Nap.

I would recommend this one to Laundrew since it includes "Gothic Dances", "Dessicated embryos", "True Flabby Preludes", "Three Pieces in the Shape of a Pear" and other equally intriguing titles... then he will have to answer the question "was Erik a goth or a punk".... he had 4 pianos of which 2 were back to back and the other two stacked upside down over the others....

The 9th played by a chamber orchestra:

A thinner but clearer sound than the muffled megaproductions.

God composed Opus 125 using Beethoven as secondary means.  I consider the 9th to be the greatest creation to ever come from the mind of a single human being.  I'm very intrigued that there is an arrangement of it for chamber orchestra.  How is the chorus configured?  "Muffled megaproductions"?  Allow me to recommend the 1952 recording by the NBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the respective direction of Arturo Toscanini and Robert Shaw :thumb:.

there's a link to a long excerpt at the page bottom.

'megaproductions" - those who unsuccessfully try to add (too much) scale and weight. In the end they sound like a pair of tired Klipschorns assisted by a flabby cheap subwoofer.

Precisely my point in the recommendation of the Toscanini.  There are others, Furtwangler comes to mind as well.  Thanks for the link as I am interested in this chamber orchestral arrangement.  Dittos on the Klipschorns.  I auditioned those when I bought my Infinity 9 Kappas 20 years ago and had to go to the ear nose and throat specialist to have the shards of glass removed.

Bill, please note that I listed it in the "Listening to" not the "Recommended" thread... While the performance is interesting and pleasant, the sound recording is a little bit glassy (too much 3-6kHz?) and not with the greatest instrument separation. I have the whole series and they share this signature. It was supposed to sound superb (SACD, eh?) but it didn't. Not really.

Just realizing that this Bolero was recorded before I was even born. Isn't it wonderful that we can transfer these special moments along generations.
