Nope, only for procrastinators like you who missed out on the show rate
No correlation between admission and Feb Florida room rates. No admission makes sense for a start up show, get as many folks there as possible.
The high rates are because 80 degree Feb days near white sand beaches, beats the heck out of the ice age weather elsewhere. I think parts of Niagara falls are freaking frozen right now..

It is always a gamble committing to a new show on the exhibitor end, but the seasonal timing, coupled with the region its located in and the fundamental need for a new show to shake things up led us to bite.

LampizatOr will have a heck of a room showing with Von Schweikert and Masterbuilt cables.

We'll be debuting our new Pacific (solid state) amplifier along with our Golden Gate 2 and Super Komputer.   Speakers will be the phenomenal Von Schweikert VR-55s with a Masterbuilt cable loom linking it all together. :thumb:

Looking forward to it.  Myself and a gentleman I met at AXPONA are sharing a 2 bedroom AirBnB, at less cost for 4 nights than one night at the hotel.  The hotel isn't the only option for accommodation.

Those are the new Type II Volti Rival loudspeakers. Same pricing structure as the original Type I. The Type II has more vintage look.

We’re using the BorderPatrol P21 EXD amp... let me attach the room equipment listing...

BobM,

Did you listen to these? I briefly listened to them at a dealers showroom in Portland, OR last year, and I was immediately struck by the bright treble on a couple songs. It's not what I had anticipated.
Title: Re: Florida Audio Expo

I listened briefly and probably will go back for another listen today. Rooms were crowded yesterday and didn’t get there on Friday.
Title: Re: Florida Audio Expo
Post by: TomS on 10 Feb 2019, 12:01 pm
I didn't hear brightness in the Paradigms, sounded very nice. They were doing demo's on/off of their Anthem room correction and it made a speaker that was too large for a small hotel room sound very respectable.
Title: Re: Florida Audio Expo
Post by: BobM on 10 Feb 2019, 03:39 pm
I posted pics of the rooms that I liked, in general. The Paradigms were sounding pretty good. So were the Triangle speakers. Of course, brightness could have something to do with the source and amplification equipment, or lack of room treatment. But in general, these all sounded just fine to my ears.

I had a demo of that Triangle system with vinyl, the entire system, all tubes, less than $20k, which is rare for these sort of show setups. It was the biggest surprise to me, really sounded good, smooth, well integrated, just a pleasure to listen to. Mikey Fremer was sitting in front of me playing some of his "secret sauce" vinyl, so perhaps that helped as well. I liked it a lot.

Agreed. I vote this one of the best shows I've attended. While smaller than the other biggies, the quality of the systems was right up there with the best of them, and the sound frankly was way above average. It turns out the venue had something to do with this! I'll leave it to one of the founders of the event to explain. Kudos to the team behind this exceptional event premier!  :thumb:

The place was originally a condominium. Not too may hotels with washer/dryer outlets in kitchen
As such, pretty solid, well insulated from each other rooms. Decent size too. Quite a few comments about that. Yes, part of why the venue was chosen, along with location, etc.
Thanks to all who came, the turnout, buzz, coverage etc exceeded expectations. Also surprising(?) was the amount of youthful and female faces.
Heavy local presence also, 99% who had never been to (nor likely to travel across country for) an audio fest.

cheers,

AJ

Why is the cost of the room so much more than any other embassy suites?
Title: Re: Florida Audio Expo
Post by: Phil A on 3 Feb 2020, 08:32 pm
Why is the cost of the room so much more than any other embassy suites?

Room rates are dependent on the area and what's going on around the area (activities that would impact demand).  For example, when I went on my initial trip to FL (almost 8 years back) to look around from up North, I left after lunch and stayed at a Red Roof Inn in Savannah, GA.  Couldn't understand why the room rate was so high (the Red Roof Inn about 70 miles south of that was more than $100 less).  Found out when I got there that the next day was St. Patrick's Day and they had a big parade (so I got out of there early).  It's about supply and demand.  That's why room rates in warm US climates tend to be less or more during certain seasons or similar situations in other areas of the US (e.g. I'm sure there is more tourists in Alaska during the summer vs. the winter).

Florida: no vaccine mandates, no vaccine passports, no mask mandates, and still fewer cases than NY which has all those.

Love seeing videos from the shows.  Only chance I ever get to listen to mega buck audio systems as I live in a rural area.

"Florida: no vaccine mandates, no vaccine passports, no mask mandates, and still fewer cases than NY which has all those."

That situation is changing fast. Miami-Dade area's case count is now just as high as NYC's. Hopefully this latest wave of infection will peak and plummet as fast in the USA as it did in South Africa.
Title: Re: Florida Audio Expo
Post by: dminches on 31 Dec 2021, 11:30 pm
I am not going to comment on the policy of mandates, etc. since it is too divisive a topic but comparing Florida to NY is apples and oranges.

Almost half the people in NY live in 1 city.  Let's put $8 million people in a city 40% of the size of Jacksonville and see how that works out.

Shannon and I will be driving down in the morning from Chattanooga and should be at the show when the doors open Friday morning.  I am keen to hear the Muraudio SP1 and also the Perlisten speakers.  We were really looking forward to seeing Clayton and the hearing the Spatials  (X3, X4 or X5) there but unfortunately he pulled out.

The Perlisten appeals to me because of all the great reviews and measurements but honestly I am not as excited about box speakers on this next system.

I know there are a lot of rooms and we surely will not see/hear everything.  So, if you guys find a streaming integrated that is worth checking out please post up here so we can try to get by that room.  I have a fantasy of a 1 box system that gets the job done.  Maybe something will be released that outperforms the NAD M33, Anthem or some others in that range.  In talking to the guys at Muraudio, the SP1 is a pretty tough load and the Lyngdorf 3400 is probably not capable of driving them.  I know it would be no problem on the Spatial X3 though.

Cheers,
James

The hotel, State of Florida and event, no COVID protocols other than to stay home if you feel ill.  But also says certain spaces, vendors may have mask requirements  and suggest attendees bring a mask to have access to all spaces.

Disney has ended mask requirements, infections are dropping quickly, seems like things are finally moving toward the end of this mess

AJ and the organizers did a really nice job, at least from an attendee perspective. It's a huge task for what is a local club. The kinda old school Embassy Suites 2 room suites worked pretty well for audio. It was good to see a few familiar faces, though the typical AudioCircle manufacturers went largely unrepresented this time (Spatial, Salk, Odyssey, Modwright, Daedalus, Bryston ...) other than Soundfield (AJ), TWL (Pete) and LampizatOr (Fred). I also took in the Pat Metheny Side Eye tour concert in Clearwater Sunday night, which was a fantastic way to end the weekend.

The un-assuming looking Acora speakers in the large Westshore ballroom sounded amazing with a J. Sikora Standard Max TT/Integrity HiFi Tru-Glider tone arm/DS Audio Grand Master optical cartridge as the front end.

Hmm, no, he doesn't have a circle, just a frequent poster here, "friend of the show" as it were. He demo'd 2 fully active speakers, including his flagship, which sounded very good. They are very versatile, permitting use in just about any room configuration, totally adjustable through the XO on the fly (e.g. wide/narrow pattern).

Hah, sorry Tom, I typo'd you as "Bob" S  :duh:
I am 1/4 partner of Flexpo, as well as a Suncoast Audiophile Society member. And those aren't my flagship, the much large 1812s are. Figured the 1212s at show were "big enough" for that room.
Yes, both speakers were fully active, user configurable (via remote) variable directivity, cardioid bass designs. Which meant zero percent of attendees had any idea what I was talking about.  :)
Thanks again for stopping by, always good to see you gents. Maybe next time crazy man Jerry has a meet at his new audio extravaganza warehouse, you and Jason can pop in again. Overall, we're pleased with what unfolded, given the circumstances. Attendance was solid. Good feedback from exhibitors too. Just wish it wasn't 85! AC got a workout.

I thought it was abbreviated as FLAX? Pretty much every audio show has the Audio letter in the name, like NYAS, CAF, RMAF (RIP). Without the A it could be mistaken for the polymers conference, or the digital company, or the employee finding initiative for flexible work organizations.

Those are some nice components in that room.  It looks like a VAC Statement Phono pre under the turntable and a VAC Statement line stage below the reel-to-reel.  The 452iQ’s look and must sound fantastic too.

They were using the DS Audio Grand Master phono equalizer with their matching optical cartridge. The VAC phono and Grado cart were not playing well together. Half a mil+ in there.

Yes, both speakers were fully active, user configurable (via remote) variable directivity, cardioid bass designs. Which meant zero percent of attendees had any idea what I was talking about.  :)

My highlight of the show was sitting in your room while a very well known speaker "designer" is asking you how you integrate the woofers and didn't understand at all when you started explaining that you measure it using a microphone.  Absolutely, completely. 100% clueless.  It was EPIC!  TomS and I laughed about it for a while.

Room 1015 again (like last year). A new active mid size floorstander (somewhere between last years small/big models) with variable directivity/cardioid bass and a passive planar OB with active cardioid bass.
Neither on website, yet.
Going?

cheers,

AJ

Correction, I'll be in Room 1215 this year. Hopefully everyone starts on 14th FL via elevator, then walks down stairs at end of each floor.
I will also have some passive speakers in the Orchard Audio room 506.
See ya all soon.

AJ,

I’d like to hear your newest speakers, but I’m just a wee bit too far away to make it. Any chance you’ll show at the PAF in SeaTac this summer?

Enjoyed my time this weekend. even if I didn't totally get to sit in every room and listen... only got in 2-3hrs on Saturday and 2hrs on Sunday.

These were by far my favorite sounding rooms. I know it's hard to get ideal sound, but these imparticularly impressed me

Great show. Surprised at the turnout, particularly Saturday, lots of full rooms. Hotel staff seemed stressed at points but we had no real issues to speak of. Enjoyed the breakfast and happy hours. I met some interesting folks and made a couple new contacts.

Another surprise was the Aesthetix room. Beautifully crafted gear, rich, textured sound.

Volti/ Border Patrol/ Triode Wire room was in line with my taste. Great guys too.

This was my blue ribbon room. The Joseph Audio room had just gorgeous sound, well balanced and simple.

Also went to 7th avenue, Ybor City. Lots of cigar joints and Cuban cuisine. We ate at the Columbian while enjoying the clogging and dancing style from Flamenco dancers. I would recommend to anyone reading this to give it a try next year.

This past weekend makes it my 4th year going to this event. Every year, it gets bigger and better. This year was no different.

The really cool thing about this year's show is that I got to meet and talk to OCD Mikey! He met my three brothers as well. We chatted for a few minutes, then went on our way. A few hours later, we meet again, this time my brothers and I were coming out of a room and Mike was heading in with a few friends. The music they were playing wasn't the best, both music wise and recording quality wise. I told Mike to go in there and "school" them on good sound and music! LOL

I have to say, Mike is a really, really nice, cool guy. He's just like he is on YouTube! Cool, direct, tells it how it is, doesn't BS around.

Here's a few pics of the show on Saturday. I should have asked to take a pic with Mike, but I just didn't think about it at the time. Oh well, maybe next year!

AJ's Soundfield Titans were the highlight of the show for me. There are 12 x 12" OB woofers in EACH tower. 8 planar drivers, 1 horn firing up, 1 horn firing to the back. DSP XO and all the needed amps are built-in, $22k all in. Amazing sound in a small room.

I helped out in the Unique Home Audio room all weekend. We were showing the Dutch & Dutch 8c's with Theoretica Applied Physics' BACCH SP ADIO processor. It was packed after hours for individual demo's of the BACCH, bringing lot's of "Wow!" comments :-)

The Clarisys Auditorium's with 6(!) VAC 300's tri-amped playing Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do", followed by Queen Live, on vinyl, was absolutely spectacular, stunning really, even after hearing it hundreds of times over the years. Normally I don't pay much attention to the megabuck displays, but this one was special for sure.
