Receiver $900 or so, best for large theater
« on: 24 Jul 2006, 05:58 pm »
I just had a thunderstorm zap my Denon 3801 to oblivian , and am in the market for a receiver. I am looking at:
B&K 307
Rotel 1065
Arcam 200-300
Marantz 9200
Boston Acoustic 7120
Denon 4806
All are used, hence the $900-1000 price range.
I only use the center and surround channels for power. Want the best quality sound, features not a big issue. 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 are all good in my room, no need for higher. Running component video only.
Any suggestions or comparisons welcome.

Harman Kardon avr 645 wouldn't be a bad idea either.  7.1 x 75/ch, DD, DTS, USB for ipod, HDMI video switching, Furoudja video upconversion and multiroom.

PS. Don't let the 75 watt per channel fool you, would probably out-drive alot of the AVR's on the market.

Good Luck

All due respect to Harman Kardon,

Their failure rate is appalling, 100% of the HK product I have originally installed in the last 2 years has had to be replaced.
HK need a new cheif engineer and stop worrying about their cosmetics and make serious audio products again.

Like Cambridge Audio does now...  infact let me ordain today Cambridge Audio as the HK of the past.  The same HK that made the AVR-80 etc.   :thumb:

and the B&K and Arcam are likely the two best sounding receivers...actually they 're definitely the best on your list for sound.

AV123 has the EMO UL PreAmp and Amplifier combo for ~$1000.

Not too many bells and whistles, but great sound quality.

Happy with mine.

I don't have a set, but these are what I would get if I were looking in the 1k range.  30 day trial to boot.

The room is 33 x 15 x 8 in size.
The EMO stuff looks interesting.
I will have to look at the ebay auction referenced.
The Denon and Boston (Sherwood clone) have the auto-setup and room EQ, which seem to simplify the process, and video upscaling for composite and s-video, cool.
Seems like consideration for quality and features that bring other qualities is what is in order :thumb:.
Thanks guys,    Z
