Help me, I've killed my new Bryston!
« on: 24 Sep 2004, 12:10 am »
I have a month old 3B-SST which I adore. I was just down in the basement listening and thought, humm, this amp would look even better without the rack handles. Out comes the Allen wrench. I did not realize that the plates that run across the top and bottom of the face were not attached to the face. Once the bottom was off, I realized this. There is a ribbon attached to the touch sensitive power switch so I realized the handles had to be attached so the plates were in place. I put them back together and now the on/off switch doesn't work. I turned the amp off from the back but now I can't get it to turn back on. The ribbon wire seem's fine and is still attached to the touch screen. Please tell me I don't have to ship this to Canada! Help!

When I owned a 4B SST I wanted to replace the 19" faceplate (with handles) with a 17" faceplate (without handles).  PMC the UK Bryston distributor sent instructions with the new faceplate.  It is a straight forward procedure but I wouldn't want to do it without the instructions.

The power switch ribbon hasn't much give and you may have unseated it from the circuit board.  You should be able to clip it back in but contact Bryston first.

It does sound as if the 2-pin ribbon cable has become disconnected.  To reconnect it you’ll have to remove the top cover of the unit.  MAKE SURE THE POWER IS DISCONNECTED FIRST.  Once the cover is off, you’ll see the cable poking through the front panel assembly between the transformers.  There is a two-pin connector, facing the bottom, on the small board that the LED’s are soldered to.  Simply connect the ribbon cable to this connector, and you should be rolling.  If you wish to remove the handles, they should be removed one at a time, and shorter screws inserted to attach the top and bottom caps to the amp.  We can send you the proper screws if you want.

Well, you were right. The 2 -pin connector was disconnected. I pushed it back on the pins [heck of a time finding them!], put everything back together and...nothing. I will take it to my dealer on Monday. He said they will screw around with it and if they are unable to get it working, they will forward it on to Bryston service. For what it's worth, the membrain switch was rather touchy to start with. It seemed I would really have to push hard to get the amp to turn on or off. Bummer, I guess I'll have to start watching TV until I can get the amp repaired.

Fixed it! Went back downstairs, took the top off again and reseated the connector. Seem's to be working fine now. I've learned my lesson, leave well enough alone!
