Having heard amps since the '60's- Fisher, Harmon-Kardon Citation, Marantz, Sherwood, Cary, Quicksilver, VAC, BAT- I can say that the Music Reference RM-9 is the most neutral and musical amp ever made. I notice that you specify one with variable gain/feedback. I think all of them had that feature, but it is a terrific feature. I use the "LO" setting for maximum feedback and damping, as I have my amp driving electrostatic speakers; Roger mentions that he in fact designed the RM-9 with electrostatics in mind, so this is the setting that best accomodates difficult loads. Be sure also to experiment with the speaker impedance taps; for my Martin-Logan Sequels, I find the 2-ohm tap combined with the LO gain setting yields extraordinarily detail and imaging, with airy highs and tight, articulate and deeply extended bass. Most importantly, using these settings clarifies the music and increases my involvement with it. In my not so humble opinion, no electronic component equals the RM-9.
