Ali-Foreman 40th anniversary
« on: 2 Nov 2014, 04:06 am »
Was Thursday the 30th.
What a fight. For Ali to go in there against the most feared puncher in the sport at the time, with a fight plan that on paper was suicide, and make him beat himself. according to Norman Mailer, he heard Ali telling Foreman he was "not hitting hard enough to break popcorn."

I have a digitized version of the 20th anniversary broadcast on NBC with between-rounds commentary by both corners (Angelo Dundee and Ferdie Pacheco for Ali, Archie Moore and George Benton for Foreman, plus the ref, Zack Clayton). That is my favorite tape in my boxing collection. Who else has remembrances of this fight?

I remember the disbelief.  Ali was a controversial figure in those days, and many in the bigoted establishment questioned whether or not he was for real.  Foreman had lifted Frazier off the floor with an uppercut earlier that year.  To let the most feared puncher in boxing wail on your body until he wore himself out was such a bizarre strategy... amazing to this day.  Ali is still the greatest.
