I'm thrilled to report I am going to be getting a pair of Song3's. After reading the positive reviews here and on AVS, seeing the gorgeous finishes and working with Jim, I am convinced this will be a lifetime purchase.
The WAF factor was extremely high as she was all in on the purchase. The fun part now will be choosing the finish. The console is rustic, the wood has grey, silver and tan tones, some of which are mimicked in the tile and paint. Some sort of black-ish baffle with contrasting sides and front are our initial thoughts.
I look forward to Jim's ideas.

A rustic finish would look neat. I dont think I've seen that on Salks or any other speaker for that matter. If you did decide on a rustic finish consider the top coat options. By that I mean glossy vs flat. With the rustic finish I would lean towards flat.
-
Boy, i can't wait for pics of these to show up! I think Jim will make sure you're satisfied. I'm a very happy owner!
-
Totally enjoying my Song3 "BEATs" . . . I can't imagine you'll be disappointed in your decision. Picking and obsessing over the finish is half the fun :thumb:
-
Here's a better pic of the finish on the wood. This is going to be a very fun challenge!
Don't know why the image went sideways, apologies.

Just a thought here, but can the face of the drawer come off? You could possibly send that to Jim so he has something in hand to accurately try to match. I'm sure he'll do it anyway but if he can have the actual finish to go by it might make it easier.
-
Another note to is that you might possible want to take a color from what's there and think about what would pair the best. There is some nice earth colors and grays in there. Stay on the same spectrum of colors either lighter or darker.
Enjoy.

That is a great idea, thanks! We will definitely do that.
-
Before dismantling your furniture, give Jim some credit to be able to match via a nice camera photo. He's done that many times. Talk to him.
-
just curious, where's your current speakers ?

Totally agree.

Ay yo, what if he wants to dismantle his furniture? He seems pretty excited about it and I'm excited for him! :green:
It was just a thought in case he couldn't produce an accurate picture of the color.
-
Well Jim has done some pretty accurate work just through photos before. Why make it easy on him?
-
just curious, where's your current speakers ?
No current speakers. Prior speakers did not travel in the move.
-
Jim is working with the pictures and has an idea based on a standard veneer. Excitement level is at 11.
-
It's a great little speaker. A tough choice between these and some of the nice bookshelf speakers.
-

Funny you say that because my quest started with looking at bookshelves, but one listening session with one brand of speakers quickly changed the direction to towers.
-
I have the Dark Walnut burst Song 3 and i am sure it will match your firnuture perfectly.
-
I am curious and excited to see what Jim will come up with. He recommended curly maple for the veneer.
-
I'm thinking about a pair just to have in the living room in some cool veneer because they are so kuhl. I'll have to call Jim to see what he has cooking for new stuff.
The nice thing is that the finish is great and the speakers sound even better than they look!
-
A finish has been selected, it should look amazing!
I can't wait to follow the progress now. I will probably check by the hour.

I certainly did when mine were being built...I checked so often that I'm surprised I didn't crash the server!

I placed my order 2 days ago! Decided to go with the Salk3 with the Accuton midrange in curly maple with silver gray dye. Can't wait!

Oh, that's going to look sharp! It was an online search for silver gray dyed veneer that started the whole process for me. I wasn't looking for speakers! Now I'm a proud owner of the song3s and i couldn't be happier!
-
Not sure why I am asking, but what is the lead time for a song3 right now?
-
I ordered the Song 3 with the Accuton mid around the middle of January. Delivery estimate was April, almost home. Can't wait, I almost picked the Smokey Silver, but fell in love with a deep orange fireburst on curly maple.

Nice to hear!! I've had Songtowers since 2011 and decided a few months ago to start "looking". At first, I was looking at the Veracity line then read all the great Song3 reviews. Really like the silver gray dye look!
-
Not sure why I am asking, but what is the lead time for a song3 right now?
I didn't ask but am estimating 6 weeks. Hope it won't be much longer than that. lol
-
mine took. around 12 weeks but it isworth the wait

Very happy with my Song 3

I know with most of the Salk speakers there are options with crossover components, bamboo cabinets, and in several models tweeters. I think there is a tweeter and midrange option with the Salk 3 or possibly Jim is working on a higher quality Salk 3 model. Can someone clarify this? It really is a very nice looking speaker.
-
Sorry. The above post is regarding the Song 3 not Salk 3.

You mean the HT3?
It might be ready for Axpona according to Jim. It should be wonderful. That's all I can say at my pay grade.
8)
-
Silver Gray / Pure is the combination we are getting on curly maple.
-
Nope not the HT3. The Song 3. I'm positive I read some where that a Beryllium tweeter and a different midrange was requested on somebody's Song 3s. Jim would know. I'm wondering how far these speakers can be taken. I know Jim is open to capacitor types. The Song 3s are so clean looking. I like the slender width. How close can these come to so called reference with a few changes?

Hi, I'm that somebody. Well, one of the somebodies. Not sure how many other pairs of this design Jim has made. My pair was the first. They are Song3's with the beryllium tweeter with a Audio Technology midrange. They're pretty darn good. Really good.
-
saygrr, here's a picture of them:

Thanks johzel. Now I know I'm not completely losing my mind. Do you live in Wi.? I'm in Racine county.

I do. Not all that far from you. You're more than welcome to come for a listen yourself. Return home with a car full of Spotted Cow and pay for the trip :thumb:

What are the odds of 2 members posting on the same thread to each other at the same time? Thanks for the photo johzel. Very nice. How long have you had them and what did they replace?

I've had them since late December. I had a pair of Silk AT's (Silks made with the Audio Technology driver). Liked those a great deal and wondered what using those drivers in a floorstander might be like. I asked if we could use them in a Song3 design and Jim suggested I consider using a beryllium tweeter with the AT midrange. These are the result.
-
I have always put my money into the other parts of the system so I cannot give an A-B answer that x speaker was made y better with upgraded crossover parts. I believe what the experts say and that it is subtle. Don't know a number to put on it. I would hope for 20% improvement myself.
What would the rest of your system be? I would always recommend a better dac or better cables - only based on me never having invested in crossover components.
-
Very happy with my Song 3

wow! Those look great

Song 3 Accuton's are no longer hidden gems, http://www.salksound.com/model.php?model=Song3-A . :D
-
Yes, they will be in Room 408 at Axpona with Schiit Audio.
-
Checked the status of my speakers and they are at 23%, Cabinets Glued Up. "All" that's left is the purtying up and the testing. Giggity.
-
I'm guessing a bunch of Song3 sales will be forthcoming after many folks remarked that 408 was the best sounding room at Axpona. Of course it will not win any official prize but folks were blown away by how good the system sounded (for the money).

I've been looking for reviews but have not found anything so far.
It's great to hear that Salk is getting more great word of ear.
-
Stereophile has a positive review of the room, which includes the Accutons, but it's focused on Schiit. Stereophile also loved the Exotica's, although half of the review is complaining about the rude people in the room yakking and taking up two center chairs. Update: Jim just wrote to say that the Stereophile reviewer was actually listening to the Song Encores and didn't realize it. Hopefully he'll edit the review. I was there on Saturday and was very happy with the way they sounded, even in the perfectly square listening room with the usual bass modes.
-
Thanks, Dennis. After reading those reviews, I was left wanting for Salk content.

HomeTheaterHiFi had some kind words about the Song3-A, http://hometheaterhifi.com/features/show-reports-film-festivals-concerts/axpona-2017-highlights/

34% done ...... ugh, the wait is excruciating.

Thanks for sending. A nice, albeit brief, review. The fire extinquisher on the floor in front of the rack is perhaps not the best comment on the merits of the amplification.

46% done, Sealer Coat 1 finished. woo hoo.

Curly maple with silver gray and pure stain. It will be a non-uniform finish.

How might the Song 3-A compare to supercharged Songtower?
Would these overpower a 100 sqft condo?

Jim is the best person to talk to about that. Call the number on Salk's website. Be careful though, I just called to order a tshirt.....next thing I know I'm purchasing Song3s.
-
The Salk circle has been rather quiet lately. So I'd thought I'd share that I placed my Song3-A order last Friday! :D I'm going with a white automotive finish. Not sure if it matters which one. I'm currently leaning towards Lexus Eminent White Pearl. Any comments on which white paint?
In the meantime, I'm trying to sell my HT3s.

I bet they'll be gorgeous! This is with the standard black grill?
-
White is nice!

You picked the right version in my opinion. I really liked the Raal and Accuton together in this unit.

Hmmm. Good question. I don't normally use my grills. But in the new place, I may need to. Perhaps I should ask Jim for white grills?

Glad you responded since I thought you had white Exoticas. Did you get a particular white paint?
I deliberated on what combination of tweeter (RAAL, Beryllium) and midrange (Accuton, Audio Technology, Eton, bamboo) to get. I also asked Jim. In the end, I decided on the Song3-A since I had heard it, the success Jim has had with the RAAL/Accuton combination in some of his other speakers, and it was a standard combination he already offered on his website.
-
Well I searched hard for a "white" metallic color. I learned from my wife how whites can be gray, green, yellow in tint. Ended up with Hyundai metallic white tri-coat after pouring through all the paint books at the local NAPA store. We used natural light and fluorescent to compare and contrast the whites until we found one that worked in both.
-
Congrats, Doug!
White should be stunning.

Final Assembly complete!!
All that's left is testing and inspection before they are off for home.
-
Woo hoo!
-
Testing complete!!!!
-
How long did it take for you between "Deposit" -> "Panels Cut"?
I have Song3s on order and am curious as to what to expect for project intervals.
-
I am not a good case because it took a bit to determine the finish. It added weeks to the process.
-
Pics from Jim! They're gorgeous, IMHO!!!

Very nice! Love the contrast with the drivers.
If you think they look good from the photos, they'll look ten times better in person. Enjoy!
-
Those turned out beautiful! Jim does amazing work!

Beautiful finish!!!
What does " pure stain" mean?
-
Beautiful finish!!!
What does " pure stain" mean?
I honestly don't know! It may have to do with the light stain that really highlights the maple.
-
Beautiful finish!!!
What does " pure stain" mean?
It is the name of the color as chosen by the manufacturer. We tested with two separate gray stains and two other stains to add color (corn and pure). It turned out that a combination of silver gray and pure came the closest to the look we were after. We also selectively used some black and orange aniline dyes in the topcoat as well.

Tomorrow is the day! Tomorrow is the day!

Got 'em.
Too busy listening to Jim's disk to report anything constructive. Wife and I are very, very happy.

Congrats! Enjoy! I'm pretty sure that I won't be shopping for speakers anytime soon!

Love the form factor of this 3 way. It just looks right.
And from ALL the pics I see of Jim's work, you will LOVE the finish in person!

This is so true. I absolutely love how they look: without the grills they look purposeful and elegant; with the grills they simply look elegant. I like how they look with the grills mor than I thought they would. Pics will come soon.
The finish Jim and his team came up with fits very well in our eclectic setting.

I was just thinking after reading all about the Song3 BEATS, that a similar version with a RAAL instead would be awesome.
Two questions emerge:
1. Would the AT mid "play nice" with the RAAL?
2. Would Mr. Salk risk producing a speaker that could become known as RAATS?
I bet it would sound amazing.
-

I had that exact combination in a pair of Silks . . . known now as the Silk AT's . . . and without a doubt, YES, they were amazing together. That was my first intention when purchasing the BEAT's but I decided to go with the beryllium tweeter instead. I have often wondered what the RAAL would have sounded like in this design.

Dear Audiophiles! :)
I am considering the Song3-A’s and have a few questions for prospective buyers and happy owners:
What drivers have you chosen for your speakers?
Has anyone auditioned the Song3-A’s at fairly low listening levels (say 65-75 dB) in a mid-field situation such as the listener at 7 to 8 feet from the speakers?
What distances from the side and back boundaries did you find optimal?
Would you consider PASS Labs XA30.5 amp adequate for driving the Song3-A’s?
Please chime in! :)
