Any thoughts on Modding or Tweaking the S2150
« on: 9 Dec 2007, 08:43 pm »
Hi all--

I have seen good words here for Anthony Padilla's power supply mods, but not much more.
I recently purchased an S2150 on EBay and am really liking it so far.

Upstream is a SlimDevices Transporter (stock) linked to the Tact with
a Van Den Hull Optocoupler MK II toslink, then going out through PS
Audio biwire speaker cable to Vandersteen 5A speakers. I have
eliminated the outboard crossovers for the Vandys with one implemented
in the 2150. The electronics are run on balanced power from a highly
tweaked Cinepro PowerPro 20 amp unit. The Tact is further isolated
from the Transporter by running it off a separate proprietary LongYu
unit (purchased in Hong Kong) that then plugs into the Cinepro. Power
cords are the JPS Labs The Digital AC for the Transporter and a
Harmonic Technology Pro AC-11 for the Tact.

In my findings so far, the Optocoupler (well-respected over on Audio
Asylum) outperformed coax as well as other toslink I had on hand. The
mix of power cords seemed optimal. The PS Audio cable performs better
than Cardas Quadlink biwire. Have not tried the Tact with "from the
wall AC" but for some reason doubt it would be an improvement.

Overall I like the sound of my 2150 but it would be nice to open up
and lend a bit more air to the sound esp. the top end, which does seem
to get congested at times. Just joined the Tact Hackers Yahoo group
and asked this question there, but no response yet. Am hoping there
might be some wisdom here I might tap regarding the following:

* What's the cost-effective 'progression' for upgrading the 2150
with commercial or DIY (internal) mods? I would be interested in
installing the mods myself as much as possible.
* What power conditioning, power cords, digital interconnect,
speaker cable or other tweaks are particularly synergistic with the 2150?

Thanks! -- Rob

When it comes to TacT  gear, nobody is better than Anthony.

What was the improvement replacing the passive external crossover with an electronic one in the 2150?

Hi George.  Very hard to tell, as the Vandy's crossovers are implemented at line level and sit between the source or preamp and the amp.  When I replaced the Quicksilver V4s with the Tact S2150 there was no "line", only a digital connection between the Transporter and the Tact, so I had no chance to A-B.  Theoretically, of course it should be cleaner.

FWIW, my Aberdeen modified TacT 2.2x sounded its best when plugged into a RSA Haley.
