Title: Show me your pride and joy -- your turntables!
Post by: woodsyi on 8 Apr 2019, 02:03 pm
I put in a new pickup and took some pictures.  As I sat down to play me some vinyl it occurred to be that my table spinning a red vinyl really looked good -- to me.  Like the experience of wine that stem not only from the sense of taste but also from visual and olfactory cues,  vinyl listening experience includes, in my opinion, visual component.

So, let's see some.

Mine from last night.

Here's what my main system looks like these days

The table on the left is the Opera LP-5 with the Dynavector 507 MkII tonearm. This table is set up to use MC carts.

The table on the right is a Merrill modified AR-ES-1. This one has the Audioquest tonearm. This table is set up to use MM carts.

And this is the table in our exercise room. It's a vintage Micro Seiki DQX-500 with the MA-707 tonearm. I just got it going and it's a pretty decent little table. Rock solid on speed with the quartz lock. I'm running an old Denon DL-110. It's a little forward but fun to listen to, especially with my old HH Scott driving everything.

...oh, my better half does the TV thing when working out. Me...I do the vinyl thing.

Thanks Mud!

It's been a lot of years in the making but I'm pretty well done. I use it for (mostly) passive listening as my music room doubles as my office for work. When I get the urge to actually listen', she delivers pretty darned well. I've had more refined systems but this one bridges the gap between detail and involvement really well. It's a pleasure to listen to.

The HH Scott and Micro Seiki is just seductive. It has this big, fat, round sound that simply sucks you in. Imaging, depth, placement and all the 'audiophile' things are just 'meh', but that system is way more fun to listen to. You know you aren't listening as an audiophile and that lets you truly enjoy the tunes. I've got a similar HH Scott system out in my garage that gets tons of play time also.

Dang, you guys have some pretty stuff!  Hi5 has more in his platform feet than I've got in my second table.

This is a Victor TT81 that I picked up and recapped, then bought router bits to make the base.  Arm is a Jelco 750 10" with a Sumiko Blackbird.
The main system has a Vyger Timor with a Dynavector 20xL.
(http://www.vyger.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/vyger-turntables-timor-5-400x300.jpg)  Mine has a Pioneer Exclusive P3 tonearm in a pod.

Oh, I'm not so sure ANY of us want to leave the price tag on our vinyl rigs for others to see! I think we all hear something in analog we are not willing to give up. I am thrilled to see so many vinyl crazies and D.I.Y. turntables. I guess there is still some passion left in analog.

You might be pretty well done, but you also done pretty well, Scott.  Fabulous setups.

Even I would start exercising if I had that Scott/Seiki in an exercise room.  Instead I'm practicing serious couch potatoing with my assuredly snoozer of a 1985 Yamaha P320/Shure and scratchy Hendrix lps or 45rpm doo wop.     I wish you were my neighbor!

Good cheer.

Scott, hope all is well!  I have been using the Fidelity Research arm for about 6 months now....I wanted to get a heavier mass arm and all the positive forum feedback on FR arms used with Koetsu Cartridges led me to search one out.  I have been floored with the improvement in my vinyl setup since adding it and the Einstein Audio Phono Preamp.   When your ready to move the Merrill let me know.....

Take care Scott,
Don

Yep, all is well. The house is pretty well done, finally. Looks like I'll have some free weekends coming up. I definitely want to make it over to give your system a listen, especially the table. I'm still jonesin' for a good rim drive.

If you find yourself out this way, ping me. You'll be amazed at how the house turned out. It's unrecognizable to what we had before.

Yes, yes they do. I still use a 1210 for my 78 system. It's a blast to listen to. The Dual is a bit hard to see in this pic but it sits on the Altec 824. I've got a black towel over it to protect the dust cover.

On the left is a Platine Verdier - ClearAudio TT2 - older VDH Colibri Stradivarius Signature which is table for anything vocal and small ensemble jazz.  All tube Aesthetix Io phonostage just brings out the best in all vocals, especially the sexy female voices.
On the right is Teres 255 with Verus Rim Drive - Graham Phantom 2 Supreme - Soundsmith Strain Gauge 400 which is what I go to listen to symphonies, large bands and rock'n'roll  It is very balanced, dynamic and throws a huge soundstage.

The ATP12 arm came with it.....its on till I finish my linear tracker,
(thats why theres so much table for the arm board)

Double plinth so I can move it....3 layers of 1" slate on top plinth,
2 layers on the bottom....Ill guess easily 200lbs total.
Paduack wood sides stained cherry........I really enjoyed building
and using this table.

I finished the new 'table project. Technics SP-10 MK II with a cast iron plinth, Pete Riggle 12.2" Woody tonearm and a "The Vessel" R3SM cart. This sits on top of a 3" thick granite surface plate, which is atop a concrete filled stand. I figure the whole stack is about 450lbs. I am overjoyed with the results. I am still undecided on repainting the plinth, it's an old base from a "Tallysurf 4" surface roughness measuring instrument and I rather like the industrial look. The cast iron was inspired by the OMA cast iron SP-10 plinth they offer and the fact that I inherited the base when a friend passed. I'll never play a record on this without thinking of my old pal.

Nice looking table Mike
I'd paint the plinth, everything else looks so nice it kind of detracts right now (IMHO)

Transcriptor Hydraulic Reference Turntable. This one was made by the original company likely around 1972-73 before it was licensed to J A Michell which continued to make this until 1977. I picked this one up back in early 2011. It was not meant to be a replacement for the Rega Planar 2 of which I was using then and bought it new back in 1997. I just like the look of it, an audio "objet d'art" But after I put it in my system especially after I got the SME 3009 II improved tonearm, later I added SME tonearm fluid damper also, I like it better than the Rega Planar 2. So it has been in my system since. Well, I still have the Planar 2 of which I will sell it soon since I don't really use it now.

This one is by no mean in mint condition. But it cleaned up nicely and spinning fine at 33 1/3 with great speed stability, pretty amazing after all this years. Although lately when I change to 45 it seem a bit slow. Not sure why since 33 1/3 is fine. I will have to look in to it. Perhaps time to change those resistors and caps in there. The motor still good but this is the biggest worry for me, I'm keeping my eyes for a replacement.

Anyway, those pics above where taken back in 2011. After 8 years of use I just gave it a good cleaning again last month, with new belt, new foam pads, oil and silicone fluid. And here's a video of it in action, click on the picture of the link next to it....

All I can say is WOW!  :o  I haven't owned a turntable in 32 years and decided to build a dedicated setup by starting with some well kept, reasonable used equipment (looking at a B&O 5913 to start).  By the looks of the systems in this forum, I have a ton to learn but excited about this new (old) hobby.  :thumb:

Yamaha did sell an accessory gun metal platter called YGT-1. It’s rarely for sale even in Japan. I have bidded on a few,  it always lost out. Eventually I contacted a metal fabricator and commissioned him to make one out of copper using my aluminum platter as a reference.

Just finishing a full frame off restoration of this original VPI HW-19.  I've really fallen for this table and one would be really surprised how well it performs.  I have a VPI Prime next to it with a Grado that's 13X more expensive than the Black 2 installed in the HW-19.  The law of diminishing returns really applies here.

I see that some of you here have 78rpm playback systems, I even noticed a few early acoustical machines here. Cool!  8)  So, here's mine to join the 78rpm club.

Here's my 1902 Victor Type E Talking Machine with Victor Exhibition Reproducer. I bought this machine back in 2007. It is a beautiful machine with original brass bell horn and pretty much all original, a great survivor. Although, about a year after I got it, one of the spring broke, it was a scary experience. Luckily there are still people around the US who specialized in fixing these machines. So, I got both springs replaced and the entire mechanical parts overhauled. So, this should last me another 100 years or so. I rebuilt the reproducer myself with parts bought from phonograph store on internet. It is a fun machine, every time I cranked it up, I'm always amazed by it that is actually work at all. Well, it is fun listening to acoustically recorded Caruso belting out an aria like "La Donna E Mobile" on this machine!

And since it is a Christmas Eve tonight, here's my machine playing 10" Victor 45145-B "Silent Night, Holy Night" performed by the Trinity Choir. From info I've gather, this disc was first released in 1917. Anyway, have a Merry Christmas and a great Holiday Season everyone.

I still remember this machine.  It delivers the performance unedited from such a long time ago.  With all the advance of technology, I guess modern equipment has technically edited most of this communication out with the performers.   :thumb:

Hey!

Yup, with the acoustical recording I think you can say that it is the ultimate direct-to-disc. Singer and musician literally sing and play through a horn and to the cutting head on wax master. Of course it is far from great sounding, but to hear Caruso belting out opera arias from this little machine is just mesmerizing.

Anyway, I just gave it a good cleaning and oiled the wood and took these pics of the inside...

Old fashion craftsmanship of wood, cast iron, and brass. The original label under the machine still intact. Although, stained and faded somewhat you can still see the date on the lower left bottom dated March 1, 1902. And look like it cost  8)$30 back in 1902.

Paul, I still crank it up and play it from time to time. And I do get a kick and smile our of it every time hearing sound from this machine. It is one of my prized possession. I've always wanted one for a long time, since I was a teenager when I saw one in an antique store here in NYC, I think that store is long gone, but I still remembered it. Of course if I had money and space I would love to have a bigger machine with big smooth wooden horn

It’s my first stab at a decent TT / phono setup..

Any recommendations on upgrades ,( arm, cables, cartridge, )

Or would it be better to just go after another brand (Kuzma, Sota, Technics)..?

Hey!

How I like to start my morning, nice cups of SME arms.

Well, not a complete table, but parts of it. SME 3009 S2 Improved and SME 3009 Series II. I picked up the Series II back in February, in near mint with original box and documents. Was updated by SME UK back in 1989 with new socket, rewired, RCA out and SME RCA cable.

Mine's pretty basic - a 16 year old VPI Aries Scout, stock with the exception of their antiskate weight system. It rests on a set of Black Diamond Racing carbon fiber pucks. Cartridge is currently an Ortofon 2M Bronze.
