I seem to be the only one. Is everyone waiting for me to finish be for deciding to jump in? I know these are brand new to the market but someone else must be an early adopter.
-
On the top of my to do list, but too much work just now.
-
I suspect that for now you are alone in the face of danger :P

I have my kit and orders for two more cabinets. They're next up when I finish the builds I'm working on.
-
I plan to! Hopefully by the end of the year, if not sooner. Hoping by then a flat-pack will also be available. If not, I'll do some digging to figure out what tools I'll need, or if someone I know has a workshop/tools I can borrow.
All I'll need after that is a subwoofer. I'll probably just mod/adapt the cheapo one I already own to suit my purposes for the time being since it'll just be stuck under a desk or turned down to avoid waking the roomates who sleep during the day. lol

I am waiting for the baffle to ship to start mine.

Hey Mike. Glad to hear you are planning to build some of these. Can't wait to see your idea for the over all look. Your work that I have seen so far is just spectacular! I am a finish carpenter/cabinet builder by trade but don't have the shop that you do. I mostly work on job sites these days. My partner who just retired had a nice shop that we used to use. He even has a Vacuum bag veneer press. I miss that shop.
I'm sure you will post photos when you have them ready. I'm hopping to have mine up and running this weekend.

dtschmitz001 did you just order the baffles by themselves as opposed to the complete kit?
-
I just ordered what I need to build the cabinets for now, the baffles and No-rez.
I did it this way to give myself an incentive to get the cabinets finished before I order the rest the rest of the build only will take a few hours. I am also building several other speakers cabinets at the same time, "X-Omnis" and custom cabinets for the Insignia Upgrade GR Research sells.

Wow! You are ambitious taking on so much at once. I am thinking of doing something similar with the servo subs, but will get the plans and build the H frames myself then order the kit after that.
I have not come across the X-omni's. Didn't see them on Danny's site.
Anyway have fun with your builds.

Trying to remember if the kit includes only the front baffle piece as far as the cabinet goes, correct?
-
Yes only the front baffle. See it here: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=168181.0 (https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=168181.0)

For now... we have some test baffles in the queue..... will see if a full kit is cost effective after the baffles are done

Sonicjoy, the X-Omnis are an old model that I came across in the archives that is no longer advertised. It uses the same drivers as the X-LS Encore, (different crossover), and it is supposed to sound better that the X-LS Encore by those who bought it. This was confirmed to me by Danny himself.
Apparently it never sold well because of how it looks, however I actually prefer it over conventional towers.

The X-Omni has never been on the website but it is available. Just call Danny

I have a pair of X-Omnis in storage. When I had a bigger living room I used them for surround speakers and they worked really well. I tried them as mains for a little while but then I got the X-Statiks which were a lot better. My only quibble with the omnis was they seemed a little thin in the mid-bass even despite being a ported design. To be fair, set-ups may not have been perfect but I feel like I never heard them at their best. I did always make sure to give them space. My room treatment could’ve been better.

Cool! Thanks for the info. I'm new to Danny's designs so it's fun learning a bit of the history.

Sonicjoy- I purchased a kit, but work's been running me over lately. Definitely enjoying seeing your progress though. :thumb:
I'm trying to decide how to finish the speakers... probably paint the baffle and veneer the sides. The kerf cut seems like the logical answer for the transition, but I don't own a table saw so still considering options. I paid a local woodworking store to cut the MDF. If my place had a large working area, I might have started spending lots of money in there. Who doesn't love a toy store!
Keep up the posts! I bet there are a ton of lurkers reading this thread.

Saving up for it! Looks like it'll be a project for summer vacation, though. Your pics of the build looks beautiful btw!

I know what you mean about work running you over. Hope you are planning to post your build.
I would strongly recommend you gain access to a good accurate table saw. There will be some minor fitting needed to get things to fit just right. Feel free to ask me questions in my build thread for tips where others may benefit from them.

Thanks for the comments! These are indeed very special speakers.

We shipped out quite a few of these lately.
I even sold out of baffles. More are being cut now. Hopefully I can pick some of them up tomorrow.
I have two more kits to get out.

Glad to hear it Danny! Hopefully some more build threads will start showing up soon.

The X-Omni is a great surround speaker. My son and I both use them in our theaters. He uses my old X-Statik’s up front and a Hsu sub. In 4.1 configuration. Crazy good for the money. Mine are in a higher end dedicated 7.1 theater. They are never the weak link back behind the seats. Here to stay :D
-
Cool! Glad you are enjoying them.

I wonder how the Studio Monitors would work with Wedgie triple 8 woofers. This would keep a narrow profile.

They would work well. Unfortunately, those drivers are no longer available. However, you can do the same thing with two of the 12" drivers.

I've built both triple 8s and dual 12s. I'd much rather have the dual 12s. IMO dual 12s in H-Frame cabinets have more output than when in wedge shaped cabinets. However, these cabinets were built to fit the Wedgies and as such are only about 5" across the front. If built to fit the Studio Monitors, the wedge cabs would be 8-1/2" across the front. This would make the rear opening considerably larger and might contribute to more output.

Those are beautiful subs Mike! Love the burl.
So I have been listening to the the Studio's with my Vandersteen 2wq subs for the last couple days. I have the subs placed just inboard of the speakers on the same plane. That is my preferred position in this room. This is proving to be a great combo! The Studio's having a box lower section blend very well with great box subs it turns out. I have not heard Danny's OB subs yet so I can't speak to that combo but I can say that they also blend excellently with good box subs so they should be very versatile in that regard. Now the Vandy subs are very good music subs! They use 3 down firing 8" drivers slot loaded in a sealed box and use adjustable high pass filters in front of the amps to roll off the lowest frequency's before they get to the main amp/ speakers. They get their signal from the speaker outs of the main amps. The subs internal amps have a matching curve that restores the lows to the sub drivers (that are rolled off by the filters). It's a great system that gives the subs the sonic signature of the main amps and make for excellent integration with the speakers.
This is sounding wonderful and has taken the Studios to a new level and allowed the mids and upper bass to be cleaner and smoother.
Very nice indeed!
