Title: New Build - Ghent Stereo case
Post by: NachoTime on 24 Mar 2015, 04:41 am
Ghent Audio recently began offering a stereo NCore case kit - http://ghentaudio.com/kit/ncore-se.html (http://ghentaudio.com/kit/ncore-se.html)

The sharp looking case and a strong US dollar has prompted me to take the plunge in to NCore-land.  Looks to me like the NC400 modules are rather tightly packed in this configuration and am wondering what you think of this layout:

I'm a bit concerned about the following:

* AC lines passing over and somewhat close to the NCore module
* NC400 power input loom passing between/underneath the modules
* Close proximity of the modules to power supply

Is there any cause for concern here, or additional shielding you'd recommend?
Would a copper divider between the amps and PS be overkill?
Bonus question - Can NAMPon be wired to the power switch?

For reference, I'll be using Cardas litz wire based on some comments I've read in this circle.  Here's what is on order:

Input - 2 x 20.5 shielded pair (Cardas Crosslink 1i)
AC - 2 x 15.5 twisted pair
Output - 2 x 11.5 twisted pair

Also ordered an 'el cheapo', $40 solder pot off of Amazon which will hopefully be up to the task of burning enamel and tinning the litz wire.  I'll be sure to report back how that endeavor works out.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

Aluminum would suffice for a divider. Copper is better in shielding which is a bit different.

Ahhh, good point.  I'm more interested in the shielding aspect and whether it's even warranted in this case.

I have a slightly longer (deeper) version of it to support dual SMPS600 if I want to replace the SMPS1200 with the dual. Ghent is happy to support me with that (with small additional cost).
nAMPON and nFATAL are connected to the SMPS1200.
Here a picture of it.

Please comment.

Do you feel that any shielding is needed here?

I realize it's a bit of can of worms with the different possibilities and merits.  I've read up a bit on ERS cloth, foil tape, and copper dividers...   Just not sure whether it's an issue that even needs to be addressed.

Thanks for replying.

I unfortunately can't make out all the connections in your photo.  Could you clarify which specific pins / locations the NAMPON and NFATAL leads are connect to?  I thought NAMPON needed to be grounded or routed through a switch in order to mute.

I'm also curious which SMPS1200 (A400??) J5 pins you used for the LED switch?  I believe I it was 3 and 5 in either orientation.

I do plan on reviewing the proper assembly method in the coming week.  Would be great if you could help clarify things as it appears you have the identical setup.

Thanks!

Yes I use a SMPS1200A400 to supply both nc400s.

nAmpon  connects to J4.6
nFatal (green J7.5) connects to J4.10
Led connects to J4.1 and J4.3

Green (J4.10) connects to nFatal (green - both nc400s)
Black (J4.6) connects to nAmpon (black - both nc400s)

Red (J4.1) and White (J4.3) connects to LED

Why does Pin1 of XLR go to chassis?

Why does Pin1 of XLR go to chassis?

Ground/earth connection.

But why is that necessary?

But why is that necessary?

To ground any interference induced into the cable shield (and to equalize the ground potentials).
