Do you generally leave your amp(s) powered up?
« on: 22 Sep 2009, 12:16 am »
Reading about pops and clicks upon turning amps on and off, I have to report that I leave my 4B SST on all the time.  Any opinions on this practice as to sound quality and longevity of circuits?  I have always believed that things are best left thermally stable.

Thanks--I am just wondering what is wise, suggested practice with SS amps, and how about CD players?  I leave it on--it's not easy being green.....

Everything on 24/7 unless I'm away from home for extended periods.  Personally I believe thermal expansion/contraction of electronics from turning on/off is harder on stuff than leaving at a constant operating temperature.  Plus the system seems to sound thin when cold but that could be psychological too.

Everything off when not in use. I power them up usually about 2 hours before listening. I believe that we should not waste electricity for nothing but I also think everything sounds better after being powered up for a while and I have doubts it is psychological but who knows?

I rationalize the electricity use as offsetting my home heating natural gas consumption.   Theory doesn't work in summer but we have a lot more winter than summer here :)

I leave my family room system (11B & 3B) on unless going on vacation.  Same for my subwoofer amp (7B) in the HT.  I turn my SP1.7 and 9BST in the HT off at the end of each day.  Relative to power-up snap, crackle and pop; I get those with the 11B & 3B (regardless of which one I power down first) and some very slight pop with the 7B.  Nothing untoward with the SP1.7 & 9BST.

My secondary system uses a Bryston power amp and an AVA pre, both more than 35 years old. I always turn everything off when not in use. They still work exceedingly well.

I power it all down at the end of the day....probably for no real good reason except I hear little voices from the past saying things like....."shut the door you letting all the heat out"! or "turn out the light ...you think were made of money"! :)

OFF unless being used. :duh: Heat is the enemy of electronics.

Hi,

In commercial systems it is usual for ALL equipment to stay on 24/7/365.

This maintains a more constant operating temp.
Does not strain psus in the power up process.
Reduces power up / down time.
Systems are ready for action 24/7/365.

What it also means is that the systems maintain a constant tonal balance day to day, hour to hour......

I would love to leave my home systems on 24/7/365 but that really is not viable. Cost of running and the"Green" issue are things we should consider.

If I know I am going to have a music evening then I will leave the kit on from the morning. The house is a fairly constant temp so kit is warmed up by the evening.

One thing I do for ALL the amps is use the trigger system to fire them up / down. This then becomes part of the remote control system (Pronto). Most AV amps allow for trigger on systems. I think the PSU for the new Bryston Pre (26) has trigger options - I dont have one of those (YET )

Yeap...SS is always fired up, and ready to go. Fired up, ready to go.

The tubes are fired up when the music is ready to flow.

My carbon footprint is already minuscule...any smaller and I would not exist.

No.  I my current amplifier was built in the early 60's and runs class A.  Between heat and safety, I turn it on 10 minutes before listening to bring it up and that's all.

I left my 7B on 24/7 and my digital source.  I turned my Preamps to standby when not in use just to be safe no sound coming while I am away. :)

When I have my McIntosh tube monoblocks connected.  Definitely they get turned off when not in use.
