Wow 8 pages and no mention of Phil Keaggy?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sTsHn9a9u1c

Dude, he is good but I would be careful playing that in my car because I might shut my eyes and drive off the road!  Just kidding, Kaeggy plays that type of music better than anyone.  Although my tastes have changed, anyone can appreciate his talent.   Thanks for sharing the link.

Top three Eh? Well, these are my top tasty three  :P

Ian Anderson (what? no flute?) get out your capos. Ian wrote and played some very tasty and creative acoustic material for Tull. :D Excellent paper on Anderson's acoustic work with Tull.
Youtube:
Mother Goose/Jack-A-Lynn
Thick as a Brick

Ronnie Montrose  :D :D
Song "One and a Half" off the Warner Bros. Presents... (Montrose) album (open D tuning I think)
(Sample here) click on green Preview button...

Steve Howe (amazing electric, pedal steel, and acoustic work). Yessongs is my favorite. Amazing guitar performances.

So cool how he holds everyone's attention in this video.

Wow, I just read through this whole thread and I'm going to try and be nice. First, the question was guitar PICKER. I keep seeing Mark Knopfler. He plays fingerstyle. While a superb guitar player, he is not a guitar picker. Next, if they play electric and work in rock, take them off your list. The best guitar pickers don't work in rock, they don't have to. Now that I probably have everyone at least offended, if not pissed off, let's talk guitar pickers. Doc Watson, Tony Rice, David Grier, and of course, Richard Thompson. While RT is known mostly as an electric guitarst, I have to include him because as sublime an electric guitarist as he is, he's better without the band. If you ever get a chance to see him solo, acoustic, go. You won't regret it. There are many excellent pickers out there. Roy Clark is another that has to be included in the first tier. Much as I love acoustic pickers, I REALLY love good fingerstyle players. That of course, would be another subject for another time. SRV? Steve Via? Please. If you have to include electric players, start and stop with Richard Thompson, Roy Buchannon and Danny Gatton.

Some others to consider....
Ray Kane, Sonny Chillingworth, and Cyril Pahinuie on the slack key.
Mother Maybel and "Coochie Coo" herself, Charo, for female pickers.
Jerry Douglass and Rob Ickes on the dobro (resonator guitar).
Lloyd Maines (Natalie's Dad) on the steel.

Good post Merle, but the original topic was a bit confusing.  Guitar pickers could be finger-pickers or flat pickers.  Also, they could be electric or acoustic.  They could also be jazz, country, rock, classical, etc.   The most enjoyable player I have come across in recent memory is Fretkillr on youtube.  It's funny but he's also getting a lot of mention on several guitar sites I frequent.  The guy plays Doc Watson better than Watson (not the vocal part but Fretkillr's vocal is also excellent) and his fingerstyle is equally good.  He's a mimic and probably can't compose original material like the great ones but his style is as enjoyable as anyone I have heard recently.  Check out this link for flat-pick style:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4h67Vsb6Ndc&mode=related&search=

This is a Fretkillr version of a Doc Watson song that I absolutely love, check it out:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=3pIoSkKOuvo&mode=related&search=

Lastly, although I have too many favorites to list, I still have not heard anyone (even the greats like knopfler, Thomson, Howe, Roy or Danny G, page) who can match Jimi Hendrix' viriuosity, but only on Jimi's live playing.  His standard recorded stuff was okay but it does not compare to his live playing.  IMO, I have never heard anyone come close to Jimi's ability to craft really cool and extremely listenable live solos.  He is so far above any electric player that it would be hard to name a good second place to jimi's throneThis is one of my favorites:

Merle's right about pointing out some real pickers as opposed to guitar players in general.  No mention of pickers can be complete without the amazing and nearly forgotten Clarence White.  Without him, would there be a Tony Rice, David Grier, or Albert (not Alvin) Lee? Richard Thompson and Leo Kottke are at the top of my list of living pickers.

I don't think anyone mentioned Al Dimeola, Andy Latimer (from Camel) or Shawn Phillips.

Andy Latimer is a name I've not heard in a long time. I've had the privilege of seeing him with Camel in the Paramount in Portland,Oregon back in the 70's. That man can flat out play. They warmed up for Wishbone Ash where I was able to see and hear another of the all time greats, Andy Powell. One of the best concerts I've ever been to.
The late John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) is another that belongs on any list of great guitarists as well as his bandmate Gary Duncan.
The best guitarist that I've heard from a purely technical standpoint would have to be Jimmy Bruno. Anyone interested in improving their chops should check out his website:
 http://www.jimmybruno.com/
A link to a Youtube video of Quicksilver and John Cippolina playing Fresh Air at the Fillmore West:

And a Youtube of Quicksilver's "The Fool" with Gary Duncan playing the intro and Cippolina taking over about halfway through:

This guy's name is Clive Carroll and I think he is one of the best pickers I've heard, though not in the bluegrass sense of "picker".

Really it's fingerstyle, but I figured if you liked pickin' you'd like this!

I recorded him last February:

check out Mississippi Blues at Vincenza (5th down) and the duet at Conegliano Veneto Italy March 06 (2nd down)

I am really surprised no one has mentioned

Nils Lofgren

He might be part of the E Street Band and write a lot of bad lyrics but the guy is better than most people mentioned in this thread. Watch videos of him on YouTube...

Also

Frank Zappa (musical genius)

Pretty much everyone else I like has been mentioned. I have no idea why no one talks about Nils the guy is fucking amazing. He just writes terrible lyrics most of the time...

I think this thread was basically for "pickers" not players but whow knows what type of guitar player he/she was looking for. But I do agree Nils could lay it down in his day. I have a couple albums of the guy: Back It Up!! Live... An Authorized Bootleg (1975) and Silver Lining (1991),,,, damn rightous stuff!  :thumb:

John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

Steve Morse (Guitar Player mag. Best All-Around 5 years straight = their Gallery of Greats)

Terry Kath (Chicago) Jimi Hendrix said that Kath was awesome and better than he was.
