Grado Bowls vs. old 'Flat Pads'
« on: 27 Jun 2006, 07:22 pm »
Being an owner of Grado SR225's, I've always wanted to give the older 'flat pads' a try & compare them to the now stock 'bowl' pads.

Well, with my ears, I'd have to say I'm really disappointed with the flats. This was suprsising to me since most posts praise the flats as being the pad of choice for many Grado users. The flats remove much of the high frequency energy and detail and increase the bass - however the bass becomes boomy and muddy compared to the crisp highs and detail and tight, but perhaps leaner bass provided with the bowls.

Anyone else have a different conclusion?

NO, I agree with your assessment.  I think Grado's sound terrible with the flats.  No soundstage and bass is too boomy.

Well I don't have a pair of SR225's, but I did some A/B's with the bowls and flats with my RS-1's and I definitely prefer the flats.

Not only do they sound better IMO, they are a lot more comfortable.

Another vote from me for the Bowls. The flats to me sounded siginificantly worse on my 225s and HF1s, muddy is how I would describe them.
