Batteries, Where to Start?
« on: 19 May 2013, 10:49 pm »
I will be receiving a nice M451 very soon from another AC member. I have always wanted to try one and have been intrigued about the batteries. I have read from most that they are a good investment and improve sound quality. There seems to be a few options from Virtue in kit form, but I really don't know what I need. Is there a thread that covers all the various options, pros and cons? I would be interested in the kit, DIY, used or other brands. I am confident you guys can guide me to lots of resources for this project.

I have the M-901 with all the goodies.
I have issues with the Dodd buffer in regards to sounds it makes when changing volume levels but otherwise this is a pristine amp. I didn't buy it because of the value per se though that is certainly there. I bought it for the quality so I wasn't concerned about making sure the ancillaries were top notch.

I never un-plug it as I don't notice it at all. I have 2 Interstate 12v 26ah batteries with the Dodd battery kit. (don't know if that's available but it's pretty basic). I have the GR Research TL N3s with all the upgrades as well and with a good recording the background with this combination is dead silent. This really makes albums with good dynamics especially .. special. A good example of a recording with nice dynamics and good emotional content is Dire Straights Private Investigations. The recording actually has a fairly high background noise, but this is the kind of recording that makes the the Virtue amp powered by batteries and heard through good speakers a real treat. Another killer tune with this kind of set-up is Vienna Teng: Gravity. Wicked.
