sts9fan, EricusRex, and I just listened to these for a short time today at my place before they move to their next home.
The associated equipment: squeezebox duet, benchmark dac1 usb, jeff rowland consonance preamp, audio by van alstine fet valve ultra 550 with NOS telefunken 12at7 or a music reference rm10 mk ii. An ACI titan XL with a DSPeaker 8033 filled in the bottom.
We listened to a selection of music from various rock, pop, and indie artists from my collection with recording qualities from pretty good to okay. Unfortunately, we didn't pull out any completely acoustic reference-quality recordings. Should have done that.
I must say, these are impressive speakers. In particular, I was stuck by how extended, detailed, and natural the highs are. The metallic nature of cymbals came through without any brightness or glare whatsoever. That's a really important quality to me. The mid-range melds in seamlessly, and as far as I could tell there is certainly nothing untoward about it. Very nice, in fact.
Bass. Darn it, I never turned off the sub so I can't be entirely sure, but I didn't detect any faults here either. Although, my wife commented that they could use a bit more bass.
Generally, we all agreed that these N1X's are excellent. They exceed what I would expect for the price by far; the consenus is that these babies are a fantastic value.
