My lovely Wife made me a Boston Cream Pie from scratch, except she did use a cake mix. She made the cream from scratch, and the gnash that is wonderfully cascading down the sides from scratch. Have a napkin ready because it will make you drool.

King Arthur Baking has a very nice recipe (https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/boston-cream-pie-recipe) that turns out great results. Re: your wife using a cake mix, King Arthur's version states in part, "Our updated recipe reflects most Americans' idea of this cake: based, in fact, on a boxed mix from the 1950s!"
