Waveguides Rule!

Guys,

Check out the link: http://www.nutshellhifi.com/library/Holland&Newell_1995_Sound_of_Horns.pdf

Ha! - And I've been building them that way sine 1991. :green:

The only difference is that they evaluated all "horns" (yuk) using compression drivers (worse "yuk").  Due to the high compression ratios encountered at high frequencies when using compression drivers, distortion from about 5KHz on up is more than I prefer to hear.  Therefore we use soft-dome tweeters with the end result being all of the benefits outlined in the paper regarding short "horns" ("waveguides"... dog-gone it!) in the midrange... and none of the high frequency distortion/listening fatigue.

Oh yeah... and our deepest waveguide is only 76mm - far shorter (1/4 the length) than the 340mm recommended in the above paper.

Just thought you might like to know. aa

Yeah, Bob, and your guide is an integral part of your cabinets that opens out on a gradual curve.  Always admired that and I imagine that's not an easy thing to do.  Haven't noticed any distortion/fatique IME, just the opposite.

The 'honkiness' is supposedly due to high order modes, I thought, caused by reflections from the cabinet and horn/waveguide.

My waveguide speakers use a compression tweeter and sound quite good...and since the B&C DE250 costs more than many high quality tweeters, the designer must have had his own reasons for going with it.  Sounds quite excellent to my ears, though.

I did ask the last time whether you have any waveguide for sale, your reply was no, have you change your mind this time? I am still interested.
