave it there with that much uncertainty. Audio Craft also does repairs, but I have not heard much about them.
Anyone else you can think of who knows what they're doing?
Thanks in advance...
Jon

You may want to check with Sound and Vision in Woodmere.

Called them, but they don't do repairs. Thanks anyway.

If you are not bound to NE Ohio, Elite Audio in NY is very good, I have used them myself and had good results.

Any interest in a GTG? Winter is approaching and we'll be really starting to fire up the Big Rig again.
Located in Central, OH
Go BUCS!
-
it is cold now and not outdoors as much. I'm game for a get together in NE Ohio. About all I have time for as for travel. Prefer a weeknight as my weekends are still always packed.
-
Let me know what's happening. My only weeknight commitment is Wednesday.
-
I'm in Cleveland Heights. Used to work for Telarc & have some of their old speakers they used, Infinity RS 4.5's & a/d/s 1230's. Also draft beer in basement! Would love to get together for listening on weekends!
-
A long time ago, I did a few recording for Telarc/Advent when my good buddies Skip Kelly & Corby Grubb weren't available.
Friday evening I'll be in Cleveland Hts. marking the speedskating track at the rink.
-
I'm Cleveland Heights too and I love beer. Count me in.
-
So who is going to be able to host. I can always make a trip up to visit my folks in Shaker.
I would luv to hear those Infinity's.
I'm located in central OH
Go BUCS!
I was just in town over the holiday before heading to "The Game" in Ann Arbor. Drove by the Hts Ice Rink, used to have some great hockey wars over there.
-
Were those hockey games in the old rink or in the new recreation center rink that they built around the old rink in 2001? We are having a small speedskating race Saturday afternoon in the big Olympic sized rink. Normally we have away to big meet, but other major event kept switching dates until there was no time available at Hts.
-
What a coincidence! I play hockey in the Heights men's league! Hockey, audio & beer -- that's what it's all about! :thumb:
I could host a small gathering over the holidays. How would the weekend between Christmas & New Years work for you guys?
-
Well crap-I go on my first vaca in 6 years at that time. My basement system is getting better all of the time, but I have no reference as I have never heard a stereo better than mine, but that is not saying a lot. meaning Ive never heard a seriously tuned/expensive audiophile system since maybe 80's Audiocraft days (Infinity and Macintosh).
-
I remember them as well. Infinity speakers great tweeters with the warmth of the big Mac Amps, nice combination.
The Hockey wars were in the old rink..I would like to see the inside of the new one. 8)

We have 3 speedskating competitions in Ohio this winter. [1] Tomorrow at Cleveland Hts. [2] Saturday Dec. 28 in Columbus [3] Late February at Cleveland Hts.
-
If I'm not up north in Cleveland, please post the time and venue for the Columbus event. I would like to try and attend.
:thumb:
-
I'm trying to get a link to the printed info that I have for the Columbus "Chiller Reindeer Games" speedskating meet.
What I do know about this low level meet.
Saturday December 28, 2013
About 8AM to 1 PM
At Chiller Easton Ice Skating Rink
More information soon at:
http://www.ohiospeedskating.com/ (that's my page)
http://www.thechiller.com/index.cfm?pageName=page&pageid=105
As for last Saturday's Cleveland Heights event. I expected it to be a low key event with Ohio skaters plus Western New York and Pittsburgh skaters. But we got many from the D.C. area and a few more from Florida, Salt Lake City and Calgary! Each racer did 7 races in 5 hours. (that's a lot of racing in such a short time). Lots of good competition and no bad crashes.
-
One of the moderators is local and is willing to discuss SACD and hi rez music as a possible first get together. I am leaving Dec. 26th and would love a get together before then.

Hey guys -- some of you have replied about my proposed gathering the weekend between Christmas and New Years. Since many of you won't be able to make it, I thought we should re-schedule it when everyone is available. How would the following Sunday, Jan 5th work for everyone? No Browns game that week! ;-)
-
Sunday the 5th works for me. Looking forward to it. Thanks
-
Count me in. What can I bring? Beer, scotch, a hard drive of hi rez music, one of my many cheap chip amps and SLA's, my (soon to arrive) used hemp driver Omega Super 3's?
-
Thanks raysracing, I should have the beer & scotch covered! I have a few chip amps sitting around, but the hi-Rez hard drive sounds good -- especially if I could borrow it for a little while! ;-)
-
Sunday Jan. 5th is good for me also. Speedskating practice that day has been cancelled (something about a big hockey tournament).
The speedskating meet in Columbus this Saturday Dec.28 has been downsized to a practice meet and my grandson is playing in a soccer tournament this weekend (North Olmsted) so we are not going to Columbus.
-
OK Guys -- we're ON for this Sunday, Jan 5 at 2pm! My address is 3241 Washington Blvd, Cleveland Heights, Oh 44118. We're right behind Heights High football field. Please park on the opposite side of the street.
I'll have plenty of beer & some light apps. Everyone is welcome!
-
I can't make it for this one. I leave for CES on Monday and have family over on Sunday, etc. Next time...thx
-
See you Sunday at 2!
-
Sounds great. I'll be there as long as I am not sick. Been out of town and sick as a dog.
-
FYI I am selling my speakers so if anyone wants to hear them before leaving the Heights area let me know. I'll get them set up before I head to the gathering. Hit me up about them on email or PM. They are Tekton Lores.
-
The TV weather people are hinting at a big snow storm Sunday afternoon.
Way of topic:
The Olympic Short Track Speedskating Trials will be on TV this weekend. At NBC & NBC-SC (Sports Channel).
Most if not all the competitors have raced at the Cleveland Heights rink.
-
I am in Shaker and would also like to come. Was thinking of bringing my Parasound ZDAC to compare to something more expensive. Thanks.
Jon
(FWIW, I am seeing 3.5" of snow predicted by Accuweather for Sunday. I guess we will see how it goes.)

Johnathan if we cannot do it at this meeting I am game for a DAC shootout and I can host that. I am building a music server and hope to have a couple DSD files and a DSD DAC in a couple months as well. Probably a cheap DSD Dac like the Schitt or iDSD (or whatever it is called).

-
I have four different DSD-capable DACs inhouse currently, and about 12 TB of DSD files (both stereo and multichannel) so I'm game for a DAC comparo (I dislike the term shootout but who cares I guess; it sounds like a quick and dirty test where there is ipsofacto one winner, that one DAC will win all aspects, which is not usually the case at all).
-
That would be great, Ted. Looking forward to it.
-
On Sunday's weather. Jeff Tanchak at Channels 19 & 43 thinks that during the day 3 to 5 inches (the higher amount on the West Side for a change). Then 6 to 10 more inches Sunday night.

ted I see ALL of this as a magical opportunity to listen to MORE music on more equipment, regardless I suppose of a clear winner. So for me it is all good.

Anyone running a PC Based music server? I could use another head in the game. I bought a chassis, core i3 CPU and as rock MB. I have quite a few more parts to buy and will need help installing drivers, getting everything recognized. I am a super fast learner, but lack the basic knowledge. Anyone game to help?
It will run Server 2012 if I can make it work with the motherboard, Win7 if not. Jriver media center.

-
Great time listening to music and meeting you all. I am typing this from my new music server which I hope to keep tweaking and show off at a future event. I believe everyone was excited to host the next event so lets set one up!
Thank you bbaxter and your wife for the hospitality and the (ouch my head) draft beer. There is still one room to audition at your house though.
-
My daughter and I built a pair of new speaker cables this am. We started with 50' of outdoor 14g cold weather outdoor extension cord. I believe I voided the 3 year warranty when i cut them in two. She soldered two leads for the pos and left the one for neg. Big giant blue cables.
I'd love for one of the local guys to compare these to your cables for fun. They are long though at close to 25' with cheap banana plugs silver soldered to the ends. The bananas were such crap they were a pain to solder. I was just going to mechanically attach them after tinning, but I couldn't even do that. Thats what I get for buying banana plugs at Home Depot.

Ted,
Anyway to hear some DSD set ups when you make it back from CES? Do you still make it down to Columbus?
Sorry I missed the gathering. Too much snow and I've been offline over the Holiday's.
When is the next one scheduled?

Anyone local want to stop by this weekend? Here is what I have set up right now. Homemade computer running Jriver, Paul Pang USB, Dacmagic, virtue 1 amp (Bill's), Omega Super 3 speakers with new RS5 drivers (50 hours and counting on them), sub and HDD and Turntable.
To do a demo justice I need to borrow a USB DAC that does 24bit, and 96khz or higher. The Dacmagic tops out at 16/44.1 on USB. And it still Blows me away at that too.
The Paul Pang USB is the real deal. Wait till it burns in and I get the power supply for it and battery power for the SSD in it too.
Ray
I'm very close to bbaxters house.
-
I could be available on Sunday or Monday (I have the day off for MLK's birthday). I have a Parasound ZDAC I could bring along. Would be interesting to compare inexpensive DACs.

Sounds good. You may enjoy the Omega's. With a sub of course.

Greetings all! I missed all of this discussion though I follow a few topics. I'm in Delaware County in Central Ohio, who is an older tube type and would enjoy learning more about the latest DAC's and Music Servers as my CDP needs replacing. Of course, beyond comparing notes meeting other's with this hobby would be very cool.
-
I could make it this weekend (1/18 or 1/19), but I have work on Monday. If we're going to be playing with DAC's, I could bring my PSAudio PWD-MkII, easy enough to grab and toss in the car. Please keep me posted on details. Thanks
-
Bob,
Ray and I talked about getting together on Sunday, later afternoon. We have yet to determine the time. I'd love to hear your PS Audio DAC compared to my more humble ZDAC.
-
Word is I will be home by 3pm from Wattsburg, PA. Day XC ski trip. I may be half asleep when you get here, but...
How about 4:30pm to audition my Cheap and Cheerful system and test three DAC's (DacMagic, Zdac and PS Audio) and get just an intro to music servers with a Paul Pang USB card running Jriver and a few Hi-rez albums (one or two dsf files if others DAC's can play them at native resolution).
Feel free to bring a CD, vinyl (my needle is mint-have carbon cleaning brush), thumb drive or HDD (Fat 32 or MS compatible) and beer. I could even hook up my PS3 if you want to play SACD's.
2523 Canterbury Rd. 44118. Feel free to bring house slippers as my cave floor is kind of cold.
Ray
-
That's a little late for me. By the time everyone get's settled in, I would have to leave for the ice rink.
-
On my home from an exhausting ski. Should have no problem being ready st 4:30. Sorry Speedskater.
-
Thanks guys, It was very revealing to hear the difference between my Dacmagic, Jonathan's ZDac and kernelbob's PSAudio MK.2. The Zdac and a Shinyata Python power cord and the PSAdio had a VS Master power cord with Delphi cabling.
The cool part is that my very cheap and cheerful system has enough resolution to detect the differences between all three. Thanks guys, it was a fun night. And I surprised them with a $10 amplifier! That was fun for me.
And for me I am happy you guys enjoyed my C&C system. It will only get better one tweak at a time.

Bob,
Ray and I talked about getting together on Sunday, later afternoon. We have yet to determine the time. I'd love to hear your PS Audio DAC compared to my more humble ZDAC.
I think it is only right that we are allowed our own opinions of product comparisons, but if I may say that I thought (and this after switching back to my system at end of the night) that the ZDAC with Shunyata Python power cord was laid back, mellow even. My DacMagic maybe had a tad bit more bass, but glary on top with the strings and piano. Made me want to turn the volume down a hair. The PSAudio DAC with VS Masterbuilt (plus?) power cord was every bit as awesome as one would expect. From timber on cymbals to the way it handled solo violin and piano as well as the ease with big loud complex orchestral passages. Realistic and detail, detail, detail. Im in love with a DAC (and power cord).
One thing I thought of was we should have hooked up the Python on my computer because my DAC would not accept any other power cords (has an odd SMPS config). Actually maybe better we didn't. My music server is a budget server. Would go against the C&C theme if the power cord was equal to the value of the entire computer.
Even though we did not A/B power cords I am pretty darn sure that they make a difference. Next meeting maybe we ought to try some power cord changes from stock black OEM computer cords all the way to the VS Masterbuilt. Maybe even do a blind test for fun with a curtain so no peaking.

bbaxter you've turned me into a huge Bruckner fan. I feel like I may not stop till I have all the works in all the versions. I just read your liner notes on the Bruckner Symphony 4, Jesus Lopez-Cobos Telarc recording. Im listening to the 8th right now (The DG Guilini-Vienna Orchestra recording), but may fit in the 4th before bedtime.
We need to get together soon so I can delve deeper into more of the Bruckner recordings.

Hi Ray,
I subscribe to an emailed newsletter from http://www.abruckner.com/
It has lots of information on all things Bruckner. Hard to find Bruckner CDs are available from this site. The newsletter also provides info on performances around the world that you can stream.
You also may want to check out The Bruckner Journal at http://www.brucknerjournal.co.uk/
As you're exploring performances, check out the Furtwangler recordings. I'll bring some of my favorites to our next get together. Maybe I should have one at my place next. Maybe in a few weeks when the winter blasts ease up.
Enjoy,
Bob

Bob,
with the new weather front coming in our get together may never happen! But you know I am happy. More time on the XC skis. Thanks for info on Bruckner.
to all: I just sold my Dacmagic. if I go with DSD capable then I may go with the iDSD. It is getting favorable reviews for only $189 and will play all of my files through USB at full resolution. The other option is to buy a small SET amplifier which is what these Omega's mate with really well they say. It is night and day in all respects. I can buy a new Miniwatt N3 for about $230 shipped on Amazon. Or spend another hundred for a Musical Paradise and get two inputs which is actually worth the extra $100 all by itself. A Niles input selector box is $90 by itself.
Of course I'll have to go without a DAC for awhile which will be nuts with the music server only ripping new music.
Ray

Ray, did you do that long XC race or is it still on the schedule?

Still training for the Birkie. It is in February 21st.

With Ray's XC event scheduled for 2/21, how does a Saturday 3/1 get together of the North East Ohio audio group sound at my place? An earlier date is fine also. PM me with your thoughts. Thanks

I am in.

Need help:
I sold my Dacmagic so I could get something that plays DSD as well as 24/192 high res files via USB (from my recent built msuci server). But I got thinking about it and to be honest it is expensive enough buying the occasional HD Tracks recordings. I can only imagine the cost of a new DSD library. My PS3 is not a model that can be used to rip DSD's too. CD Rips sound darn good too as long as you don't listen to a high res right before!
That is one thing.
Next thing is the iDSD is only $189 and the iDac is $299. Ultimately the iDac is supposed to sound better than the iDSD, but of course won't play a DSD file. So there is that.
Now the last thing.
For about $400 new I can buy a SET amp that is supposed to transform my already quite nice Omega loudspeaker system (I am now running two old subs). This means I may have this good sounding system, but cannot play my digital music for awhile. Well I have a possible work around. My Sony N100 (which I bought for like a $1) on One Sale a Day plays high res files (PCM 24/192). I could rig it for a few weeks as my DAC, but not using my server, just a thumb drive stuck in the front USB input (AAC and convert my FLAC to .WAV). PITA! Means I will need to make playlist to a thumb drive. Sounds boring.
So really I suppose it comes down to DAC vs SET AMP then if DAC: iDSD vs iDAC. With a budget of between $200-$400 MAX for one or the either I am torn what to get first. HELP!
EDIT:Just bought a MP 301 MK3 used locally. Yay! Hope to pick it up this week.

I too am a Cleveland based audio nut. Mostly like to listen to music as a way to relax, have fun tracking down new stuff every now and again. There is a group in NEO called ears and beers that gets together every now and again.
I would be down for something.
I am in Ohio City.
-
I have an scott nixon dac that is super portable I could bring along. It is nothing to look at, but it has got me by for a few years.
-
Welcome buckeyefanandy. We had fun the two get togethers.
I sold my DAC as stated now I have this gorgeous used toy from another local AC member. It sounds amazing. So much so that I haven't turned on my subs yet. 4" single drivers producing nice mid bass (finally).
Craziest part, listening to my music server sans DAC through non audiophile 3.5mm output from motherboard! It is just Direct Sound-WASAPI driver. Wait till I get a new DAC!

Hi all,
I'd like to change the date for the get together of the North East Ohio Audio Group from March 1st to Saturday, March 15th. Is that Ok with folks? If you can let me know if the date's OK, I'll send directions for the meet. Thanks
Bob
-
Hey Ray, that's one sweet looking tube amp! I'm looking forward to hearing it.
Hi Buckeyefanandy, sure, bring the Nixon DAC. Easy enough to swap DACs in the system.
Anyone else that wants to bring hardware (and music of course), please do. A Saturday meet will give us lots of time to check stuff out.

Ive got the date down. The guy who sold me this amp is interested in coming too. I cannot wait to hear the VS speakers, cables, etc.
Should I burn some WAV and flac files to disc of what we listened to at my house? Could be a fun comparo. Assuming your transport can read a CD-R.
-
Ray, congrat's on the new toy(I was at a gig last night, thus the brief reply to your text). Bob, I will be out of town on the 15th. Will have to make it another time. Thanks.

Come on over if you have an hour. Well discuss a time. I'm racing Sunday in Allegheny NY, but Saturday I should be home. Want some ideas on drumming too.
-
Hey guys, I'm Eric - I'm the guy who sold Ray his new tube amp. I've seen your past meetings but couldn't make it. I'd very much like to come to the March event. I don't have much in the way of shareable/moveable gear, but I can bring some music, and beer.
-
Johnathan, sorry you can't make it. We could use your great sounding DAC in a second "DACathalon" along with buckeyefanandy's DAC.
My transport should be able to handle CD-R's if anyone wants to burn some up to 24/192. Of course any tunes anyone wants are fine also on CD, DVD, BluRay, etc. Sorry, I still don't have a music server and my turntable needs a phono amp. I feel like an 8-track user.
I'll post a list so folks can make sure I've got everyone.
-
Hi Guys,
I'm in for March 15th! I will bring music & beer!
-
Just picked up one of these:
Got great reviews on 6moons & Enjoy the Music. Haven't hooked it up yet, but I can bring it on the 15th if anyone's interested.
-
Regarding bringing the amp to the next NEOhio audio group meet. Let's see-- linear power supply; class AB (not D) ; 1 to 200k bandwidth; S/N better than 100 dB... I think you get a unanimous yes!
It looks like we'll have several interesting pieces of equipment to check out at our 3/15 get together. Looks like a busy Saturday!

I'll bring your amp on that date. American Birkiebeiner was so awesome and so hard! I finished 690/1900+ in classic 54k out of the very far back 8th wave oof 9 waves. I literally passed over a thousand skiers.

On an unrelated note, I had the pleasure of hearing Don Better's digital "big rig" yesterday. A pair of Vandersteen 7s, top of the line Naim server and DAC, driven by huge ARC monoblocks into a Shindo preamp. Big, fancy cabling galore, too, of course (not sure what it was). It really was fantastic. Huge dynamics, clarity, and fantastic tonal evenness up and down the whole range, including amazing DEEP and clean bottom end (on source material that had it on the recording). Every nuance in the recording was evident, and every recording was a unique experience. Also VERY cool was the Naim proprietary software that loaded onto the iPad detailed information about each recording. Definitely made me wish I had a spare $125,000 sitting around. Went home to my Parasound ZDAC feeling a bit humbled. That said, my system still sounded good, which is a testament how much can be achieved for a fraction of the price of a reference system.

I am sure it was amazing to hear. Did you go shopping there or did he have an open demo?

I was there buying an Audioquest Cinnamon USB cablefrom him. (Not convinced it made any difference, but in fairness I have not really had time to sit and listen critically.)
Not often I get to hear a six-figure system. It really was excellent sounding.
-
When or if I get a DAC again please let me try the USB cable!!

I feel really bad forgetting to invite my AC friends to a great jazz show last night. It was at the tavern company in Cleveland Heights. Next time my friends band has a gig we should all go. They were amazing. They played Davis, Ellington,Thelonius, Wynton and more.
-
A new toy coming my way from a racing friend who just wants it to have a new home. It will be fun to hear it. Not sure when we will hook up though.
If you know something about this amplifier let me know. I will post in the tube section of AC someday too.

Just confirming our planned get together on Saturday 3/15 at my place. I've sent PMs to those recently posting interest in attending. If I've missed anyone who wants to attend, please send me a PM and I'll send you directions. I'm located near Mentor, Ohio
Best,
Robert

Just a reminder that the North East Ohio audio group is going to meet at my place this Saturday, March 15th, around 2pm. If anyone needs directions to my place, let me know and I'll send info. Folks are bringing some interesting equipment including power amps, at least one DAC, and a music server. One thing, I have a full set of Delphi MasterBuilt power cords, interconnects, and speaker cables, but my interconnects are balanced. I do have an older set of Harmonic Technology single ended interconnects, but nothing recent, so feel free to bring any cabling and/or powercords you want.
See you Saturday,
Robert

I'm in. Bringing a DSD DAC and my server of course.

That Fairchild is a gorgeous looking amp. It has a vintage look...is it? Congrats!

yes it is quite old. I hope I get a pair though as it is mono.

Never heard anything about the get together at Bob's place. How did it go?

Sorry for being late with a reply. We had a great time at the 3/15 meeting. Ray brought his music server which I was looking forward to trying in my system. As I expected, it sounded great. We just plugged its USB output into my PSAudio PWD-II and that was it. I'm definitely going to have to get a music server in my system.
Bill brought his new solid state amp, but the afternoon flew by and we didn't get around to hooking it up my VSA speakers. The next time we meet at my place, I'd like to see if anyone has amps that they'd like to bring or audition (in addition to Bill's of course).
The next get together has yet to be determined, so if anyone wants to host, that would be great. Anytime someone wants to meet at my place, it's always available.
Best,
Robert

One of many standouts at the latest get together was how utterly silent his system is of any noise. Just a wall of blackness behind the music. I am contemplating my power options down there. I am barely50' if even from my panel so at some point I'll look into a dedicated line. I hear every light, fan, motor come on through my stereo. And a constant buzz and hiss. As always a covet his DAC.
-
Not only that, but we got to hear Robert's Kronzillas thru his VSA's, all connected by MasterBuilt cables! The cables alone probably are worth more than most of our systems! Very convincing image, soundstage, timbre & dynamics. One of the best systems I've had the pleasure to hear! And Robert was the consummate host, of course! All in all, a great afternoon.
-
Im still alive and well, but havent been in the cave but an hour in the last few weeks. Just wanted to say email or call me if you want to get together. I have also not been in AC in weeks. Bike racing has started and school is nuts with OAA preparation and writing IEP's for all my kids. Already got a 6th in a race in the aide of my team mates.
-
Do any of the NW Ohio members live near Youngstown? I will be playing the "good son" from May 8-23. I fly in on the 7th and out on the 24th. I sure could use a musical diversion for a couple of hours, meet an AC member or two and broaden my equipment experience. :green:
-
Gentlemen
I would like permission to join your group. I am packing up my equipment as we speak and headed for the Dayton area. Yea I know it's not North East Ohio but I would be willing to travel to see and meet you guys. I'm currently looking for a house so this will be a few months in the works. I've come to learn the my wife and I are polar opposites when it comes to what we are looking for in a house. So I've come to the conclusion she gets to pick the house as long as it has a room for my stuff :duh: . Anyway hope I get the opportunity to meet a few of you at you next get together. After reading through this thread I think I might have some stuff that will interest a couple of you. You'll have to excuse me if it takes a little while for me to replay back as I'm very busy with the packing, work and saying bye to friends. But I will reply when I take a break.
Best Regards;
Robert

Hi Robert, Cleveland would be a long drive for just our little hi-fi get-to-gathers.
But not all that far from you is the MidWest AudioFest in Springboro, Ohio on July 12, 2014.
http://midwestaudiofest.com/index.php
-
Ive been playing my stereo for the first time in months. Motivated by learning a couple instruments again. Had to get my Ray Brown on!
What is everyone up to?
Ray
-
Sailboat racing.
The grandsons Spring soccer tournaments and baseball games. Both of which have ended, so we have a quite month before Fall soccer and football.
-
Funny how we go from totally obsessed to completely uninterested depending on what's going on elsewhere in life. I, too, have been mostly away from my system almost all summer, though I did take a photo from my listening chair a couple of months ago. The perspective is weird, but I thinks it's a cool picture nonetheless.
Hope you're all having a good summer. By the way--Bob, is that your PS Audio DAC for sale on Audiogon? I sure wish I had the funds.
-
Nope, not my PSA PWD-II. A friend is trading in his PWD-II for the DirectStream. I'm going to get to hear his before having to decide whether to upgrade mine. There are so many choices, each with its champions.
-
Hi guys,
Well the beautiful room you see above is COMPLETELY TRASHED after last week's disastrous flooding here in Shaker Heights. After the drains backed up, we had four or five inches of standing water in the entire basement, which destroyed the carpeting and subfloor. Fortunately, the electronics were on a rack and did not get wet. The bases of the speakers were somewhat damp, but not too bad; I got them out of the basement as soon as I could and then took the low end drivers out and felt around inside the fiberglass insulation at the bottom of the cabinet. It was mostly dry, as were the terminals underneath, which I unscrewed and let air out. I have yet to hook them up, but I'm assuming (hoping) they work.
The primary damage was to my record collection, which was stored in three levels of plastic square shelving. Unfortunately, the entire bottom row, which included all of my rock and jazz records (I had maybe a couple of hundred), got hit hard. I took all of the albums out and dried them off, but the jackets and sleeves sucked up water like a sponge. I'm going to buy new sleeves. Most of the jackets are still functional, but the majority are cosmetically wrecked. What a bummer. Fortunately, all of my classical LPs (about 300 or so) did not get wet at all.
On a completely different note, I did score this morning at a neighborhood estate sale. I picked up a Magnum Dynalab FM tuner for $5 and a Thorens TD 320 turntable for $100. It has a Grado cartridge with no stylus on it, so I'm not even sure if it works (although it turns on and the platter spins, so that's a good sign). My plan was to put my Ortofon OM Super 20 cartridge on it; I'm assuming this would be an upgrade from my NAD 533, but I guess we will see). I have no tools, gauges, protractors, etc. to set this thing up (for that matter, I have no knowledge of how to do it either), so I could use some help. Are any of you NE Ohio guys out there turntable gurus? I'll buy the beer (AFTER cartridge is adjusted) ;-)
-
John I am not promising a perfect alignment but I've done my cartridges many times. I think I'm getting pretty good at it. I'm so sorry about your basement and records.
-
Ray, I sent a PM your way.
-Jon
-
So sorry to hear about your flooding, Jonathan! Such a shame! Hope you'll be able to salvage most of it.
-
Hey all,
I need someone to come and help me troubleshoot. I have some serious hiss and noise in my system. Prefer if it is someone who can bring known good power cable, RCA and potentially a USB for the DAC to PC.
Thanks all,
Ray
-
Hi Ray, I'd be glad to stop over with powercords, ICs, and the USB cable we used when you brought your music server to my place. The single ended IC is not my current stuff, but works fine. I can bring the Tortuga passive controller which has both balanced and single ended inputs & outputs (transformer coupled on the SE inputs an outputs-- dead quiet). I could also bring the Spectrons so we could try them in place of your power amp. In the meantime, since you mention hiss, have you been able to try swapping tubes? PM me and we can set up a time.
Best, Robert
-
Let me know what happening. We had our speedskating race in Cleveland Heights on Saturday. So now I'm catching up with forums. I've been troubleshooting for 50 years now.
When all else fails read the instructions. Troubleshooting starts at about page 100.

Thanks all. Bringing that much stuff over is overkill. I do need cords as I think that is part of a global problem of noise, but I think I have it narrowed down to either dirty power or in the amp. I will sub in my digital, battery operated amp (the one I hid at the get together because it costs less than $20) next. if it goes away then it is tim e to buy tubes. Which I am fine with. I wanted to do some tube rolling anyways.
I don't know a time right now, except I start winter break next Saturday so my time will open up.
Hope all are well.

I am sorry to hear this.... I hope you have recovered. I live in Cuyahoga Falls and we had some serious flooding from over taxed sewers. A real mess! I wish I could help you with your turntable woes, but I do not own one. BTW Don Better audio is in Shaker Heights and he sells top notch audio.
-
But cords and cables shouldn't be part of the problem or the solution. While there are defective cords & cables and there are some very poor designs from the boutique shops, the major bulk cable manufactures (like Belden) have been making good cables for decades.
-
Well over break I did a lot of things, but one was not trouble shoot my hiss and noise problems. I did finally download some free DSF files and they are quite good. They were live recordings of mostly single instruments at trade shows, etc. Odd.
I don't want to drop the $40 on a full download till I do more research on a stellar recording and stellar performance too! If anyone has a recommendation let me know then we can play it on a get together.
-
Greetings All:
I jumped in about a year and a half ago to see if any get to gethers were going on in NE OH but, I didn't stay logged in the actually get together. So here it goes again...West side person looking to hang out with other stereo minded people and discuss projects and listen to music. Bi amping and active crossovers are on my wish list. Digital lossless interest.
Tom
-
Tom, I guess that you and me are the only West siders. (Lakewood)
-
Well until I can replace the tubes on my Musical Paradise MP301 I am back to my $8 amp with batteries. And guess what? It sounds freaking good. Love my sleeper set-up.
I had no idea what a horrid sounds a tube amp can make when a tube goes. Well I assume it is a tube. A loud cracking and popping sound like record static, but louder and independent of volume.

Wow, it has been awhile since I was here. Hello everyone. My basement keeps trying to be a swimming pool as we Clevelanders know it is constantly raining. I get it cleaned and it rains again. Ugh!
Anyways a friend is moving and has some goodies. AR1 TT, Hafler amp and pre-amp, Thiel speakers. PM or email or call me if your interested in any of it.
He also has a rock vinyl collection and Telarc and other classical selection on CD's.
Ray

So Ray what have you been up to?
For me, the ice speedskating season is long past and it's often too wet to inline in the park.
But we have been able to sneak some sailboat racing in between the storms.

I just signed up too.
Maybe Saturday afternoon after speedskating.
-
So I went down into the Flats on my way home from speedskating practice. But being a beautiful October afternoon there were people everywhere and the only parking was $10, so I never made it to the show. Last Saturday I drove by just to reconnoiter, it was cold and raining with lots of available parking.
Did anybody make it to the show?
Any thoughts as to just why they chose that location?
-
I took my son (10 year) along for a listen.
There were 3 room:
CD room with expensive DanAgostino amps, dCS and Wilson speakers (some $52K) -most expensive room
Streaming room with Wilson Sabrina, Dan, dCS -least expensive room
Vinyl room with Wilson (some $25k) and Audio Research amps
My son liked the Vinyl room, and so did I, despite not being the vinyl guy. It sounded musical.
And I don't think it was the vinyl that influenced my decision. It was the musical choice and the AR gear (again, I am not a tube guy).
I had not listened to the Wilsons before and I was impressed by the loudspeakers. I was told that these speakers were not as warm as my own Quad 21L or the Sonus Faber. Wish I had the dough.
Forgot to mention - we parked in the $4 all day parking just 1 block away :-)

I went on Friday, first time I was able to listen to Wilson speakers, enjoyed the Sasha's in the Vinyl room the best.
I too liked the Agostino amps, very well designed and very sharp looking gear, but I have to rule out getting their new
$50,000 streamer...

Long time no chat everyone. I hope everyone is doing well. I have sorted out some problems in my system but nothing really new has been added. But I am testing the Roon software which I am really liking. If anyone would like to come over and hear the system with this software just let me know.
-
Hi Ray. Interested to hear more about the Roon software. Big changes on this end: I bought a pair of Maggie 1.7s. They sound great. You're certainly welcome to come by any time for a listen. (The same goes for you other guys.) I'm now trying to sell my Thiel 3.6s locally, so if anyone is interested or knows someone who might be, let me know.

Hi from Bath, OH
good to see some local audio folks
-
Hey Jon, would love to come over to hear your new Maggies! Maybe a group get-together if you're up for it?
-
Hi, Bill. Sorry that I seem not to have received notification of your prior message. Yes, by all means, you should come by and have a listen. With the changes I've made lately, including selling off my preamp and buying a used PS Audio PerfectWave DAC II, the system has never sounded better (actually it's easily the best sounding system I have owned). I am going to have the place to myself for a week around Memorial Day--perhaps we can get together then, along with anyone else from the group who may want to come. Send me a private message or better yet, email me at buzz1257@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Me too, Ray. It's pretty great, especially tied in to Tidal, so I can pretty much listen to anything any time. Not quite ready to take the lifetime plunge, but I did sign up for a year. The only real problem for me is that neither my iPhone nor iPad are compatible because they're old. That means I have to use my laptop as a remote control device. Not exactly ideal. Oh well, it's almost time for a new phone anyway.
-
Just reaching out one last time about a possible get-together at my place in Shaker Heights some time this weekend. I'm pretty flexible, time wise, except for during potential Cavaliers game times on Friday and (hopefully not) Sunday. Feel free to text at 440- nine, three, five- 4124 with your interest/availability. Just an FYI that if you want to bring over a line-level source of any kind, I no longer have a preamp, so you'd have to bring one. I do have a homemade input selector with a volume pot, but that's it. Thanks, guys.

But this will be the first weekend of real summer weather. It's time to be outdoors, doing things.
-
Darn it, I missed all this, Jonathan! Wanna give it another try? Maybe a rainy Saturday?

No worries, Bill--everyone else missed it, too. :? I'm happy to have you over any time (rain or shine). Just send me a PM with a bit of notice.

Thursday evening this question came up at the Cleveland Heights skating rink:
Is anyone in N.E. Ohio up to anything?

My system has completely changed over the past year: I kept the Pararsound A21 amp, but replaced my Thiel 3.6s with a pair of Maggie 1.7s, added a REL Stadium III sub, sold the Parasound ZDAC and bought a PS Audio PerfectWave DAC II, and replaced my ARC preamp with a Tortuga LDR attenuator (now running off a 12 volt battery). I think it sounds pretty darned good, but no one has been over to hear it. Maybe after the first of the year...

I'd love to hear your new system, Jon! I got a pair of Maggie MMGs for my small listening room & love them!
Let's figure out a time to get the group together.
-
Congrats on the new Maggies, Bill. They're a lot of fun, aren't they? Looking forward to hearing yours and having you over to hear mine.
-
Congratulations on the Maggies! I'm on my second pair and am sold on their sound. My wife does not like the size and therefore has banished them to my small office as a near field speaker. Does anyone know when the next Happy Dog event for the vinyl enthusiasts will be held?
-
Just a quick shout-out to the NE Ohio guys. I have a Headroom "The Little" headphone amp and a pair of Kimber Silver Streak interconnects with WBT RCAs. Both have some years on them, but both work perfectly. I am highly motivated to move them in order to put some cash together for another purchase. Please let me know if you might be interested in either, and we can discuss prices. Thanks!

Anyone in the NE Ohio group have Monday off for President's Day? Might be a good day for a listening session at my house.
-
I have every Monday off. But the grandsons also have this coming Monday off. And so far there's an indoor soccer tournament and a practice speedskating race on the list.
-
Unfortunately, I have to work Monday. How's that Tortuga sounding? Did the battery power supply improve yours as much as I said it did mine? When I used the Perfectwave Mk-II DAC, it always had the best bass at the max volume. I'll bet that combo has great dynamics and grain-free smoothness.
I also want to have the NE Ohio folks over to my place soon. I've installed a loom of Masterbuilt Ultra cabling, a Mutec MC3+USB digital reclocker, and have a Lampizator GoldenGate due soon.

But for the hiccup I had with the balance control, the Tortuga is sounding great; it does seem fuller sounding with the preamp in the rig than straight into the amp. Not sure I'm hearing a huge difference with or without the battery. I very much want to hear your system, so keep me in the loop.

Hey guys. Not sure if anyone might be in the market for new speakers, but there's a pair of "minty" Maggie 1.7s listed for sale on Ebay for a mere $950. That's a really great price for a really good speaker. They're located in Akron; the seller wants a local pickup. Here's the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/152570690096
If anyone wants to come and listen to mine to hear what I'm talking about, you're welcome. I cannot imagine you finding a better sounding speaker for that price (or considerably more). Hope you guys are all doing well.

Hi guys. I am open to having a small get together some time this weekend. Bill already said he is in for Saturday or Sunday. I am good with either day. Let me know who might be interested.
Best,
Jon
-
Jonathan, count me in. It's been too long since we'd had a get-together.

Great! Do you have preference for which day (Saturday or Sunday) or what time?

Where? (approximately) don't put exact address on the web.
-
I'm on the east side, not far from where Bill and Ray live. You can PM me for more specifics if you want.
-
Only one normal weekend left this calendar year.
I skate in Cleveland Heights on Saturdays till about 2PM.
Sundays in Painsville till noon.
-
Hey guys. It’s looking like 1:30 or 2:00 on Saturday will work for some of us, so let’s do that. I will have some snacks, but feel free to bring whatever you want
PM me for the address and phone number.

I'll bring beer!

I'll bring beer!
Sounds good--thanks!

I'll be at the ice rink just to the north till about 2PM, but I may have to drive a grandson back to N. Olmsted.

Hello, guys.
Bill and Robert have both said they're in. I know Ray cannot make it on Saturday afternoon, and it sounds like it could be a challenge for Kevin, too. I am pretty flexible this weekend, so if it works better to meet on Sunday, we certainly can do that.
Jon
-
I'll be in the neighborhood, the unknown factor is whether I have to take my grandson home after practice. That's something I may not know till I'm at the rink.
By the way:
Short Track Speedskating on regular TV and NBCSN this weekend

Jonathan, I sent you a PM for info.
-
Okay, we are "officially" on for tomorrow (Saturday) at my place, some time between 1:30 and 2pm. Feel free to bring whatever you want in terms of gear and/or music. I will provide some chips and other snacks and water; Bill is bringing some beer. Looking forward to it...

Moving soon, so I am selling my Adona rack components for cheap. The platforms are heavy so local (44145) pickup is preferred, but I have shipping boxes if needed. FYI.

This NEO thread appears to be hibernating. I'm in Hudson OH and would be interested to join a local audiophile crew.
-
Being in Columbus, I could possibly be in NEO  if there was ever an interest in a fair weather get-together there.
