Just picked up AK&US Paper Airplane on vinyl yesterday

WOW, what a disappointment. It's dull and compressed, no dynamics. The MP3 download (included) sounds better than the vinyl.

Don't waste your money on this one  :duh:

bummer  :(  what was the label this was pressed on?

Bill,  Sweet haul  :P   are those price tags right?  did you get PFM for $2.99?  :green:

Jim

No Jim that was an old (original) sticker The price was $4.99

The most expensive LP was the Zombies at $13.99 (import Decca)

For those interested the total for the LPs was $50

Hi Jlappy,

I checked the label and it said it was Rounder Records and this printing was manufactured and distributed by Concord.

I talked to one of the other guys here (Blackmore) and he mentioned the CD was pretty dull too.

Just doing some quick math, the running time on the CD is about 45 minutes. This is a single album. That means the running time per side is right at 22 minutes. WAY too long to provide an open and dynamic release. The old 'standard' used to be right at 17 minutes per side.

Guess I should have put two and two together and done some math before I plopped down my cash  :duh:

$4.99 for the PFM is a great price, you'll need to let us know what you think of this prog italia lp :)

Hey Scott F.,

Again a big bummer and I'm a big AK&US fan.  It must have been a combination of recording engineering and the pressing.  I would expect more out of Rounder that's a decent label   :dunno:

Just doing some quick math, the running time on the CD is about 45 minutes. This is a single album. That means the running time per side is right at 22 minutes. WAY too long to provide an open and dynamic release. The old 'standard' used to be right at 17 minutes per side.

Your mathematical logic makes sense here, yet as a big prog rock fan I thought that  as you stated "The old 'standard' used to be right at 17 minutes per side" was maybe a bit short.  Many prog rock lps push way beyond that.

Close To The Edge, Yes is close at Total Time: 37:56
Thick As A Brick,  Jethro Tull is at Total Time: 43:44
In The Court Of The Crimson King, King Crimson is at Total Time: 43:45
Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd is at Total Time: 44:25
Foxtrot, Genesis is at Total Time: 50:33
Selling England By The Pound, Genesis is at Total Time: 53:22

of course when these lps came out cds were not around.

:dunno: I don't know anything about the physics of the analogue music transfer from the vinyl/groves to the needle . . . your compressed point makes sense, limiting the open and dynamic release, yet I'm wondering if the optimum is beyond 17 min a side

cheers,  Jim

Pearson also slammed the Cat Stevens and everyone else has praised it. I have a few Lee Hulko US pressings and a MoFi 1970's. I can wait for an Island pressing from England...maybe...Mikey liked the new one...

Paul

I havent heard the new DSOTM, but i just received a copy of the new "Tea" and i have to agree w/ virtually everything Pearson said, but i havent had a chance of comparing it to my used copy. I'm going to give it a closer listen and compare the two.

Which one you need Paul ?? Let me know.

None, thanks. Set up a new Expedit from Ikea so I'm in the process of organizing things. I've got records upon records to go through!

I'm with etcarroll and rolllin' the dice with ebay.  1 Westminster, 2 Columbia 6eye, 4 Mercury Living Presence, one sealed DGG, 2 RCA Living Presence... all supposedly NM or better for under $60 shipped.
The highlights are Bruno Walter Beethovan's Pastorale on Columbia 6 eye, Dorati  doing Stravinski's Firebird with Minneapolis, Kubelik doing Tchaikovsky's 6th, and Fennel doing British Bands- all on Mercury Living Presence and all under $7.
Roll dem bones! :D

So far the 1st 3 Sinatras I've listened to have been as advertised.

And 3 weeks ago I got 2 180g Blue Note reissues from a person on ebay, and they were immaculate.

Still bummed about the Kentons being such crap.

Latest DISCOGS order landed this morning
This is the best yet  :thumb:
All in as good or in most cases, better condition than advertised - Discs generally NM, covers vary from VG+ to NM

This order has been strongly influenced by you guys  8)
The Moody's very much on the back of Laura's recent comments and one missing as was.
The Camel, following recent tic-tac led by Jim and Bill.
Added Time Honoured Ghosts to my meagre BJH collection following a few posts a couple of months back.

Thanks all  :thumb:

In fact all are ones I've been wanting to add and great to get from one vendor in a single shot.

Yep! Another excellent DISCOGS experience.

Mitsu - Extending the Budgie collection is next on the radar

Since you have jumped on the Camel wagon, might I suggest, Moonmadness, Rain Dances, Breathless, I can see your house from here, Snow Goose, Mirage, The Single Factor and Pressure Point.

I have several autographed by Andy and they certainly are a treasure.
