That has more to do with EQ and implementation.

I'm sure that has some bearing.  The dispersion pattern also may play a part.

In general, I just find them too hot for my tastes.  YMMV.

I've heard hot ribbons too, so I know where you are coming from. I used to feel the same way, but I know better now.

Only ribbons I've ever heard are the Aurum Cantus in my Vaughn Triodes.   Not hot at all.   Smooth as silk.

The Aurum Cantus, Fountek, LCY and RAAL ribbons are anything but hot when sensitivity is properly matched to the other drivers.  In fact, the most common complaint is that they are too "polite" or "laid back" when compared to users' previous experience with dome tweeters.

After acclimating to the "new" sound, the realization sets in that they more likely accurately portray high frequencies when compared to domes or dome implementations that "sizzle".

I've heard virtually all of them sound pretty good as well as pretty bad.

Except Heil AMT's. Those always seem very bright to say the least. I don't count "Whizzers" as an actual tweeter.

Wrong! Sound Lab electrostatic panels. Full range

Yes, I agree. I was not thinking full range electrostats in my comments but typical dynamic full range drivers.
