Excellent Neils-Henning album, it's a damn shame I couldn't find any samples. :duh:

Thanks to Border's 50% off sale I picked up these gems:

Cecilia Bartoli - Maria (Decca '07)
If you can get past the fact that Cecilia is (apparently) no Maria (I certainly can), this is a wonderful CD. Don't let the scathing critics steer you away from this fun recording.

Benjamin Britten / English Chamber Orchestra - J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concertos 1-6 (London '69),
also includes Neville Marriner / Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields - Concerto for Violin and Concerto for Flute and Strings.
Modern instruments? Yeah. So? These CDs are a real treat. Wonderful, full, satisfying sound.

Mikhail Pletnev - Domenico Scarlatti: Keyboard Sonatas (Virgin '01)
Superb! Sweet, melodic, and vibrant performances.

Mstislav Rostropovich / Carlo Maria Giulini / London Philharmonic Orchestra - Dvorak & Saint-Saens: Cello Concertos (EMI '08)
Slav - beautiful, as expected.

The Beatles - Let It Be (EMI '87)
This was one I've ruminated over for years ... do I get the original, Naked, or Anthology 3? I decided on the original based on the fact that this is what I had on vinyl and so fondly remember and have hungered for ever since I dumped my vinyl 15 years ago :duh: :duh: :duh:. I am glad I got the original. I didn't realize how much I've missed it!

I've been listening to each of these.  Below are my first (and some second) impressions.
Otis Redding - The Very Best of Otis Redding  // Hard to argue here.  Not all songs are great but there are some gems.
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs  // Excellent!
Mark Kozelek - What's Next to the Moon  // haven't listened yet
Niyaz - Nine Heavens  // excellent but then I've heard this prior.
Portis Head - Third  // wasn't impressed thus far.
Kings of Leon - Only by the Night  // really impressed.  I had written off KOL thinking the singer sucked, this doesn't get on my nerves and the music writing is excellent
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast  // Really liked it
Ryan Adam - Cardinology  // sounded pretty decent what I finished hearing.
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion  // don't get this one on first listen, but then I didn't get into Strawberry Jam on first listen either
M. Ward - Hold Time //  a let down...sounds like a rip off of his other albums...to much of the same sound, bored me.

To appreciate "Third", listen to a lot of Alban Berg, Ligetti, and Bartok.

"Third" gets more interesting upon further listening.
Kings of Leon - There's something simple and nice there, I like it.  "Only by The Night" is real pleasing and just easy to sink into, likely the one to push these guys further into the spotlight.  I've played the New Kings of Leon disc about 10x more than the new U2 disc. Even Deathcab for Cutie's "Narrow Stairs" is outplaying U2.  "I Will Possess Your Heart" is just infectious.  I did give U2 a good listen last night with a better appreciation for it.

Agreed. By the fourth or fifth listen, you'll be craving this spooky stuff.

Tragically Hip - We Are The Same

I haven't been keeping up with The Hip and haven't picked up any albums since Phantom Power, so I don't know how this compares to the more recent releases. It's not as strong an album as Phantom Power, or most of their albums up to that point. It is a good and fairly solid album, no real misses. Yet only a few songs really make you sit up and notice, like 'Morning Moon', 'Coffee Girl' (which is reminiscent of 'Thompson Girl' from Phantom Power), and my personal favorite 'Love is a First'.

They are touring the States this summer, if you've never seen them live I highly recommend it. They are a stellar live band.

DeerHunter - MicroCastle/Weird Era Cont.
I am not really sure about this one yet.  But, I will give it more time.

A.C. Newman - Get Guilty
Not as good as "The Slow Wonder" or his work with the Pornos, but it's still decent.

Neil Young - Sugar Mountain Live '68
I am not feeling the same way about this as I did with Massey Hall, but it is still a cool document of Young.

Antony & the Johnsons - The Crying Light
Beautiful stuff and pretty well recorded.  I am enjoying it very much.  If you are a sucker for vocalists, check it out, or 2005's "I am a Bird Now".

The National - Boxer (LP)
I am enjoying this one a lot.

I just ordered a ton of stuff from Amazon, so I will post more soon. :D

Interesting day went into the store to just put my money down for the new Steve Earle "Townes" album. Pre-ordering gets you a bracelet to a Steve Earle in store the Friday after the album comes out, seemed like a no-brainer :)

Anyway since like any of you I can't just walk into a record store and walk back out without browsing I headed to the bins. I picked up the Whiskeytown and Magnolia Electric Co record store day 7". Then I found two pretty interesting titles

1. A sealed copy of "A.P. Carter's Clinch Mountain Ballads" for much less than this ebay listing,
http://cgi.ebay.com/A.P.-Carter%27s-Clinch-Mountain-Ballads--the-Carter-Famil_W0QQitemZ260400469447QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090427?IMSfp=TL090427132001r38127

It's on Mountain Eagle Records which I think is a revival of sorts of an older label that was more contemporary to A.P. Carter.

As a bit of a nerd for old country and bluegrass music I thought this was a really cool find. I'm not even sure I own any other sealed records.

2. As a baseball fan and, most importantly, a Cardinals fan I had to get this ;D  (note: not a photo of my copy, mine is in much better condition)

It's in vg+ shape, even has a near mint copy of the poster that originally came with it. I found a little info on the interwebs about it today,
http://wayoutjunk.blogspot.com/2007/06/stan-mans-hit-record-to-help-you-be-big.html

Quote
This was a record from 1963 that you could get from your local Phillips 66 gas station, from a time when gas stations wanted your business so bad that they would give you free gifts if you patronized them! Learn through Stan "The Man" Musial (and co-host Joe Garagiola) techniques on how to improve your batting skills. This record also came with a booklet that further illustrated these techniques, and I have included that in a separate download if you're interested in it. It hasn't improved my batting in Wii Sports Baseball, but maybe it'll work for you in a more practical setting! Hope you like it!

I have a similar baseball related LP in my collection that I had to pick up because it seemed really odd and cool.

Went back home to Hawaii last month and got turned on to this:

SDIB (San Diego Island Boyz) - SDIB

Nothing inventive, revolutionary or thoughtful but if you've been to the islands before it will certainly bring back the positive vibes.  Reggae, hawaiian, pop and folk all mashed up.  If you like Iz you'll probably dig this too all this is more reggae and less hawaiian.
