What to check first ?
« on: 5 Jul 2016, 01:28 am »
:D. Hi everybody out there is the land of 33 1/3 .. A silly question here ,, but I really don't know. My digital is sounding better than my vinyl now and this just can't ve right. Is this a sign your cart is done or maybe the pre phono stage tubes if they have tubes ? I think my VAC Ren sig does ?  I don't know .  My table is the P9 and cart is X-2 Dyna-V.     I suspect the hours might be done on the tip. .
I can't afford to replace this costly cart and loved it.  Has there been gains in quality and a lowering price as in most other areas ?  Just wondering ?  Thanks air ,, wondering which way to go ?  :D

Soundsmith re-tips start at around $200. If you've determined the tubes are in good shape, I'd be looking at a re-tip from Soundsmith or The Needle Clinic.( Andy Kim) I think price range on either is in the $200-$400 range depending on stylus /cantilever choices.

That's a $17K (list) preanp.  For that kind of change, call a dealer and ask them. They should provide amazingly good service.  At the least, they should check your tubes.

WHAT??? For a glorified rubber band?  Find an aftermarket or a DIY.
After looking, it seems that they are available for around $60... still too high, but not silly expensive.

Your P9 deserves no less than this: http://www.musicdirect.com/p-11446-rega-reference-drive-belt-upgrade.aspx

I would also double-check the tracking force and the alignment. My Rega P25 preferred the Stevenson v.2 alignment from here: http://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtml
