Director David Lynch -- he of other truely bizarro and interesting films like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart -- is still alive.  Dunno about the writer.

If you haven't seen it yet check out Wild at Heart.  Somewhat similar and almost equally as mindblowing --   especially the Bobby Peru character played by Willem Dafoe.

I consider Wild At Heart my favorite/most coherent of Lynch's post-Blue Velvet movies (aside from A Straight Story which doesn't count cause it's, well, a straight story).

The rest are just too darn weird.

I absolutely hated Eraserhead.  Saw it in the late 70s as part of the midnight flix series at my college theater.
