I have the above mentioned amp running the stock tubes at the moment.  I'm about ready to start the journey into tube-rolling.  Any suggestions for the 5751?  As I understand it, this is the tube that will make the biggest sonic difference.  I'm using Grado SR-225's .  

A potential embarassing question:  What would be the effect of putting a 12ax7a tube in that slot.  I think that they are supposed to have higher "gain" Does this mean they simply play louder?  Any one tried a 12ax7a in this slot?

Hi --

I've tubed rolled a lot with the Ear+ Purist and yes, you can use a 12ax7/ecc83 with no problems.   It plays louder, as you say.
I've enjoyed many tubes in this amp, (I have Grado 325 cans) but my fave is a Telefunken ecc83, smooth plate, from a Grass EEG machine from the 1960s.   It might be my imagination, but this tube sounds very "transparent" and dynamic with lots of detail.   I also like the 7025 RCA tubes, and the German GAP/Computor 12ax7's.
You can also use 12ad7 tubes, 12ax7WA, etc...
