BCD-3 gain
« on: 7 Sep 2017, 02:07 pm »
James, I was wondering if the gain on the new BCD-3 is adjustable as it is on the BCD-1 via the BR-2 remote.I prefer the sound with my Bp-25p set at 29db in balanced mode.

I am not sure - I will ask.

Hi

I checked and it is not currently possible - would require a software change.

Whoa!!! How do I adjust gain from BR2?
Have had BCD-1 and BR2 for 6 yrs now, and never knew about this.... :duh: :duh:

BR-2 remote codes:  250-0db
                               251-1db
                               252-2db
                               253-3db

    Not a big change.                  Cheers

Apparently you haven't read the BCD-1 Owner's Manual in 6 years! (page 3)  ;)

Those codes were only mentioned in regards to the BDA-1.

Music makes me dyslexic

@sweetspot: thanks for the codes -- I agree, probably little diff with such small dB changes. The 14B2 amp has a 6-dB change -- 23 or 29 dB gain. Very nice.  :thumb:

I should point out this feature is not a gain adjustment. It is in fact a digital bit truncation that was implemented because the Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC chip used in BCD-1 and BDA-1 has a higher output voltage than usual. In case your preamplifier has a problem with it, you can reduce the output level by 3 dB. This is an inherent feature of the CS4398 as a matter of fact. I think the datasheet stated it allows for a -60 dB level reduction but Bryston might have limited it to -3 dB to preserve audio integrity.

I don't think there would be a noticeable drop in performance  if you reduced the level by 3 dB but I would still rather use the volume control on the preamplifier.

This is also the reason why BDA-1 has a higher SNR than BDA-2. It is also the reason why CS4398 is favored among tube enthusiasts as it is a voltage output DAC rather than a current one.

Cheers!
