Here we go!!
Kansas City looks better than the Pats, so far.
The Saints don't play until tomorrow night, so we'll see how bad their Defense is at that time. Speaking of the Saints, they seem to have the most difficult schedule in the League to start the first four games. Certainly the most difficult in their Division. Also, this may be Drew Brees' last season as a Saint; we'll see.
Who ya' got?
-
Steelers apparently looked like crap in their victory. On paper the Steelers have the most talent on offense.
It's Super Bowl or bust in a Pittsburgh as Big Ben is nearing retirement.
-
And despite horrible offensive line play, the Seahawks lost due to poor officiating!
Bad calls and none PI calls ...
-
As a Seahawk fan I can say that the team needed no help from the refs in losing, a high school team could have beat them today.
-
Glad I skipped the Giants game.
-
The Iggles looked good yesterday lumping up the Redskins...unfortunately CB Darby dislocated ankle and could miss the season if surgery is needed. The Iggles are soft in the secondary and this will hurt...hope he heals up in time for the Playoffs :eyebrows:
-
Nobody's talking about the Broncos --- and for good reason. I expect them to lose 5 out of their 6 division games and finish 4 - 12. The defense won't be close to the last couple of years and the offense will be mostly field goals with an occasional happy accident touchdown. Tonight against the Bolts in Denver is their best shot at winning a game against a division rival. I doubt if they can pull it off.
-
Did anyone see the Lions/Cardinals game? The first half the Lions looked like a parody of a football team. The Lions defense saved the day, and finally the highest paid player in the NFL (Stafford) woke up. He ended up with 4 TD passes! Arizona managed a TD at the end of the game. Arizona looked shell-shocked.
-
Already miss ESPN2 coverage of the CFL.
Play is so much slower, so many more commercials, so much quibbling over calls, so much showboating by grossly overpaid jocks, so much chatting about everything but the game (even the announcers are bored with the games).
I live on DVR, and most games (not just the NFL) go more than the allowed +30 minute option.
-
lol...I usually start watching the game 1.5 hours in, to miss the commercials. The Lions games are already too painful to watch in real time. Commercials would add "cruel and unusual" to the torture of the average Lions fan!
-

Yeah, Darby was the glue that was going to hold the secondary together. Putting him one on one against the #2 receiver let us double the #1. Did you notice how the defense was way more porous after he left the field? Some lucky plays, questionable ref calls, and the ineptitude of the Redskins made the victory seem bigger than it was. On the plus side Carson looked fabulous. A little rusty as was to be expected with almost no pre season time, but he really picked it up with some unbelievable escapes and dead on throws.

For my other team, didn't get to see the game, local tv had the AFC game blacked out and I won't pay for the NFL package. Reports from my Pgh peeps agree with your assessment. Bell was ineffectual, Brown wasn't open that much, Ben was rusty, defense lackluster. Lucky they were playing the Brownies.
-
Bears fan here stuck watching from Canada. One point to note is that NFL Sunday Ticket is no longer available through the cable company here so I had to sign up for DAZN streaming. The video quality is marginal, I had several streaming stops, a few audio drops...not really a first class replacement to Sunday Ticket. What the hell was the NFL thinking?
-
Glad I skipped the Giants game.
LOL, I think the G-Men thought it was just a 'game' !
-
49ers still struggling
I was expecting more
-
So now with 1/8 of the season completed, there has only been one good game.

Dallas?

A pronouncement such as this rather demands a definition of "good game". Can you take it beyond personal preference somehow? I really likes the Dallas/Denver game but I bet that isn't the one you thought was good.
-
Anyone catch that Monday night game???
-
A good game is one where both teams play with skill for the entire game. So an error filled close game is not a good game, nor is a game where one team easily wins the first half and the other team wins the second half.
-
No kidding about the show oating. One yard gain by the losing team and a player brags. Wtf. If i was coach its old school ,,,,none of it.
-
Anyone catch that Monday night game???
Yes. Was pleasantly surprised that the Lions played as well as they did. The officiating was pretty poor, but the Lions did outplay the Giants.
The next game against the Falcons will be a real test.

Have to disagree on your last point. The most recent Super Bowl went entirely to the Falcons in the first half but turned into a Patriot show in the second half. I felt it was a great game.
-
Looking at it that way, the Chiefs / Patriots game was even better. (as everyone wrote the Chiefs of in the first few minutes)
-
NFL offenses are on a historically low pace. Touchdowns and points are both down from the same point in 2016, and the issue could end up going far beyond just one year.
http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/09/19/nfl-scoring-touchdown-problem/
NFL's ratings woes continued in Week 2, and Wall Street is taking notice, given there are fewer excuses for falling viewership than there were a year ago when Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were distracting TV-watching Americans.

Yes. Was pleasantly surprised that the Lions played as well as they did. The officiating was pretty poor, but the Lions did outplay the Giants.
The next game against the Falcons will be a real test.
The officiating was puzzling to me. They let go pass interference calls on both teams, let NY get away with hits on Stafford (the league's highest paid player) that were illegal, and let an obvious block from behind go by NY that led to a major defensive player getting a head injury. In the past, they were overprotective of the QB, so those non-calls really surprised me.
The Lions haven't played all that well yet and now two of their defensive starters are hurt. Their offense, which should be really good, is really not playing to their level of talent IMO. Stafford seems more in charge this season and the team seems to have good chemistry for once. It could come down to injuries on whether this team goes anywhere.
The Giants didn't play well. To me, as someone who only watches them occasionally, Eli Manning never seems in charge of his team's offense (the same could be said of Stafford in past seasons). They dropped a lot of balls they should have had. I don't see chemistry on this Giants team. Defensively, Jenkins didn't play, but it wasn't so much the corners I would nitpick on NY. The Lions aren't a really good run blocking team and they opened up a few holes I was surprised by. The defense didn't seem to play particularly well, didn't generate a tremendous amount of pass rush (except off of backup LT Robinson who played like garbage), and some linebackers missed assignments (from what I could tell). They could start playing better, but I don't think this is a playoff caliber team from what I see right now.
The Giants also could have been much closer by catching just two of those dropped balls which were right there for them. It would have been close due to a lack of proper officiating, though. This game, at home, shouldn't have been that much of a challenge for NY if they were a good team.

Good game at Levi Stadium tonight :thumb:

Good game at Levi Stadium tonight
Agree! I rarely watch more than 2 - 3 quarters of any game as most are boring. But even though I don't care about either team and almost turned it off immediately when I saw those horribly ugly uniforms (both teams) I am glad I stayed with it to the end. Very exciting. And to see an onsides kick actually work to perfection was amazing as well. A terrificly entertaining game. :thumb:
Oh, and thus far from what I've seen of my dear old Lions, they are going nowhere this year. Another disappointing season in store for one of the most talented QBs in the NFL. Good teams will trounce them this year. Sad.
-
Giants might have the worst O-line in football .......pathetic !
-
The Thursday nite game definitely was exciting!
But it was a mix of the good, the bad and the ugly.
-
Big Divisional Win for the 0-2 Saints over the 2-0 Panthers today.

Thanks to DA BEARS! for beating Pittsburgh, while my Ravens got their asses handed to them.
-
All the sports pundits wrote off my Lions...they almost pulled off beating the Atlanta Falcons!
-
All the sports pundits wrote off my Lions...they almost pulled off beating the Atlanta Falcons!
I feel like the competition committee is going to look at that game - I get the run-off in general, but that was a worst case scenario for that rule & a bad way for the game to end.
-
The Giants left tackle (Flowers) might just be the worst left tackle in the game today. He's no more an NFL calibre player than I am. Perhaps if they could get him on 'Dancing with the Stars' he could improve his footwork ..........pathetic !
-
so.........how did those Bills manage to beat the Broncos who the week before took apart the Cowgirls ?
-
Speaking of games, what happened to the Raiders last night?
Their offense looked pathetic.
Randy
Nah, the Skins were just awesome. :green:

Gentlemen, please, let's leave the politics and the relative merits of kneeling, sitting, standing or whatever during the playing of our national anthem during sporting events to some other venue.
In an attempt to unite our polarized nation and to bring this thread back onto track I think that one thing we can all agree on is that my Giants REALLY suck.
I'm glad I got an antenna as I'd hate to have to pay to watch them go 3 and out all the time.

Agreed.
So, how about going back and deleting the offending posts and issue them a warning via PM? Leaving them up just invites further responses from those who can't help themselves.

Giants always have a tough time with the Eagles. After the Coughlin era, I feel like I can never count the Giants out, but that o-line and maybe that coaching staff are looking pretty bad so far.
I thought the Eagles had the division all along, but WAS has been trending in the right direction for a few years and they looked really tough this last game.

So I was kind of bummed they broadcast the giants game instead of the lions/falcons here in LA, stupid CBS.
Was surprised the Giants actually made it close, took an LONG field goal to beat them. Take some solace in they played much better than the first two games.
EDIT: at least they scored some touchdowns

Saw some infographic before the game that said something along the lines of:
Nelson Agholor TDs - 1
NY Giants TDs - 0

The other early game I was watching Sun was the pats texans.
Pats won, but barely.
Texans have themselves a QB finally. Maybe a little early, but Watson looked good. A lot like the other young texas QB lol

Warning: no political posts or I'll have Jerry Jones AND Lawrence Taylor come live with you.
They blew up your stereo, you say, and then ate all your food? Imagine that.
I had to laugh today as a guy at work (a die hard Giants fan) said there's only one New York team and that's the Bills.
I only caught the tail end of it but the Packers/Bengals game looked really good. Maybe I just caught the exciting part of it.
Tony Romo certainly seemed a little wound up!

Well, with those two there'd be no shortage of excellent scotch, chemical entertainment, and professional companionship. Not a fan of the white stuff, but a nice glass of scotch and a pretty girl is something I could live with.. eh, gotta go, here comes the wife.

I stand corrected! :green:

I stand corrected! :green:
better than 'sitting molested' !

And all this time I thought that smell was coming from the Camden Mud Flats but no, it's really the Giants after all.
Maybe they're just trying to lull the rest of the league into a false sense of security and then it's Super Bowl Trophy Time, oh yeah.

really...... since when does he play defense. Bottom line ____________ right now the Pats defense SUCKS !

no big deal, you can buy them from the 'Pawn Stars' !
on a serious note I suspect the Vegas odds still have them there at seasons end.

G-men .....0-4, who du thought ? man they stink............. speaking of 'who du thought'.....the Bills are 3-1 ??

don't forget the Lions...3 and 1!!! 12 and 4 I say!!! 12 AND 4!!!

Bills doing in Broncos last week and the Falcons yesterday. Whoda thought. Don't get too excited though, see this before.

Rams are 3-1 and leading the NFC West. Talk about surprises lol
Of course they started strong last year, and ended really badly.

I am relatively new to football and all its intricacies. But I have been hearing Tony Romo's commentary in the last couple of games, and I honestly think he is a class apart. The way he explains each play, and what is going on in the minds of the teams - one gets to learn a lot of stuff just listening to him. And he is quite good at predicting plays!
Do any of you agree? Or is this just the novice in me misinterpreting things?
-
I fully agree. The only wish I would have for him is to learn to calm down a bit and let things breath. He seems to be trying very hard to impress.
His ability to calls plays and audibles is kind of scary. It makes me wonder if any of the other ex quarterbacks are capable of the same and just choose not to comment.
-
Haven't heard romo yet.
What game was he on Sunday?
-
Romo was on the Raiders Broncos game. I found him to be very irritating but you decide for yourself.

-
No argument about Romo.
He reminds me of why I used to listen to music while I watched the game.

Interesting to see people are so polarized about Romo. Why does he irritate you so much? Is it only because he is a bit more "hyper" than others?
To his credit, he does not talk about irrelevant stuff that is not relevant to the game at hand, nor does he talk like an airhead. Yes, admittedly, he gets too worked up, but if you just focus on what he is saying, it is usually to the point, and often (or sometimes) quite insightful and also often spookily mind reading the next play. Anyway, like i said, I am still learning the game, so I can understand that others who have been watching the game for a long time would have preferences on how the game is commentated upon.
-
A little too wound up for my tastes but to each their own.
-
I love Tony Romo's enthusiasm and would be honored to have him there with me watching the game and providing his remarkable insights. Having him in the broadcast booth is the next best thing. You guys are just so used to the canned and polished sportscaster lingo that getting it provided colloquially and with unrehearsed energy seems unnatural. Tony is a huge upgrade from Phil Simms.
-
I agree that Romo is rather insightful and he's a work in progress, not quite up to Steve Taskers level yet but he'll get there.
-

My younger son taught a HS class for Steve Tasker's son. I met Steve last year at this school. Real nice guy. Hope he gets into the HOF as a special teams player. He was spectacular when the Bills were just about unbeatable in the 90's.

Steve Tasker was IMO, the 'Pete Rose' of football. Remember this, if it were not for Andre Reed he would have been the starting slot receiver. He was the 3rd QB, behind Reich and also played a few downs in the defensive backfield but his special teams play was at level never seen before. He remains on the list of the ten best players eligible but not (yet) in the HOF
Yes......I'm a huge Tasker fan !
-
oh boy, oh no ugh! ... doesn't work for me. That plus the announcing is about the players on the field not the "I" in the booth. YMMV.
-
Yeah, love Romo in the booth. Great insights into the play, scary good at predicting plays. The first game I heard him on I was switching between games and didn't realize it was him for awhile. I was thinking who is the color guy, he's really good. Surprised to see it was Romo, maybe I would have been prejudiced against him if I knew it was him from the get go. (Cowgirl hater here)

The Dallas/Green Bay game was just great!
Not so much for the Dallas fans but not one to sleep through like I usually end up doing.
Fell asleep during the Beagles game but they look surprisingly good this year.
-
Shit day for the Steelers!!
-
Worse for the Giants with Beckham out with a fractured ankle.
-
Broncos catch a big break when an already failing Giants team loses it's 4 best wide receivers in one game. It happens to be the game before the Giants visit the Broncos. Unless Seimian gives the game away to the G-men defense, this looks like an 0-6 start for N.Y. with visit from the Seahawks making 0-7 seem very likely.
Next spring the N.Y. Giants will be getting their highest draft pick since they chose Eli.
Meanwhile the godforsaken Jets are the biggest surprise in the league, with the possible exceptions of the Buffalo Bills and the L.A. Rams who the Giants host in week 8. In week 9 the G-men visit San Fran for their best shot at a win this year.
Now that we've had our early season surprises, does anyone here care to guess who will play in the Super Bowl this year? K.C. & Carolina?
Yikes!! At the start of the season, the Giants were a 12-1 pick to win the Super Bowl. As of this morning they are given 300-1 odds against winning the big one --- same as the N.Y. Jets. The Broncos are 10.5 point favorites over the Giants next Sunday evening.
-
Cautious optimism for my Iggles at 4-1...they looked good yesterday and are clicking on both sides of the ball. Short week, Thursday in Carolina will be a great measure of game for both teams!
Fire at Will!
Chris
-
If they stay healthy I think the Packers will be there at the end of the season.
They looked pretty good to me last night.
-
Yeah very exciting game in Dallas yesterday, could have gone either way. Rodgers was at the top of his game and his leadership is exemplary! I’m in a split household with my much better half a Cheesehead (born and raised in WI) Game day is a lot of fun around here when both teams win! :green:
Chris
-
With 4 games in the books the Broncos are 3-1. Prior to the start of the season, I bravely proposed that the Denver team would win 4 games this year. Now, facing a 12-4 extrapolation based on activity so far, I have to cautiously decree that the new prophecy anticipates 10 wins and a playoff berth. Since we are in the same division as Kansas City, who has only to be handed the Lombardi Trophy at this point by the sports reportage corp., it would seem that only a Wild Card is a possibility for the lowly Bronkeys.
Next up is the 0-5 N.Y. Giants in Denver, followed by the 1-4 L.A. Chargers in their new temporary home. Then we travel to K.C. to find out how good they really are.
-
So much for the Packers.
Guess it's up to my Giants! Now that they've lulled the rest of the league into a false sense of security it's time to strike.
-
Is KC the worst 5-0 team ever??!!
Omg, they are horrid! I'm pretty sure they had negative yards in the first half .
-
Rogers is out, broken collarbone. Too bad he is the best, plays on the edge.:(

The 49ers don't appear to be much of a challenge to anyone of late but the Beagles sure look good (in between my customary Sunday power naps). The dog woke me up right in time to see SF's quarterback get his sinuses cleared a few times in rapid succession.

Eagle fans appear to have fallen silent now that there is nothing to gripe about. I guess they are having difficulty adjusting to their new position atop the power rankings. And they play the Broncos this Sunday so that record should remain unblemished for at least 10 more days.

Cautious and very optimistic is about the size of it!
One more game till the mid point of the season and for this die hard Iggles fan it's way to soon to be calling it a done deal. Picking up Ajayi today was a sweet move towards a late season run. It's about time the front office put up the $$$$ to take a serious shot at it.
Heck the Iggles are fun to watch, kinda like the Cowboys last season, just hoping for a different outcome.
FLY IGGLES Fly!

Well, the Eagles are "all in" for this season, and it's actually a smart move. Their young QB is playing well, and the rest of the team of strong throughout. This year, they have a real shot. Now future years??? They gave up a lot to get their QB. Their new RB isn't a long term solution, but he might be what they need for a season or two. If they coax Megatron out of retirement, they could actually be special.
-
I agree about the all in comment. They spent a lot of draft picks on Wentz so had to bolster the team with a lot of one and done free agents. Jefferies, Blount, and Smith will likely not be here next year, haven't read the contract for Ajayi so don't know if he's here for longer. Jefferies and Blunt have done well, as well as vets Agholor and Ertz who are becoming stars. Smith hasn't broken out yet, but still a solid player. Defense is just a monster, even after losing their best cornerback. Never know about injuries, which they've had their share of this year, and what may happen in the playoffs, but they're making a run for it all.
Great weekend for football at this house. Not only did my two teams Steelers and Eagles win, but I went 13 and 0 on both of my pools. Steelers on top of the AFC, Eagles on top of the NFC, could it be my dream year with both in the Super Bowl? A long shot for sure, but possible.
-
Iggles fans could be lulled into a sense of comfort and inevitability by my comments above but new revelations indicate that there is a possibility now of a dominating performance by the Denver Bronkies. The Brock will be starting against them Iggles on Sunday due to Trevor Semien's well-deserved benching. If not for Osweiler stepping in and carrying the 2015 team to the playoffs, Peyton Manning would never have gotten his second ring. Of course, I'm asking you to ignore the fact that, in the interim between his 2 stints in Broncoland, he was tried by two other teams who couldn't get rid of him fast enough.
If he does return to the success he demonstrated in '15, he'll be a very big bargain for Denver as he is now on a short (trial?) contract paying failure grade QB money.
BTW- I've seen this game offered up as Upset of the Week by at least one sports pundit. Brace yourselves.
Personally, I will be surprised if Denver wins 6 games this season ---- and astonished if they win this next one.
-
Yeah macrojack, I agree with your last statement, at 7.5 point underdogs playing in Philly it will be an uphill battle for them to win. Osweiller has been a bust since the Bronco defense limped him through the back half of the season before being benched for a nearly wheelchair bound Manning. Being the NFL that means trap game for the Eagles. They're missing Peters at left tackle which could result in a free run at Wentz for the Bronco linebackers, and the Broncos have a 3rd rated defense against the run, Wentz could be under pressure all day. No film on Brock with this offense could be trouble for the depleted Eagle secondary. Bleacher Report has the game at 32-10 Eagles, so it would be the upset of the week if Denver wins, maybe a big payday game, but I think laying off this one is the best play.
-
Yeah, the Iggles are having a great year, thus far. They are tied with only one other team in the League for most consecutive wins this season, at five-straight.
The only other team in the League with five straight wins are the New Orleans Saints.

well, after this weekend it's pretty clear who the best is at this point in the NFC. Carson Wentz has displayed incredible poise for a sophomore, the likes of which I haven't seen in some time. Last time the Eagles started this good they went to the big one, will this be the year for the Birds ?

and they're still not going.... RAMS baby !!!!! whoa whoa !!

Philly fans are so snake bit that no one mentions the "S" word. O line is a big question mark, Big V is not a shadow of Jason Peters, always gets pushed back in power rushes and can't keep up with the speed rushers, one more injury at any position and they won't be able to protect Wentz. The defensive backfield has held up so far despite injuries, the D line's ability to get there with only four helps a lot. Wentz himself has taken a lot of hits, too many stands there and delivers in the face of the hit stuff. Tough, courageous, smart, sturdy, accurate, all the attributes, but like any team, one injury away from the end of the season. So it's "shhhh" to any talk about the big game in Philly.

LOL...........I'm from Buffalo kid, you don't know what snake bit is !! Regardless, bring on those 'cowgirls' !
-
Speaking of Buffalo...
Buffalo is the "like Team" for the NFC South. With wins against Atlanta and Tampa Bay, the Bills are 2-1, having lost to Carolina in week 2. With a potential tie-breaker at stake, this is an important game for the Saints.
Go Saints!
-
The Saints put 300 yards on the ground against the Bills, winning 47-10. (http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=171239)
Hoping Daniel Lasco is okay... It's never good to see an ambulance on the field. Lastly, Bills' fans are first class folks.
-
The Aints look really impressive this year.
Falcons did pretty well, too.
The G-Men, well, just wait until next year!
-
HUGE come-from-behind win for the Saints today!!! 15 points in the last three minutes to force overtime, and an OT field goal to win it.
I haven't seen a QB run the two-minute offense like that since Joe Montana. Drew Brees made a statement today.
Go Saints!!!

He looked pretty bad the few times I saw him this year but is that where the problem lies?

HUGE implosion by the deadskins. It's easy to look like world beaters when you play a team that quits with 5 minutes to go. :D

so many problems, where does one start ??
-
Will they be revitalised with a new QB or give up even more without Eli at the helm? When teams are in the race for the number one draft pick they tend to keep up the negative momentum. The Giants are racing Cleveland and San Fran for the top pick, they're checking out what they have in the stable to determine whether they'll take a QB with their first pick. It's a reasonable strategy for the future, but a dirty deal for a two time Super Bowl winner. Same thing happened to four time winner Terry Bradshaw, but he threw out his arm.

Wife's company taking us to Panthers Vikings game this weekend. I've never been to a pro football game. Should be fun, especially if Panthers (Newton) don't suck as bad as last week (Congrats JerryM!) but against Vikings they probably will. Newton is frustratingly inconsistent.
Our main team is Pats, we're looking fwd to the big Steelers game. All our neighbors (in Raleigh) are Steelers fans.
-
Hope your game is a good one.
My impression of seeing an NFL game in person is that it's really a made for TV sport.
You'll get to see what the players do during all of the commercials - they stand around and try to get their wind back.
Then again, I saw the Falcons/Vikings an awful long time ago and the score was 12 -3 or something horrible like that and the stands were mostly empty there in Atlanta. Warren Moon was out with an injury so it was his back up playing which was disappointing.
The high point was where some rather portly fellow stood up, took off his shirt, danced around a little bit and then mooned the camera and it was on the aptly named Jumbotron.
That was the only time the crowd perked up.

Want free tickets to the Rams game ?
https://deadspin.com/fox-is-seeking-los-angeles-area-actors-who-can-pretend-1821152419
"If you live in Los Angeles and can convincingly portray a Los Angeles Rams fan, you’re in luck: FOX is looking for people with exactly your unique and rare skill set to pretend to be Rams fans during Sunday’s Rams home game. Set in a fictional world where anyone in Los Angeles gives a shit about the Rams or Chargers, your character will dress in highly stylized Rams “fan” attire, and lose a harrowing team spirit competition against an overwhelming horde of actual Eagles fans."
Can you really blame Californians for giving the finger to the Chargers, Rams and possibly the Raiders?
Only the Chargers, up until this year, have shown some loyalty to their San Diego fan base.

California team owners are weird. Why are they moving to LA when more fans of the opposing team show up at the games? Even the TV ratings are lower than in other cities!

That sucks. I think Foles is one of the best backups in the league. He has a few games to get his feet under himself.

Wow that sucks hopefully Foles can step in and continue getting the W's.

The Vikings Panthers game was great! We were in a sunny corner of the stadium row 6, sun kept us warm. Sold out, stands were pretty full, and no anthem kneeling. :thumb: Lots of Vikings fans were there, a nice bunch sitting around us were from ND. We traded fun trash talk with them as the lead swapped a couple times. Just when I was ready to hate on Newton for losing 10 point lead and the game in last quarter, and for looking bored as usual, he runs for 62 yards to win the game. Very exciting! Keuchly was great as usual, good to see Olson play again, although he did hobble off the field at one point. But Jonathan Stweart was my mvp with 3 TDs. One right at the beginning, ran it right into our corner. :thumb: I thought we would lose to Vikings, but it was a good matchup.
The sunny 45 degree Charlotte crowd gasped in horror like it was a fumble or something when they showed Buffalo snowy game highlights on the big screen.

I said all year that Wentz can't take that many hits and make it through the season. Foles is a great backup, but a backup none the less. I feel for the young man, he had a MVP /Super Bowl season going and you never know when you get that again.
Great weekend for football, lots of really good games across the league. My Eagles and Steelers pulled out late fourth quarter wins, marred only by the loss of Wentz.

I would think if Wentz makes a full comeback to form, the Eagles are looking at multiple Championships in the next 10 years .

What a fucking horrid call on the Steelers!!!!!!!
An obvious touchdown called incomplete!!!
Steelers would have won the game!!
Lost a first round bye and home field advantage.
Even the sports commentators called it a travesty!!

I still think Stafford and the Lions are sandbagging, getting the odds way up...then BAM!!! RIGHT IN THE KISSER AND ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPERBOWL!!!

I saw a replay that showed Jesse James definitely let go of the ball with one hand as he recovered from contact with the ground. It was incomplete according to the NFL rules. What is at stake at the time of the call is irrelevant. Either you meet the bizarre, indefensible, confusing "catch" rules set up by the NFL or you don't. He didn't.
In the modern game, only a small percentage of catches are caught cleanly. Nowadays receivers stop the ball and then try to gather it after the velocity has been eliminated. Overcoming the "catch" quandary is as simple as catching and holding the ball without clumsy juggling. Does anybody know why receivers knock the ball down first, then attempt to gather it in?

I have never seen or heard what constitutes a "football move" in regards to a catch. One would think if a receiver has the ball with a firm grip in his hands and then turns his body and reaches for the goal line that that would result in a football move, a la Dez Bryant a few years ago.
-

GOAT
Also, “football move” has not been in the rules for years.
-
It was debatable even considering the incomprehensible NFL rules. AFAIK the ball can move if it touches the ground if it's in control of the player. James had his right hand under the ball which was pressed against the back of his left hand, he never lost control of the ball or used the ground to maintain control of the ball, I feel it should have been a catch.
That the rule is stupid is a different discussion. Dez got robbed a couple of years ago and James got robbed yesterday. If a running back reaches over the goal line and fumbles when the ball hits the endzone it's a touchdown, if a player fumbles the ball when it hits the ground it's not a fumble, if a receiver is deemed to be in control of the ball in the field of play and fumbles after the plane is crossed, it should still be a touchdown.
-
Does anybody know why receivers knock the ball down first, then attempt to gather it in?
Because QB's throw the ball at up to 60 mph!!! :o Though in games, it's probably around 50 on those bullets.
-
That call was total BS. I am not a fan for either team. Just turned on TV and game was on. Do not watch Football any longer due to kneeling nonsense.
Seems NE always gets the calls. FIXED to me.

The ball was caught!
Jones was on his knees caught the ball and with control broke the plane of the goal line...Touchdown!!!
How many pylon dives end up with the ball coming loose out of bounds? But there was control when the player broke the plane?
Somebody call 911 there was a robbery at Heinz field yesterday with plenty of video footage to back it up! :x

The rules are written a certain way and the refs are instructed as to the official interpretation. According to the specifics that apply in this type of case, the call was correct. Rules for receivers concerning what constitutes a completed pass were used to determine the decision in this case. Rules for running backs (or anyone else handling a football) are different from those that determine possession. A running back has possession or he has a fumble. Passes, which can be either complete or incomplete, have a distinct set of qualifiers including having control of the ball all the way to the ground. That same ground can cause a fumble for others but for a receiver who has yet to establish possession, any loss of control means that the pass is incomplete. I have to blame the receiver for failing to satisfy the rules, not the ref for interpreting them in a way that meets the requirements of his job but fails the expectations of partisan fans. Some parallel to this call occurs in every game in every sport in every language on the planet. Always someone feels they were robbed. I believe Gronk felt similarly cheated on a call just within the last couple of weeks. My own feeling is simple -- catch the ball in a way that can't be debated.
-
The ground can't cause a fumble. If a runner controls the ball when contacted by an opposing player or crosses the goal line and it comes out when it hits the ground, the player is down by contact or scores a touchdown. If a runner falls out of bounds and looses the ball they don't call it a fumble. If a receiver catches the ball and goes to the ground in control of the ball, as in this case, then reaches across the goal line, it's a catch, then a touchdown. NFL rules for what constitutes a catch are complete bs.

You forgot to tack on the:  'cause I know you're kidding. 'cause not without at least a semi-legit running game.
I went to the Browns game Sunday. On the 30 yard line, row 9 - best seat ever at a game for me. I dressed for the cold weather, but failed to consider the frozen plastic seat so had to sit on my gloves. My take away from the game: they'll be lucky to win as many as 3 games per season with their current QB and coach. Both terrible. Minimal talent on the team. Zero entertainment factor. Dismal. It was "Fan Appreciation Day". If the organization would spend half their effort and cost of "Fan Appreciation Day" on scouting and landing some talent, including a real coach ... that would show some real appreciation for their fans.

Worst season in memory. Horrible officiating - lots of mistakes, slow 'instant' replay, stupid rules, way too many prissy calls. Too much off the field drama - kneeling, spoiled players, personal shuffles, money talk. Slow play - games keep getting longer. Announcers that have diarrhea of the mouth, ignore the game to yap or do interviews. Turning more and more into the WWF. And in the end pretty much the same teams making the playoffs every year, thanks Buffalo for injecting a few new faces (and finally getting some national TV time). And unfortunately the college game is following suit.
Wish college and NFL would adopt some of the CFL rules/practices.

Show business. Everything in our country is, and has been for some time, tailored to maximize profits at the expense of anything that might compromise that "taking".. Any gimmick, any ginned up controversy, any rule change, every referees' decision, is considered a business opportunity and is manipulated thusly.
Look around the nation and you will see it at every turn. Our priorities are self-defeating. We are bound for collapse from within if we are not ultimately smitten by off shore forces.
All we need to do to get things right is to eliminate those pesky players with their human concerns. Fantasy Football is the gateway for that move. Just another step toward automation and virtual reality. Soon you could be rooting for the image of Exxon's DeShaun Watson playing for the Google Houston Texans against the team led by the image of Microsoft's Russell Wilson leading the Starbuck's Seattle Seahawks at Trump Fantasy Dome Virtual Stadium and Hotel. Tickets are $100/game for those who have not bought viewership shares in either team. If you have sprung for the $1000/yr. membership fee, all games are available for download at any time and "LIVE" games are available to you in "REAL TIME" for just a loyalty pledge and a $15 spectator tax. Nice, huh? The soul is long gone. Now all that remains is eliminating the bodies. Following the identified arc should complete the job in just a few more seasons.

Very well written macrojack, your dystopian view may come true someday, but not in the foreseeable future, which means not before I'm dead. The NFL is a cash cow that is paying everybody buckets of money, they're not changing anything until they're forced to. The Goodell contract extension says the status quo will be maintained.

So I have my two teams in the playoffs and I'm not hopeful. The Eagles need the spark that is Wentz to be great, Foles is not that. I would pick any team in the playoffs ahead of them.
The Steelers are good enough to win anywhere, but can also lay an egg at any given point. At this point in his career some days Ben doesn't have it. Sometimes the secondary allows big plays or has big penalties at just the wrong time. The Patriots have had an uncanny ability to exploit weaknesses in the Steelers and the road is most likely through New England. I got a bad feeling about this.

Jerry - Please remember that this is a "devil you know" situation. Getting rid of Chuckie is an attractive proposition but whoever thought he was right for the job will be hiring his replacement. The space will not remain empty. Rumor has it they are already interviewing and Kelly Anne Conway is the selection committee's first choice right now. Your safest pathway is likely complete avoidance of Monday Night Football. And you won't be alone. NFL viewership is down 9.7% compared to last year. I'm finding that I am more interested in the game results - The STANDINGS - than I am in seeing the actual game action.
Do you hang out in the kitchen while your meal is being prepared for you? Do you need to see it made in order to enjoy the outcome? Can you benefit from and enjoy trading stocks without seeing the floor action? Same with the NFL. Just check in periodically to see which way the games are running. If viewership dips sufficiently, perhaps the League will get a clue and stop the nonsense. I predict that will never happen. The ownership is comprised of old white guys who own the team so that they can take all your money and bask in your adulation. If you want to have any influence at all, you must learn that the only vote you get comes from how you spend your money ....... there is nothing else about you that has any meaning to them.

Blake Bortles sucks shit!!!
The Bills are pathetic !!
I've never seen two playoff teams that suck this hard!!
-
But Blake seems to be their best running back . He can't complete a 2 yard screen pass . Another sack on him!!
My God, do not watch this game !!
Both teams are pathetic!!!
A whopping 3-3 half time score !!!
-
Could just be nerves. Wait till the middle of the 4th when they start scoring like crazy.

I was hoping for a Panthers miracle, it turned out pretty much as I expected. Drew is just an amazing QB.
I hope the Saints have continued success. Congrats JerryM and enjoy!

Nick Foles played very well in the send half !!
Defense held a great Falcons to 12 points !!! And held a fourth down and goal for the Falcons to an incomplete pass!! Great second half ! Fly Eagles Fly!!!

Did you hear the big exhale after Jones missed the catch?
A team win for the underdogs! :green:

I was sure the Eagles would get killed but nope.
Congratulations to the Beagles. They're getting closer.
-
+1 Steve, I had the Falcons as well. Of course I'm overjoyed to have my Eagles win, but don't have any more faith in Foles than I did before the game. He's a good backup quarterback, won't throw a bunch of interceptions, he can get you a defensive win like yesterday's game, I'm glad we have him. He's not the guy to drive down with two minutes to go and get a touchdown to win the game. The Eagles defense was outstanding against a very good offense. They played clutch under pressure the whole game, they've become a very scary defense. They can beat either the Saints or the Vikings on any given day at home, not sure they can handle the Patriots at a neutral site.
Now, GO STEELERS!!!!
-
Pittsburgh in a world of hurt , down 14-0 in the first quarter!!!
Jacksonville running and passing at will. Ben through his first interception at their own 20!!!!! Can't run the ball either!!!
Jaguars look way more physical!! Dominating the Steelers in the first quarter!!!

Let's go !!!!!

Wow, Vikings win, unbelievable game! Big Red Machine should be hoppin' now :thumb:

Wow; what a game. Congrats Vikings! :thumb:

Wow what a game and a weekend for football! :o
Way to go Vikes fans...see yuz next Sunday in South Philly.

Insane ending to Vikings game !!!!
Three seconds , all defender had to do was tackle him inbounds !!! Omg!!!

This season was so dull but the playoffs are really making up for things.
Eagles/Vikings game should be really good because who knows what's going to happen.
Maybe the Jaguars will surprise me and bump off New England.

At least you aren't the guy that blew the tackle! :banghead: :surrender:

Now the Vikings have their own "Hail Mary" pass....reminiscent of the Roger Staubach to Drew Pearson bomb that beat Minnesota in the 1975 playoffs.
-
So? What was the reasoning behind Minnesota's being forced to go for a conversion after the miracle TD? They could neither win nor lose on the strength of the P.A.T. and the Saints were already in their locker room and the field was cluttered with civilians. The play was so meaningless that the Saints injured punter, Thomas Morestead, was among the stragglers who wandered out to the line of scrimmage to stand and watch Keenum take a knee. My best guess is that it was done for the Las Vegas line. Anybody else have a better explanation why this seemingly unjustifiable and fruitless formality was imposed?

Agree completely. Which rule applies?
I heard on Dan Patrick's show that evidently it is a rule that you MUST run the extra point play. IIRC, in overtime games, if the winning play is a TD, that is the end of it. No extra point.
Dan also mentioned that the word is that because the Vikings chose to kneel on the extra point play, there was 1 BILLION dollar swing in the gambling stuff! :thumb:

Not an overtime game. Think of it as a walk-off home run. The team at bat may have only one out but the game is over. Vegas is not favored in any way in the NFL rulebook.

the only Dan Patrick worth listening to was TX LT Governor Dan Patrick who called in the Texas Rangers to help recover Tom Brady's Super Bowl jersey.
Here's one of those great prognostications that "sports" Dan Patrick wiffed on - we love to rag on him in Pats (your next Super Bowl winner) country

Gotta wonder what he was thinking when he just glanced off his side, missing the tackle? :dunno:

He was trying to miss him? One of the announcers made a comment about this. Something like perhaps the defender thought he was going to hit the receiver before the ball arrived and therefore tried to avoid him to not get an interference call. Me thinks something different.
-
He's a Rook; nothing more. He made a total Rookie mistake. He'll never make that mistake again in his career, ever. I mean, really, he has to watch the cat video until September... :|
-
Errr, he's not a rookie, he's only in his 1st season. :thumb:
This is what their 18th game.
I only just heard someone on ESPN or somewhere make this comment. He not only screwed up but he took his teammate out, who may have been able to tackle the guy before he scored and then...
Saints win! Saints win! :green:
Oh, well. Wait'll next year.

What a terrible way to lose a game. Painful to watch. I mean even a chip on the receiver could have given the other guys in the frame a chance to tackle him.
It was a Greg Norman moment.
-
Yeah, it was pretty horrible. But he's a Rook, with only 18 games under his belt. To his credit, he had five tackles (three solo), two blocked passes and a key interception.
As for the last play, he Rooked it. As brutal as that is, there's nothing more to it than that.
I like that he spoke with the press after the game, and that he's owning it.
Time to move on... Where is Drew playing next season?

I told the wife today that Drew should quit. They have a knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm in La. BTW lol !!

Nah - there's some talk about Cousins going there but the Broncs really have to squeeze their salary cap for him - so I'm sure Brees would command much more than Kirk.

From what I have read, Drew Brees would pay to play in New Orleans. Too bad money gets in the way of good sense so often. For quality of life reasons, I'd take a nice average paycheck to sit on the Patriot bench rather than deal with the endless disappointment and shame of playing for the Browns or Buffalo in their climate. I find losing all the time quite depressing. In addition, given the choices he has and the prospects his new team roster promises, I can't imagine, Brees would be very tempted by any other offer.

Hi Gene,
Unlikely that I will travel again. Very happy to remain in Colorado, although I can go so far as to say New Orleans (and possibly Nashville) are the only places in the south that could realistically tempt me to leave home.
Brew Drees could go straight from Saints QB to Mayor of New Orleans just by indicating that he would be willing. Why leave that?
-
Williams and all the Saints defenders were most certainly coached up to do anything to avoid a defensive penalty on that play. I'm certain he was dodging Diggs to avoid a penalty, unfortunately taking out the trailing cornerback who could have made the tackle. To his credit the young man made no excuses and owned it, a real stand up guy. No one's mentioning the fantastic catch Diggs made and his tight rope run along the sidelines, you could see him brace for the hit that was coming and when it didn't he was the most surprised guy on the field. Great game.
Philly fans didn't really care who comes here, perhaps a little more afraid of Brees but not by much. Mostly they spend all day on talk radio making excuses for Foles and pontificating on how he could pull it out. I give the edge to Keenum over Foles on two equally matched teams so expect to see the Vikings against the Parts in the Bowl.

Letitroll98 - You are easily the best football analyst commenting on AC. Your Super Bowl projection aligns with my impulse and the Patriots are a team I much admire. Despite all that though, I have a funny hunch that J-ville might be heading to Minnesota. Bortles is newly competent and the Jags' defense has extreme shutdown potential. As usual, TB is the wild card.
-
In the end it doesn't matter who won the Saints-Vikings game because the Patriots are going to win the Superbowl one more time and then Kraft/Belichick/Brady empire will come to and end. :)

I would have been a Vikes guy all the way if things ended differently.
Underdogs rule!!!
-
Happily I was dead wrong about the Eagles today, I was certain Foles couldn't put up this kind of performance against a top defense. He shredded the Vikes in every way, congrats to the young man. The defense has allowed a total of 17 points in the two playoff games and pressures heavily up the middle which upsets Brady. I give them a good chance to upset the Pats.
-
I truly don't understand rooting for someone simply because they're less skilled and don't work as hard as their opponents. Underdogs are underdogs because they're not as good- why do people actively hope for the less prepared team to defeat the better prepared team? That's the opposite of meritocracy! At any rate the Pats have been my favorite AFC team for many many years. When you're a Vikings fan that's okay for the regular season but that leaves you needing something to do in the postseason!
If Brady and the boys win this one it will truly be something historic! I'm pumped, hopefully they'll get it done. Six Superbowl rings, wouldn't that be something to see! :thumb:

Brady seems to mind his own business. I fail to see why so many are so petty in their suspicions about the game.
Do they not realize that Deflategate and Spygate type adventures do not arise to handicap teams or players in a situation where the team is being given preferential treatment?
In the most recent game, the crying is back. "Our team is so magnificent that the Patriots could only win if someone helped them or they otherwise cheated".
In last year's Super Bowl, Atlanta got their ass handed to them even though they went in at halftime leading by 3 TDs. Do you remember anyone complaining then about cheating or collusion? If Brady had the personnel that Jax fielded for Bortles, Brady would never lose again. Same goes for Denver, Houston, Carolina, Miami., K.C., Baltimore and others. Debates rage about whether it is the coach or the QB that makes the magic happen, but somehow this team always manages to squeeze out the win. When Gronk goes out of the game and Edelman has not played all year, suddenly, out of nowhere, Danny Amendola becomes the game winning superstar. In the last SB it was James White who stole the show. The Pats always come through somehow. maybe you are just witnessing the luck of the Irish. Whatever the case, remember that the Pats played the first quarter of last season completely without Brady and still made it to the biggest game and scored the biggest comeback win in the 51 year history of the big game. Brady is mortal. Hell, he was backup to Brian Griese in college. He makes an occasional big goof but in the grand scheme he remains the greatest QB ever to start an NFL game.
As for refs, they make lots of mistakes. That's why replay exists. Freak plays occur pretty often. Cameras add intrigue and, I think, overall improve the fairness of the game. Replacing Triplette and Borger might help too. The breaks seem to be distributed in a random sort of fairness, as do the penalties. Sports fans in all sports have always howled and yammered about unfairness when they don't get the call. They complain it isn't fair yet, when their team gets handed a ridiculous miscarriage of justice ruling, they have nothing to say. "Fair" only matters when it benefits them.
Three of the penalties against the Jags were such obvious pass interference that no one thought to challenge them and Romo called all three "easy calls". Those three penalties probably accounted for more than half of their penalty yards.
-
So Rob, the Eagles were the less meritorious team last night, the team that didn't work as hard? Bullshit. They out worked, out hustled, out coached, and out played the Vikings on every level. The Patriots are a very good team that has been caught cheating several times, I do agree the PI calls were legit yesterday, but there's a lot of smoke for no fire. The Eagles lost their starting quarterback who was in an MVP season, their starting middle linebacker, their all pro left tackle, and their playmaker running back all out for the season, and still made the Super Bowl in a dominate performance. I hope they crush Brady and his band of cheaters.
I truly don't understand rooting for someone simply because they're less skilled and don't work as hard as their opponents. Underdogs are underdogs because they're not as good- why do people actively hope for the less prepared team to defeat the better prepared team? I will admit I was hoping to see the Vikings get to the Bowl just so their fans could have a rare hometown Bowl party.
However, the Eagles did indeed earn their spot.
I was frustrated with the Pats win. Not that they did not play well and earn many points - but those 2 penalties late in the first half by the Jaguars defense lost the game for them. If they had held on with the 14-3 lead into half time, no way the Pats come all the way back.
But, that's why they play the games.
Pulling for the Eagles, but expecting the Pats to take yet another trophy home.
-
OK. The NFL is comprised of 32 teams, all of whom are owned by big time investors who want the glory of winning a championship with all their hearts but who are much more concerned about protecting and growing their investment. There are literally billions of dollars at stake. Do you suppose they stand by and allow N.E. to cheat their way to glory year in and year out without saying or doing anything about it? If only they knew what the sports fans are privy to. Then they would join together and change the rules or have the rules better enforced or do some cheating themselves similarly. Jerry Jones? No problem there. If he was aware of cheating, I'm sure he'd just have another drink, another blonde, or another cosmetic surgery. Apparently, despite the cheating that the public can see so clearly, Jerry just is too shy to speak out, to object.
What you should take away from this is that the Jags are just coming into their own. They have one of the most talent stacked teams in the league and the Patriots nemesis, Tom Coughlin. They will be a powerhouse for the foreseeable future. The Pats are aging out of the B&B era. There is an enormous shakeup in the offing as E. Manning, D. Brees, T. Brady, P. Rivers, B. Rothlisberger all approach retirement. Hard to picture the game without them. But it will all continue until ultimately the NFL falls victim to its own greed. Only then will the cheating accusations cease.
-
Just wish there was more focus on the game. Tons of distractions: owners, league politics, players off field poor/criminal behavior, over or poor officiating, instant replay (which take forever), challenges, commercials (way too many), announcers who can't stop talking, interviews during the game (interruptions), 2 minute warnings (an excuse for more commercials), even plays (which take very little actual time during the 3 - 4 hour boardcast) get cut off to make room for all these distractions.
Even with commercials you could see all the "ball in play" of a football game in 10 minutes (Super Bowl 7 was reportedly less than 7 minutes), making the rest fluff.
-
However, the Eagles did indeed earn their spot.
damn straight !

LOL, you gotta be kidding ???

hope you're wrong !

On ESPN just now Max Kellerman made a great argument against the pass interference call in the fourth quarter. The receiver was out of bounds and the ball was uncatchable in addition to there being contact by both players. I didn't catch all of that during the game, but he makes good points that it was the difference in the game, the Pats won by four and without that interference play they lose. I also point to the recovered fumble that was blown dead when the Jags player was never touched and had a clear path to the endzone which would have made it 27-10 and out of touch for the Pats. He acknowledged the Pats played great and the Jags didn't close the deal when they were still ahead, but noted you can't beat the Pats when the refs are on the Pats side as well. The Patriots are a great team that took advantage of their breaks, but never would have won without the refs helping them out.
In the last five games the Pats had a 390 yard to 45 yard advantage in penalties. Well coached team or something else, you decide. The Jags claim Amendola head butted a Jag player in front of the ref and didn't get called. The ref came over and congratulated Brady right after the game, that's not suppose to happen. I have no evidence of anything and agree with macrojack's comments about the matter, but if there was that much smoke at my house I'd be calling the fire department.
-
One of the knocks on Foles is his inconsistency. Although Wentz was not missed yesterday, I suspect he will be sorely missed in 13 days when the refs conspire with Putin to hand yet another Super Bowl to those cheating Pats.
Philadelphia's best chance lies in getting into Brady's attic and destroying that damn portrait. Of course, then Brian Hoyer would play the game of his life and send the Iggles crashing back to earth. Let's remember that the N.E. team, a the season began was the only one of the final four who was given a good chance of being in the post season at all. Nobody's calling the other three flukes, yet the Patriots have to have cheated to be in the final game. Bear in mind that the refs are highly fallible. Their calls are often bad but we have no evidence (just suspicions) that they are motivated by bad intentions.
Read JLM concerning many of the things we should be complaining about. Is it even possible to avoid perpetual badgering from advertisers anymore? Seems like it confronts me aggressively everywhere I turn. Does it get to you?
-
Any officiating conspiracy will end up in Goodell’s office who is Kraft’s puppet! The battle is over before it can be fought.
Sucks that a game can be negatively impacted on a non reviewable judgement call!
-
I agree with a lot of what is being said, Foles has been up and down with each game and could be in line for a bad game in two weeks.
Kellerman's point was the Pats are hard enough to beat with equal ref calls on both sides, with the bad calls they are impossible to beat. I think it's most probable that the refs give the calls to the Pats much like LeBron and Durant get the benefit of the doubt, but they still get the calls. My comments about the Patriots being cheaters refer to their public convictions for cheating, inflategate and videogate.
-

That's right!!! I was there when Robert Kraft successfully sold Roger Goodell on the idea of initiating what became Deflategate. It wasn't easy getting Pagano and Irsay on board until they were informed that Kraft hated the idea. That wasn't true, of course, but it got the flattened ball rolling and created just the boost New England needed to come back in the second half with a decisive victory.
If Robert Kraft had not deceptively arranged for his team to be fined a million dollars and its first round draft pick revoked and its star QB to be suspended for 25% of the season, the Patriots would never have taken the Super Bowl. Right?

I agree with a lot of what is being said, Foles has been up and down with each game and could be in line for a bad game in two weeks.
Kellerman's point was the Pats are hard enough to beat with equal ref calls on both sides, with the bad calls they are impossible to beat. I think it's most probable that the refs give the calls to the Pats much like LeBron and Durant get the benefit of the doubt, but they still get the calls. My comments about the Patriots being cheaters refer to their public convictions for cheating, inflategate and videogate.
The first half of the game in question seemed normal enough. The Pats ended the first half against the Colts with a 17-7 advantage. This was the half during which Brady supposedly enjoyed an overwhelming advantage due to under inflated footballs. In the second half of that game, Brady & Co. went on to a 28-0 advantage bringing the score to 45-7 finally.
So, according to the evidence, Brady led his team to a 10 point advantage at the half. After his overwhelming advantage was removed, he beat them by 4 touchdowns in the second half. You may recall that the Patriots play most teams pretty even in the first 2 quarters; half time scores are usually not lopsided. The thing to notice is what actually occurs. What could be, should be, or would be really can't be considered factors in the outcome. I can't prove that the Pats didn't mess with air pressure. I can only point out that it did not seem to help or hamper them during what proved to be a pretty typical victory. Likewise, I feel compelled to mention that the balls are all turned over to the officiating crew for inspection and confirmation. If, perchance, they dropped the ball by failing to regulate ball inflation, why were the Patriots punished? What other teams have been called out for such shenanigans? Surely, with billions of dollars on the line, some other teams seek to acquire illicit advantages. Maybe they all do. Only one ever seems to attract this sort of attention. I wonder if this happens out of frustration or jealousy. If you can't beat them, frame them. Nothing lass has ever worked.

JLM and macrojack, how much are you willing to pay for less advertising?
I don't want to pay to watch, but I don't want the ads either. Unfortunately, unless your the Masters Golf Tournament, that just isn't going to happen.

No one is complaining about the existence of advertising during NFL games. What you read, and apparently misinterpreted for your own purposes, was annoyance at the ever increasing preponderance of advertising. JLM indicated the possibility that rule changes have been added solely for the purpose of creating additional ad space.
Maybe so, I would not put it past them. It's a shame private parties are permitted sole use of the public airwaves. Could lead to a government propaganda network.
-
So Rob, the Eagles were the less meritorious team last night, the team that didn't work as hard?
That's the opposite of what of I said. The Eagles outplayed and outworked the Vikes on every level, and they deserved to win. As for the Pats cheating- that's mostly horseshit and everyone knows it. But the haters cling to it to explain why their teams can't execute at the same level as NE.

Watch it online and you won't see any ads. At least unless they are changing it this year. The last couple years I've watched the SB online- when a commercial comes on they just black out/go to dead air. Apparently you're "punished" by watching online so don't "get to" see the ads. Suits me fine! The inane advertising is one of the reasons I haven't watched a full football game from start to finish in five years.

I don't care how you spin it, you guys are still complaining about ad frequency during the game.
It isn't complicated.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...
So we have a remake of the 2005 Superbowl. That's cool, I already have the shirt. :thumb:
Under the heading of "Defense wins Championships", I give the edge to Philly.
-
I apologize if that's not what you meant Rob. You being a Vikings fan and the way the post was written I assumed you meant both games, I'm glad we agree. We have mad respect for the Vikings here in the Philly metro area. Everybody likes Keenum and about half the fan base thought Foles couldn't handle the Vikes defense. The two turnovers early were crucial, without them it's a different game.
-
macrojack, I respect the opinions and logic displayed on your posts, so allow me to respectfully disagree. Our difference is fundamental, but simple. When the Colts handled the ball they immediately said it was soft and under inflated, without any pressure gauge there was enough difference in feel for the players to bring it to the refs attention. It doesn't matter how Brady played in the second half, whether he played better or worse, he thought he played better with deflated balls. He wasn't accused of playing better with deflated balls, he was accused of ordering the balls to be deflated so he could play better. It's motive and evidence that determines intent. The balls were deflated and people testified Brady liked them that way, nothing more needs to be proved, the Comish then makes his ruling. The courts agreed. Thanks for allowing me to express my side, I welcome any response.

I obviously wish they'd have played a better game but overall I'm pretty happy with their season! Kind of like where Philly was, the Vikes had their starting QB go down early with Bridgewater still not ready to go. Case was nobody to me at the time so I thought we were looking at 8-8. So in my mind they overachieved. It will be an interesting situation for Minnesota- all three QB's are free agents! And all have a lot of upside. Bradford has superstar potential for half of each season but can't stay on the field. Teddy was really progressing until a gruesome injury almost ended his career (and possible his life! :o). Case was outstanding, and learned the offense really quickly. I'll be interested to see who they keep and who is gone.
I also don't mean to downplay the role of luck. In the NBA with a best of seven series the best team almost always wins. Sure, injuries play a role and luck is a big part of that. But in the NFL it just comes down to one game! Anyone can beat anyone one time. It also comes down to matchups.
It should be an interesting matchup in the SB. I think NE is the better team and will be well prepared. But again, on any given Sunday right? Anything can happen! That's what makes the NFL interesting.
-

That's hilarious! The "courts" didn't agree there was any merit, they merely agreed that the way the NFL rules are drawn up Goodell is the petty dictator of his own little fiefdom. Three different Universities did their own tests and research and concluded that in all likelihood nobody messed with the balls, at all. It was the second great Witch Hunt to come out of NE. Again, the Pats are the best to everyone is gunning for them. The really outrageous thing about the whole bullshit ordeal is that the punishment was made up on the spot. You may note the the Vikings were caught putting balls in the dryer to change the pressure. :shh: You know what happened? They were told to "knock it off" :dunno: By that I mean caught red handed not one fucking thing happened! :xmas:
Oh, King Roger will say the punishment was more severe for the Pats because of their past [horseshit] transgressions. Well, even if that's true any punishment to be doled out should be spelled out ahead of time. It's like the cops pulling you over for going 1 mph over and shooting you in the head! And then it turns out the cop was eating donuts with his radar gun turned off since the NFL has zero evidence of the "crime" to begin with. And the 'Spygate' was just as inane. The 'crime' they committed was in doing something that had been permitted the previous season- the rule had recently been changed. Note also that taping the practice was permissible, just not from the spot they taped from.
Whatever. Every team has ways to cheat. I used to work with a guy that spent five years working with an NFL team. It's remarkable the ways teams have to cheat, from messing with the opposing teams shows and the thermostat in their lockers to piling snow under their seating to piping in fake crowd noise (that last one is something the Vikes were caught doing.). They say if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'. Joe Montana has some great stories about the ways they found to cheat back in the old days.

From wiki:
... For his alleged part in the scandal, Tom Brady was originally suspended by the league for four games of the 2015 regular season, which was upheld by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in an internal appeal.[2] The matter moved to federal court, where Judge Richard M. Berman vacated Goodell's four-game suspension of Brady,[3] allowing Brady to resume his playing duties for the entirety of the 2015 season. However, following the conclusion of the season, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated Brady's four-game suspension, which became effective for the 2016 regular season.[4] After losing a request for a rehearing, Brady announced he would accept the suspension.[5][6] ...
It appears the court agreed in the end.

I just hope that the SB this year is a close one.
I enjoy the game way more when the score remains within 7, and both teams have a legit opportunity to win.
I will be making chili and exposing my girls to the game as always. They typically want to see the half time show more than the football, but put up with their father ranting at the screen during play. I don't watch a ton of football anymore, but have exposed them to Game 7's (any sport) and championship games (most sports).
I tell them that their future life partner may enjoy the game, so they should at least have a passing knowledge!

Just buy the nfl.com Game Pass option. Don't look at any news until the game is over and you watch the whole game in just about an hour - the plays only. If you get half way through the season, it costs less.

LOL, he'll be remembered for more reasons than that. As much as it troubles me, should he and the Pats win next Sunday, he'll be remembered as the greatest, his ring count alone will be something no one on this forum will probably ever see again !

I had posted that I wanted to see a good game as I did not have a horse in that race. I’d say it was a very good game, and an underdog win was a fun outcome. Congrats to Eagles fans for their first!

Good game but the worst half time entertainment in all the years I have been watching the Super Bowl
+1
No 2nd/3rd acts, no special props, terrible sound, and music only suited for the under 35 crowd. Glad when it was finally over.
-
Couldn't care about either team, but I am curious how a seasoned SB team like NE could lose to a first time coach and NICK FOLES???
Quandary about their QB's next year for Philly!
-
Scoring 33 points might win you the average Super Bowl but allowing 41 points will pretty certainly lose any Super Bowl for you. Future for the Pats does not look too bright but their Divisional rivals rarely manage to keep N.E. out of the playoffs. The biggest wild card in their future, aside from Brady's age, would appear to revolve around finding adequate replacements at OC and DC.
Meanwhile, the NFC appears poised for another protracted string of Super Bowl wins. Consider the young and already quite successful Rams, Eagles and Vikings. Throw in the Falcons, Panthers, and Saints, all of whom could have been in this game instead of the Eagles. Then there are the rebuilding Giants, the Packers, Cowboys and the Seahawks, any one of which could return to dominance next season. Then, maybe, the 49ers, Lions or Deadskins might find their way also.
On the AFC side, it's not quite so rosy. Denver is long lost, the Steelers and Patriots are aging quickly, and the Ravens will be lost without Ozzie Newsome. Those 4 teams account for all but one of the NFC SB wins in this century. The strongest candidates seem to be Houston, Jax, K.C., L.A. Chargers, Raiders and possibly Miami.
Anyone else care to speculate?
-
Well you can count me as one who thought that Timberlakes show was excellent.
I don't have any of his music but have caught him in concert on the tele a few times. Always great. The man has talent.
And the best SB I've seen by far. Congrats Philly!
-
Charmerci you are wrong. The Eagles beat a dangerous Falcons team as underdogs, destroyed a great and favored Vikings team.
The Eagles were a stronger team all the way around. Every commentator mentioned this. Foles was playing masterfully the past two playoff games!!! And if you follow Foles you would know that he had one of the best seasons on record with the Eagles . Something like 27 touchdowns to 2 interceptions!!
The Eagles has a waaay better defense, but didn't really show last night, except for the strip sack., which was huge.
-

YUUUGE! :thumb:

I would also add that Peterson out coached the great Bill Belichick !! Peterson was coaching High School 9 years ago.
-
Everybody is freaking in Patriots land!!!!!
Why did BB not play his best corner back who played 98% of the snaps ??!!!!
He says he played the players he thought would give them the best chance to win??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their secondary got destroyed all game!!!!!!!
WTF
BB is lying . What did Butler do????? Can't be that bad as he played on special teams!!
Is BB really a great big game coach!!!!!!!!!????????????? He has only won 2 of the the last 5!! The 2 he did win he was bailed out by a fluke interception which should have been a run play to Marshan Lynch. And the other win last year, he was out coached to a 28-3 half time deficit , only to be bailed out by Tom and the greatest come back in Superbowl history. The 2 losses to the Giants, where the Patriots were clearly a better team and favored. And a loss last night to a team they were supposed to beat by 4 points. But BB stuck to his military guns and benched his best corner back??!!

Congratulations to the Eagles, Philadelphia, and all of Pennsylvania. The first SB is such a sweeeeet victory!
I loved the look on Brady's face after that fumble. One could argue that Brandon Graham won the SB for the Eagles.
-
"Fletcher Cox is the greatest thing since wonderbread and will eat up the Pats!" Yeah, right, look at the stats/ film.
"The Eagles defense is the best ever and will shut down the Patriots!" Yeah, right, look at the stats / film / scoreboard.
"Foles outdueled Brady!" Yeah, right, look at the stats / film.
"One play by an Eagles defender cost the Patriots the game!" Yeah, right, look at the film.
"The Patriots defense, except for Gilmore, played their worst game of the year, and played without Malcolm Butler at CB." EXACTLY, look at the stats / film. And if you think Belichick / Matt Patricia (good luck Lions) game planned really well for two weeks, and don't think Belichick's ego factored heavily in this loss, then I can't help you.
Congrats to the Eagles, you won. Enjoy it.
-
Cox was game planned for, as I said they would do. They doubled and chipped him the whole game and did a good job with it.
Yup, the Pats got huge chunk plays the whole game that led to the 33 points. I expected the shots downfield as that's what got the Eagle defense all year.
Foles absolutely outgunned Brady, look at the score.
I agree that one play didn't cost them the game. It was a pivotal play that made a big impact at the end of the game.
I agree that Butler being out was a big factor. Losing any starter in the defensive backfield is devastating because it messes with the communication. Traditionally during big games if a starter misbehaves he sits for the start so he's not listed on the roster as a starter, then you put him in. Why Belichick benched him at the last second we may never know.
Thanks for the congrats. I don't want to presuppose, but it seems like you're a deflated Pat fan? The Pats played a great game and had a chance to win in the fourth quarter. The Eagles were the better team, they traded punches with the Pats the whole game, but the Pats didn't lose the game on bad plays, they were beaten by a superior team. Pat fans have nothing to hang their heads about, their team played courageously.

That's B.S., read Foles' comments, and this quote from the article, "Although it's possible that Brady purposely snubbed Foles, it doesn't seem that way and that's because Brady DID shake hands with at least one Eagles player, and that player was Fletcher Cox."

One player out of how many? Looked like a lot on midnight green jerseys on the field that Brady could have taken a few minuets to say “ good game” to. So many current players were little kids when he began his run. He has an obligation to the game to do the right thing...then again he is a Patriot!
Hope to make it to the parade down Broad St on Thursday. :D :thumb:

What are you, the handshake auditor and the Martha Stewart of football post-game etiquette? Read this: http://www.mlive.com/sports/2018/02/tom_brady_doesnt_shake_hands_a.html (http://www.mlive.com/sports/2018/02/tom_brady_doesnt_shake_hands_a.html)
I lived in Phila. 10 years including graduating from Temple for undergrad and going to med school. Seen my share of Eagles games on tv and in the stadium. The city has a goodly amount of sports savvy fans, and then there are the blowhards that don't know how to act or speak and thus they tarnish the fan reputation nationally. I hope some day the latter group will learn, but I'm not holding my breath.
I hope the Eagles and the responsible longtime fans enjoy their 1st Super Bowl parade, they are a blast and each one is great. It'll be a bigger deal to clean up than the Mummers Day parade, and I hope SEPTA can keep up with the increased ridership. Sure...LOL...and you'll be the Grand Marshal for the Eagles parade
-
I suspect LeGarret Blount is still sporting a satisfied grin.
-
Here's hoping all you Eagle fans in Philly have whole bunch o' fun today! Should be a good time as long as no one gets hurt.
-
Over 3 million people lining the parade route, no reports of arrests, everyone is exuberant and in a great mood. They're replaying the Superbowl on jumbotrons at the Art Museum (Rocky steps) and the fans are cheering like it was live. Police presence is heavy, but so far unneeded for more than keeping the barricades in place and shoeing some kids off of bus stop roofs. I don't expect any issues until after the actual parade when the drunk yahoos are trapped downtown and get bored.

Eagles fans were spreading ashes of loved ones at the Super Bowl parade
Others brought urns to take in the parade with them.

Bring it!

Bring it!
I'm more of a Penn State fan than a Giants fan. It will at least give me a reason to watch pro ball.
Happy for the kid.

Nice rings!
"World" Champions?
Just a pet peeve of mine
-
The rings look so much better when they're the first ones with only one diamond. I think they look kinda cluttered when they have like, say, six diamonds.
You're not alone about the World Champions nomenclature, I've run across several people that it bothers. I realize it's a north american sport, but my rationalization is name the other team in the world, outside of the NFL, that could beat the Eagles.
-
Beautiful rings!
Worn by the right team!
In my not so humble opinion! 8)

Hmmmmm? Wonder how many yards my man Saquan Barkley will run up that night :D

"Not so humble", in this case, means clearly biased.
And of course they're the right team --- their name is engraved right on the ring in plain view --- just like all 51 teams who preceded them.
This coming season will probably go to the Chargers. They are building a new stadium and Phil Lip Rivers has never won the big game. The team is greatly improved and Rivers is due for a Hall of Fame season. I suspect this will be it. Which NFC team will they be beating in February? Could it be the Curt Cousins led Vikes?

Yes, there's simply not another team in the entire world that would beat an NFL championship team - same goes for the NBA and NHL.

Yes, there's simply not another team in the entire world that would beat an NFL championship team...
Outside of Canada and the USA, who else plays the game? Football that is.
-
There's a number of club leagues throughout the world, any one of them is cordially invited to charter their own professional league and challenge the Super Bowl winner for world championship. Until that day, the Eagles are World Champions!
-
I see you guys left out baseball :D
"World" Series. Really?
The claim that the championship games were sponsored by "The World" newspaper is false

I submit that in order to make a claim like "world series" you need to host a tournament that includes the whole world --- like World Cup Soccer. Otherwise we come off as delusional about our prowess. While I agree that it is very unlikely any other team outside the U.S. could beat ANY NFL team, I submit that you can't even be sure the Eagles would win a rematch. After all, the games was decided by a mere 8 points. If Brady hadn't dropped that pass, there is every possibility that the outcome might have been reversed.
I'm not trying to take anything away from the Eagles, but they didn't dominate. You guys were biting your nails right up to the final few minutes --- admit it. As Bill Parcells told his players, "when you get in the end zone, act like you've been there before. Same goes for winning the Super Bowl , even if you haven't been there before.

A great and honest observation. :thumb:

Australia and Europe. There are leagues in several countries, the ones that I know of are in England, France, Spain and Germany. Yes, they are professional teams.

Having a close game doesn't invalidate the results, it makes it better. The paradigm would be a hard fought game between two great teams coming down to a pivotal play or two, I mean it is a spectator sport supported by the fans, you wouldn't want a blowout every championship game. No one sided victory is ever listed in the top ten games of any sport. Should the Patriots return their trophy for only beating the Eagles by three points in the previous super bowl they played in?
And none of that has the slightest bearing on world championships and whether any non NFL team, or non NBA, NHL, or MLB team, could even stay on the field/court/rink with our professional teams. I don't see any other countries demanding a playoff. And throughout the world players at the top of their sport come here to play, nobody says, "No thanks, I'd rather stay in Slovenia and play here". The Eagles are World Champions no matter how much anyone may rail against it.

By football I don't mean soccer, so if we're on the same page (and I think we are) that is really interesting. Since they call soccer football, what do they call what we claim is football?

American football.
-
Cool, I'll have to look into that.
-
Heck, while we're pouring on the hyperbole, why stop at World Champs? Who in the Milky Way Galaxy could beat them? Galactic Football Champs! I suppose that in many other sports when they have a "world championship" they actually invite other countries to play as well.
Apropos of nothing, it was cool to see Andrew Luck throw a TD pass! I care nothing at all for the Colts, couldn't name another player on the team, but clearly Luck is a talented fellow. It was sad to see such a young guy have his career derailed by injury, especially a fellow with as much potential as he has. Hopefully he's shaken off the issues with his shoulder (and psyche) and is ready to play this year.
