OS 10.5 and OS 9?
« on: 2 Feb 2008, 01:53 pm »
Does the newest OS 10.5 support OS 9 running in the Classic mode?

If not, can OS 10.5 co-exist with OS 9 on an older MAC that can could boot from either OS9 "real" or OS 10.4?

I still have zillions of Pagemaker, Freehand, and Hypercard files necessary for my business that cannot cost effectively be transfered to any OS 10 program.

No 10.5 does not boot into OS 9 :nono:
Yes an older Mac dual boot Mac will coexist on a network with a newer 10.5 machine with the obvious limitations of the new features in 10.5 will not be available or compatible with the older machine. Pagemaker and freehand maybe able to be open in a newer program with a file conversion utility of some sort but I am not sure about  that and a hypercard stack as I understand them is certainly gonna require OS9. :duh:
Hope this helps Matt

We had a similar situation about two years ago when our legacy Mac OS9 program became orphaned and would not run on OSX. So, we ran 9 inside of X but little by little the Mac hardware base has abandoned X. So my medical office runs in X and we have a couple of separately networked computers running in 9.

I think your best bet is to have a separate box with 9 and slowly migrate to X. It may not be as hard as you think. I've been a Mac guy since 1988 and never used Windows on a daily basis, but I'll bet some of the newer Windows machines can't run Windows 95 and Vista at the same time!

Frank,

there is information on running emulation programs that would allow you to run 0S9 on an OSX machine at this link

Thanks for the help.  It certainly looks like my best bet for now is to continue to operate my couple of backup older iMacs that do boot OS9 native and hope they keep working for a long long time.

Keeping a legacy machine to run OS 9 is really the only feasible way to do it. The new machines are so fast & so cheap it is false economy not to just go out and get one (if you haven't already)

1st off, any machine capable of dual-boot into 9 and 10.5 is going to be barely adequate to really run 10.5 at the least. The last machine that would dual boot is only capable of supporting 2 GB RAM max and that is the minimum i'd recommend for Leopard.

I'll be getting a new Intel tower soon, and i'll just keep running 10/4 on my Dual 867 G4 (current machine) to access the 2 pieces of OS 9 software that i can't live without. I'll probably be firing up one of my even older Macs in OS 9 to run the old copy of Mac-the-Scope.

Thanx for that... it might lead me to a way to run 7.6 under X ... then i can start using Trapeze again.

System 7 came out about 1990 (7.1, 7.5 & 7.6 were significant upgrades). System 8 in 1997 IIRC (should be easy enuff to google an exact answer)
