BRYSTON AT 2019 AXPONA EXPO ROOM 440

Bryston will be exhibiting at the 2019 AXPONA expo and demonstrating a unique active system this year.

Bryston’s Gary Dayton will be using the extensive DSP engine in the SP4 preamp/processor to build a complex 3-way active speaker network. Loudspeakers will be the Bryston Mini T active driven by the brand new 21B3 amplifiers. Source will be the BDP-3 digital player featuring Qobuz playback.

Please join Gary Dayton in Room 440 for a Bryston demo and/or to discuss any Bryston products.

I like it, using the SP4 as a 2 channel pre is a statement. Were you happy with the show?

Yes it went well and the SP-4 has the ability to drive the speakers 'Active' as the DSP allows for active speaker curves.

Did you use the DAC in the SP4 or something else? Source?

They used the BDP-3 as the source and the DAC's in the SP-4.

Interesting, that really says a lot about the capability of the SP4. First that you can use it as both a reference two channel pre as well as a multi channel pre. Second, that the DAC's are reference quality. I know how revealing active speakers are and any short comings would have been under the magnifying glass. Congrats!

My hangup about getting an SP4 is no analog bypass. But, if the SP4 is on par with the BDA-3, then it wouldn't be such a concern initially. Can you give us some idea of how the SP4 compares to the BDA-3 through the SP3 on analog bypass? I just presumed the BDA-3 w/an analog bypass would sound better.

Hi Grit

The BDA-3 would still be the better choice for ultimate fidelity and flexibility.  The SP-4 operates at 48K/16BIT whereas the BDA-3 is capable of 192K/36BIT and DSD playback.

Gary:
Interested in the procedure you used to develop the active crossover in the SP4.
Entirely Dirac based x-over implementation and optimization OR  Import the existing BAX-1 filters directly into the SP4?

James:
Also curious in your opinions on Dirac room correction, now that you have had a lot more play time.

Hi Shawn

I am OK with DIRAC below 100Hz  but not a fan above that frequency unless absolutely required.

James,  Based on your past comments, I assume that's not a typo, but I thought I'd check anyway, in case things have changed.  --Mike

HA - thanks for catching that - I meant 100 Hz.
