I own a BAT VK51se preamp and love the sound.  The stereophile review is spot on.  It is very dynamic, tremendous bass, slightly dark and not overly tube sounding.   The newer versions are more refined.

I preferred it over my Pass Labs X1 pre.  I am using the BAT with a Pass X250 amp.
