My pick for the Cup, again, is Argentina. :thumb:
There's some big games coming... :D
-
Italy not qualifying is pretty pathetic. The team must be sequestered on some island off of Naples.
What is happening to their program? :Played horribly in the last World Cup and now this?
Team USA? Unfortunately, they're not given the attention they deserved. Must be discouraging when most of the country doesn't even know you exist let alone not qualify.
Well, my two teams are out...er......never in

I think right now, they are being beaten up in Sicily.

Big big news on all fronts, on all former #1 and #2. Mexico beats Germany, Argentina ties with unknown Iceland. This is what the World Cup is all about, passion and a big dose of Fortuna at work. Brazil ties with the Swiss??? I mean the champs are either slacking or futbolistic level across the world has caught up with the world powers.
-
I find the WC pure entertainment - I am not even a casual fan of "the beautiful game".
Canada has not often fielded a team. Nor Ireland.
So I just tune in for the elimination rounds, and watch to see who the team that surprises folks and goes deeper than anticipated will be this time around. Cameroon back in the late 80's etc.
Don't get me wrong, I understand why people are passionate about it, but I cannot get past the diving and acting. It is foreign to me for the most part (though it is increasingly common in hockey and other sports).
The great goals amaze me, even though I cannot truly understand how hard it is to pull off!

Its just an attempt to make a minor infraction into a major penalty ( yellow or red card)
-
Yes - I understand their intent - I fail to understand why it seems (to the admitted outsider) to be so central to the game.
I refer to it as the "opera" within the sport. We all laugh about the magic water bottle/spray.

Like a lot of Americans I couldn't care less about the sport, but I do think are women are pretty good aren't they ?

Once you are subbed out, you are done for the day.
So after your "rest" time is up (player :argue: ref), better get after it.

Wow, Japan beats Columbia. :o

Wow, Japan beats Columbia. :o
Japan has come a long way. Colombia also. It has sort of become a fixture among many South American powerhouses. Brasil, Argentina and Uruguay are the perennial contenders, and once in a while Ecuador, Costa Rica but even Perú and also Panamá made the fray this year.
While many people in North America are not into it.... as someone who was raised on a steady diet of South American fútbol, every world cup is magical. Everyone in NYC is always parading in their national team jerseys. :thumb:

I grew up involved with American football. Soccer? Uh uh. I thought a 0-0 tie was 90 minutes of the most boring sports anyone could watch.
Then for some reason I started watching the Portland Timbers team...probably out of boredom for sports this time of year. (I think baseball ranked a close second on the Boring Sports List.)
Now? Now I think a 0-0 tie in soccer can be one of the most exciting 90 minutes of sports one can watch! Go figure. I got hooked. What a great game...artistic, athletic, strategic, and exciting!
Go Senegal.

I have a feeling that Mexico will win WC . So far they played best soccer .
-
Belgium hands down. Argentina won't make it out of group play.
-
Your right !!!
Croatia distroys them !!!
3-0
From the few minutes I saw , Argentina looked totally outplayed.
-
I have a feeling that Mexico will win WC .
I hope you're right! :thumb:

I think their next game is key. If they both play and well and win, I agree that would place them among the most likely contenders. Unfortunately Mexico, like England, have a long history of disappointment over expectations.

Gotta love the Japanese :thumb:

Nice win for Argentina to move forward. :thumb:

One thing I've learned from decades of World Cups is that the opening qualifying group games rarely provide a reliable indicator of the way teams play in the knock-out rounds. While it's been great to see Mexico and England do well, I suspect that the Germans and Brazilians will start to impress more. Argentina escaped a near-death experience too (and Maradona had one of his own too it seems after giving everyone the finger when that winning goal went in!) and meet France next. Neither of those last two impressed so far but one of them will be in the quarter finals, two games from the final. My heart will cheer Mexico and England but my head tells me the final winner will likely be one of the usuals..Best outside bet? Belgium....
-
I was rooting for Iceland, pity that they're already leaving. I'm not a big fan but it was fun to see unexpected outcomes in many games, kind of a shout out for all the teams to do their best every single game

Even as a guy that does not follow the sport, that goal by Messi was mesmerizing. What a beautiful couple of touches on the run and then fading off the shot. Wow!

'Twas a thing of beauty! But, without seeing any replays, he sure looked off-sides to me.

Germany is out! The biggest sensation of the cup so far ...
-
Commentator - "This will be the first time that Germany are knocked out of the group stage since 1938"
Other commentator - "And we know how the Germans reacted to that."
Officially the second most humiliating German retreat from Russia.
Seriously though, I am a big German football supporter (Bayern Munich for a club), but they deserved to loose. Out of the 3 games, the only half-way decent half was the 2nd half against Sweden when Kroos scored one of the best free kicks I've seen in a while. I will happily route for Mexico (rep' Concacaf), Croatia (my dark horse) or mildly Belgium & Colombia.
-
Agreed that they deserve the elimination as it was just a shadow of the team that won the world cup 4 years ago.
Hope that the second biggest sensation will be on Sunday when Russia beats Spain :D

Astute speculation. But considering that nearly everything else in the news is upside down, demonstrably false or indefensible, I'm able to absorb the hierarchical inversion of World Cup expectations rather easily. This too shall pass, Klaus. At least you have the comfort of disappointment. Most of us have never had a sniff of the trophy and cannot foresee a time when we might.

yeah that's what I like about them! they are normal people who love the game and can play well

Japan is in and Senegal is out because of the number of the yellow cards... Man, this world cup RULES!

I think I'm seeing how Russia will win the World Cup. They plan to reduce scoring by the opposition by knocking them down, tripping them, taking them out by any means necessary if they are in position to score. In the games I've seen, Russia cannot get called for fouls in the box. They intend to win the whole thing on penalty kicks.
In yesterday's game against Spain even the goal scored accidentally by Espana, the Spanish player was tackled on the goal line as the feed was headed his way. The score came from a ricochet off the Russian tackler's leg, making it an own goal. Spain never put a ball in the net. Expect shutouts from Russia henceforth. Their strategy seems to be to win it all on penalty kicks.
How do you suppose they manage to draw refs who look the other way?

I noticed that also. The last one was even reviewed. Spanish player was obviously pulled down.
Must be some sort of collusion going on between Russia and the refs

I guess I was watching a different game... Anyone who is familiar with Sergio Ramos&Co knows the quality of acting and diving they can demonstrate. They grab the shirt, they hug and then they go down as the ball is approaching. Glad that video review showed that and no faults on the defensive side.
Spain has not created enough chances, and De Gea did not stop at least 2 savable PKs.
Hope that Russia-Croatia game will be a better game to watch. After all, these are 2nd and 3rd most scoring teams of the cup so far.
-
It's looking like the real final will be France-Brazil. Whoever wins that will win the Cup in the next game.

true if Brazil can beat Belgium, which is a very balanced team this year
Unfortunately, the top 4 teams of the tournament ( Uruguay, France, Brazil and Belgium) are on the same side of the bracket. It gives a good chance for England or Croatia to make the final.
-
I didn't know that Uru and Belgium were that good.
-
This is an amazing chance for England to make a real impression....of course, their history suggests they'll mess it up but the gods of the draw have been kind to them. Spain's departure is giving everyone there optimism, so cue a disaster shortly, LOL.
-
Don’t know much about soccer, other than put the ball in the net, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the World Cup thus far. Japan/Belgium was just awesome right now. That last goal by Belgium was like an NBA fast break. Wish more teams played aggressive like these two just did.

Agreed! coming back from 2:0 was a pure class from the Belgians. Brazil will have tough time beating this team now.
-
Excellent game....Japan played well and made the Belgians really work for it - that last goal was some move, at first I was disappointed at missing the chance of extra time, did not want game to end. But this is why we love the game.
-
Japan deserved a better fate.
I fear the actual Final may be a letdown, given what's already transpired - France/Argentina, and today's Belgium debacle were superbly played. May it continue....
-
Today is pretty boring so far. Hope either England or Columbia steps up
-
England were ahead 1-0 until 3 minutes into stoppage time when Colombia tied it up. Into extra time we go!
-
England!!!!
-
England!!!!
I believe the boys were taking lessons from Shakespeare. ... Or Neymar. An out of control game, IMO.
-
It got a touch ugly...too much play acting, for sure.
-
If you haven't seen this play, or even if you can't stand soccer, check out this header-goal from Belgium yesterday. This will be on sports highlight reels for decades to come. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4NfyPeDcPU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4NfyPeDcPU)

Not enough touchdowns, I reckon. Or maybe not enough commercial breaks? No cheerleaders? Whatever was boring Art, escaped my notice. Large number of yellow cards and shots on goal, great goalkeeping on both sides. Admittedly it was only a very good game until Mina headed his goal in with mere seconds left on the clock - - - from that point forth, it was magnificent.

That was incredible. Even if it was intended to be a pass or setup I’m sure he told everybody “I totally meant that!”

It's heartening to see there are still gentlemanly sports where good manners count.

He did mean it. Check out the shot in this video. Start at about 15 seconds and watch him at 16 seconds. Just keep clicking that 15-second spot, over and over. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2ZToI-p8GA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2ZToI-p8GA)
It's a legitimate shot on goal. :o

what is a touchdown??
Anyway the first half of the England-Columbia game was as good as the Sweden-Switzerland game that took place earlier that day (and that is when i posted it)
Swe-Swi game should have ended zero-zero, and if the penalty kicks score were 0-0 it would not surprise me :D
Kane acted nicely to get the PK for England, and it was quite entertaining.
Now England is facing Sweden in 1/4 and that is going to be even more boring...
The blockbusters are coming up on Friday, though. Any of these two games should have been a final.

Brazil is out! What a game!

Brazil is out! What a game!
Great game, indeed! Now the western hemisphere has been completely eliminated. Of the remaining 6, Russia is the only team not in Europe. I was going to say, "in the EU" but then I remembered Brexit.
-
I am hoping for a first timer to win, so no France or England. I think that Belgium has what it takes to win this time. I am glad that I live in a city with a Telemundo station so that I can listen to excitable announcers. Slightly bummed that next weeks games aren't early because on pacifiac time one can watch the game or the first half and not miss much work.

Well, once each in '66 and '98. I'm good with any of the other teams winning the Cup, too.
-
Who else is glad that Brazil is out?? For some reason, I like it when the favorite is out, especially when they are the favorite often.

Stunning goalkeeping today during the France-Belgium game. These two guys are awesome-- gotta be the best goalies of the cup.

I like to see new teams win championships - though I am very partial to France (ancestory and have spent quite a bit of time there too.)
However, Brazilians are obsessed with soccer and given the often general mess of the country - it is one of the things that the down and out can celebrate whereas the better off countries do have much more going for the general public.

France deserved the win. Croatia outplayed them but the French played very smart except for the pass back to the goalie who thought he could dribble.
