Title: AV123 - Onix Rocket RS850
Post by: vikesfan on 11 Jul 2023, 10:00 pm
Just scored on a pair of Rocket RS850's for only $300.  Cabinets are in pretty darn good shape with only 1 minor nick in the veneer.  Anyone suggest a crossover upgrade? I haven't had a chance to set them up in my home yet as they are darn big!  Looking for some options just in case though...

Nice  8) . The other day I was just thinking I should pull my ol 850's out and live with them for a bit .
I'm sure Danny or Hobbs will post something more definitive , but I do recall Danny reworking the crossover
for the 850's(and others from that series) back when av123 was still alive . It would seem the first step would be to
determine if your crossovers were updated to the "Signature" edition by the original owner with Danny's new boards .
And then go from there ?

If had Danny's upgrade from back when, it probably has Sonicap capacitors.  AV123 used cheaper ones.
I might be wrong, but I'd bet on it.

This is the old 850 crossover . They used the same board for both the 850 and 1000 .

That's the original crossover.  When I was teaching physics, they used to send me boxes of those caps and coils for my student speaker projects after they pulled them from speakers.  I've still probably got 50 pounds of them in storage.

They are the Signature Edition but not sure if that meant an upgraded crossover or not.  I'm going and try and get them hooked up this weekend but will probably pull a driver or 2 and look inside to see the crossover.

Thanks for all the information so far!

That one was one of the originals that measured really poorly. I then redesigned them and my crossover design was put into later production models.

I can provide all of the parts you'll need to point to point wire a new crossover that will transform them into a pretty good sounding speaker.

Just call or email us.

After doing some fairly critical listening to these it certainly appears that there is a significant lack of bass.  Perhaps failed crossover components?  Danny - could you send me a list of components required to upgrade the crossover?

The later versions of this model had a completely new crossover that I designed. It was MUCH better than the original.

So the first thing to do is see which crossover yours has.

Email me a picture of it.

I can't seem to get the drivers out of the speaker without damaging the veneer.  They are set very tight into the cabinet.  I removed the 4 screws from the base of the cabinet but that doesn't come off either. Anyone have suggestions on how to get the drivers out to see the crossover?

Yes, remove all the screws and use a pair of these hook tools inserted in the screw holes to pull the driver out:

Tyson - great idea.  It worked.

I pulled the loose ferrule (?) out from between the black wires.

That is the one that I designed. It produces a smooth response.

I would just upgrade the caps in the tweeter circuit to some Sonicaps, replace the wiring, and replace the binding posts with tube connectors.

Danny - I'm getting very little bass from either speaker.  I am going to pull the crossovers out and check components but any other ideas? Wired wrong?

I’d check all the drivers. Are they all firing ?  And yes check phase as well.  Those speakers have great bass.  Even when I had a super nice main system in an apt in SF I had those in my HT and loved them.

Crude drawing of how the 4 drivers are wired to the crossover

Your drawing is correct, but it sounds like you have a polarity flip somewhere if you have no bass.

I believe I bought a pair of abused RS 850's.  One of the tweeters isn't working and no bass on either speaker.  These are wonderful cabinets and I don't mind spending some money on crossover parts and drivers.  Any reason to not get these to replace the tweeters: https://www.parts-express.com/Peerless-XT25BG60-04-1-Dual-Ring-Radiator-Tweeter-264-1012?quantity=1

That is the same tweeter other than the one at PE is shielded. I think I have a pair of the tweeters left in stock that I can make you a deal on.

I also have all of the parts needed to upgrade the crossovers.

Danny, I have lost all sound above mid-range on both speakers.  Currently, I have the RS850 Signature crossovers you posted above.  Are there parts available to repair the crossovers or can I purchase a replacement crossover?

Check your connections.

Replacing any of the parts (if needed) is not a problem.
