The OXO used as a stand should be filled with something dense: kitty litter, sand, lead shot, etc. .  There is a heavy brace down the middle of the cabinet so you will have to use small bags of something.  Don't pour loose material into the stand when used as an OXO as dust and particles can pollute the crossover.

Just thought I'd use this thread to wish all AC'ers a Happy Thanksgiving.

I have invited John Curl over for turkey and mince pie.  Of course he'll have to bring his own...

How do the Jrs. compare sonically to the 626R's? Are they just as good?

How do the Jrs. compare sonically to the 626R's? Are they just as good?

The 626 jr's are essentially a Standard, or entry level 626R, with one very nice upgrade, and that is the SR71 package which normally costs $150.

So the 626R can have a "range" of sonic signature, depending on how you build it.

Megawoofers, FST tweeters, cap upgrades, and even the new OXO, can all add to that signature.

But to answer your question, the 626 jr, will be even better than the "entry" level due to the SR-71.

And I might mention that all 626R's now come with the CDWG and so does the 626 jr.

Considering what the waveguides do I'd think the 626jrs would sound better than the standard entry level 626 by a significant margin. 180 degrees of even dispersion should help quite a bit.

When I first saw this post I must admit I had been a bit shocked.  For a grand you have simply amazingly good sounding speakers. I've only heard the standard 626R's in my room and have been quite surprised at what they're capable of top to bottom. With the waveguides and SR 71 treatment for less money by several hundred dollars this is no less than a phenomenal buy, period.

The OXO used as a stand should be filled with something dense: kitty litter, sand, lead shot, etc.

Another possibility is to use nails.  This was a trick the guy at the lamp store taught me.  Sand and kitty litter tend to be a real mess.  Lead shot is expensive and there's the possibility of getting lead dust in the house, which is not good if you have kids

Early B:

The 626Jr performs at a level slightly below the standard 626 with its new 40oz woven carbon fiber Megawoofer.  We rate the F3 of the 626 Jr at 42Hz, vs 37Hz on the standard model.  I have made the Megawoofer a $200 option on the Jr., at which point it is indeed identical to the standard version.

Good suggestion, and again, whatever is used it needs to be placed in the cabinet in bags, and not in "loose" form.

I've got an idea, instead of adding the CDWG to my year old 626's for $300 plus $100 shipping, I'll sell them now why I can still get $400 for them and then buy the $1500 RM 30 juniors with CDWG when they come out!

How big of a difference is there between the spiral tweeter and the ribbon tweeter?

The spiral ribbon is a direct-drive planar with about 80mg of moving mass.  The FST is a transformer operated true ribbon with 13 mg of moving mass.  Both sound very good but the nod in purity and speed goes to the FST.

I bought a pair of the standard 626 Jr's for use as my back surround speakers and have been using them as mains until I get another pair with the mega woofers and FST for my actual mains later this month. I must say that both Brian and John were a great deal of help in doing research on these speakers and as well during the purchasing process. Both very classy (and helpful) guys and I would encourage anyone who is interested in these speakers to contact them.

BTW, The sound quality of the base model is superb. I have auditioned many speakers from many price points, some below the normal cost of these speakers and some well above. These speakers are a screaming deal for the money. The midrange is simply amazing in it's texture and clarity. Also, don't be put off by the spiral tweeter if some of you can't afford the FST then don't worry about it...the spiral tweeter truly is a very good sounding driver. I can't wait to do a A/B comparison of it with the FST models I'll be getting next.

The spiral ribbon is an "EMIT" type tweeter, indeed we used to buy them with the EMIT logo imprinted on them.

It is not a Focal tweeter.

That is correct the 626 Jr. does not use a Focal tweeter. I have updated my previous post to reflect that I never intended to imply that it did. However, my VMPS Dipole surrounds do...shame you don't make them anymore. They were good sounding (Not so) little speakers.

The Dipole Surround is still in production, $349ea for the stock version and $599 for the SE with Megawoofer and Focal T90 dome.

I assumed that production ceased because they are not listed on your website anymore. They are fantastic little speakers and more people should buy them in my opinion. Just because they are not the bigger models does not mean that your getting shortchanged.

They would make a great entry level home theater if you could find a way to package them in fours with a sub and then design a matching center all for say $2000.00

I'll ask Dubravko to reinstate the Dipole Surrounds on the new site.  Some of the old site's 93 pages were cut to make the new site more navigatable.
