Hi, and what about this!?

Hi!

I've been coming back to this place through the years whenever my audiophile inner monster wakes up from hibernation. This time I thought it best to finally become a member!

Short about me; my dad was a vocal coach at the community music school here in Sweden, so my life early consisted of influences from his records: Al Jarreau, Chicago, Tower of Power, Dave Matthews Band, Genesis, Sting... I played the bass from the age of 6 (and still do) so bass is a big part of how I like music. Today I enjoy music through my hard earned Meze Empyrean headphones (eq'd after Oratory1990's settings), worth every penny. The joy they give me has brought me closer and closer to the edge of going for the big leap of getting really good speakers as well.

So, for the "what about this" part:

Getting deeper into the research I've looked at stuff like Buchardt s400/a10, KLH Model 3/5, Klipsch the fives, Mission 700, etc, etc... But I sadly come to the conclusion that my budget (sub $2,000 inkl amp, etc) won't cover the quality I need to be satisfied, if I were to go to the store. So that leaves me with building it myself (which is a fun thing being an aspiring hobby-woodworker). It has also brought me to the open baffle arena.

I have come to some kind of conclusion that my desire is to build something like the Closer Acoustic OGY + BOB (or maybe PureAudioProject Duet15), but in a smaller form (important due to wife acceptance), because of smaller budget... I'm thinking components from GR-research, but design more like OGY+BOB. But not closed ported box like OGY but open, like a narrow version of the BOB with similar measurements as OGY:

What do you think about it?!?

What components should I look for, and who can help me? GR?
The sub has proven itself, but what about the top? What are your thoughts about the design? Should it be opened up more, a bit like the NX-Otica? It would be nice with a bit of coherent design with the sub though.

So, hi, and thanks for being such a kick-ass community!

Regards
Jonas

Hi, there are a lot of choices for drivers available, see this list: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=149613.0

There are some published designs at this link, you may want to consider following one of them: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=149608.0

The wings will create a resonance, it may not matter for the lower driver but it will likely be a problem for the upper. You will need to be able to do acoustic measurements anyway (if not following exactly a published design) so you can try it and measure it.

Early B.

With your budget, stick with an existing DIY speaker design.

Hi BassLind,

I think you are on the right track with some mods.
Check out ABX https://abxaudiophiles.org/, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgDdjVPODgI
First you want to get drivers that are designed for OB and Slot Loading.
Your wings should be 14" from the front of the baffle panel to the back of the wing. You can add a bottom plate if you want.
The drivers should be mounted to the back of the baffle.
Incorperating the slot loading to the design increases the Bass output (drivers must be designed for slot loading) Is the Sub on? It just works below 40hz but most of the time I cant tell if its on.

I get massive and very impactful bass with this setup.

PM Me if you want.
