Hi,

so you have all noticed the input on the back of LCD monitors/TV`s + some Plasmas =DVI. Digtial Visual interface. obviously this is not massively important for PC, when compared to VGA, DVI was cleaner and more stable at higher resolutions, also much less murky, but for average joes its nothing special. But where it gets interesting is in DVD. I have seen Some really nice pictures on laptops with direct feed to TFT screen.  But with the new arrival of HDMI(DVI) for DVD players to plasma  /LCD  compatible displays it sparks one major question for me and others who are considering a small high quality widscreen LCD or Plasma display .. you guessed it, simply:

Can i use the same connection from the back of my PC`s GFX card DVI into a HDMI made compatible DVI slot in screen without some kind of screen protection software kicking in?? and more importantly will HDMI compatible DVD players like Pioneers new 8series (with i-link + DVI/HDMI) plug into my non ratified DVI scoket on an LCD screen or plasma???  If not then this could mean people have a £2500-£6000 screen and a £850 state of the art DVD player and not be able to use the DVI on the back of my screen from the DVI port on the Pioneer!!!!
Just how many people have already bought these screens... ok i know i could save money buy a progscan 28" CRT with Component video.. but in all honesty i really do like the flat screen so much more. All major and minor(specialist) magazine article i have read suggest that using HDMI connection directly to plasma produces not just a mild improvment like stated earlier with VGA compared with DVI but a transformation of the very technology.. bringing PAL DVD to near as possible HD level of clarity on plasma.
Obviously you may suggest the £4500 42" pioneer with fully rattified HDMI connection.. but what if i want a solution now or next 6months? like a smallish widescreen 23" for LCD PC/GAMES/DVD/JPEG ?? at £1100 average cost and £1300 for 24" there is a massive cost difference.. where as the DVD player itself is not too expensive (soon to be introduced lower spec with same connection £650). I really do tire of using analogue connections for video and do not want to compound the misery further by having lip sync problems on plasma LCD.

Rant over.... for now !

I can't say for sure as I've not tried it yet. But I do think it's possible to run an HDMI into a standard DVI input. I'm pretty sure that the video portion of the HDMI cable is the same as the DVI cable. You've just got audio & copy protection on the HDMI as well as the video, while the DVI is only video.

Was just talking about DFP, DVI, & HDMI last week at the local shop. You'd think I could remember it better. Bad me...

The local shop hasn't gotten their new Pioneer DVDP's in yet. They've got the new Pioneer Plasmas though.

When they get in the HDMI player, I'll have to ask them about running it into a regular DVI input...

sounds good.. need some more info on that though.. because i know of very good cheap lcd screens with DVI in and if the pioneers + other brands are launched at buget prices like £400 (ok.. not exactly budget but theres a lot of technology in there) then i could get a system of the same quality ((which lets not forget, is meant to be MUCH more than just a little bit better than using analogue progressive)) for much less than the pioneer PDP and DVD then thats got to be a good thing for all.

Ok, haven't confirmed it in person, but this is something I just read off thedigitalbits.com

Pioneer is releasing the most highly anticipated new DVD player of the year, the DV-59AVi. This player features 14 Bit Video DACs, iLink (1394 Firewire) for DVD-Audio and SACD as well as an HDMI interface that will connect with any DVI-D input using a DVI-HDMI cable.

So it looks like you'll be fine getting the new AVi player and running it into any DVI capable display.
