Sennheiser which ones to get
« on: 30 Dec 2019, 08:13 pm »
Hi new here just received my smsl m500 dac which is fantastic btw on stereo it really opened up spi stage and clarified serial of my existing system.  I bought it for that purpose but also wanted head phone jack.

So question is should I get hd 600 or hd 660s at the moment price is very similar for me headphone output is 66mw at 300ohms so worried it may not have enough headroom for hd600 also reviews seem to favour hd660 but not all???

Best advice, go and listen to them with your own music and equipment that is the only way to truly know. Never  trust any review or anyone take them all with a pinch of salt, only trust your own ears.

Comparing their frequency responses, the HD600 is the more forward-sounding headphone. The 660s is the replacement for the HD650, so more balanced on the low end. If you have to pick one I would choose the 660s. Better yet, the HD6XX from Massdrop for $200.

Thanks guys.

Think I am going with 660s. In my situation the price difference between the 600 and 660 will be 12%more for 660s. Also sounds like 600 are more finicky with amp selection

Enjoy the 660s. I just finished re-reading Catch-22.

I’m in the same boat, sure makes it tough. But I’m not in a hurry though and chances are I’ll be heading into a major city in 2020 where I hope to hear a good variety options. However in the meantime it can be frustrating especially when I see a good deal on used HPs.

I have owned the HD650s for a long time; I've compared with the 600 and 6xx at some headphone meets.
The 6xx and 650 are nearly identical and personally I prefer the 650/6xx over the 600s but I have friends that prefer the 600s

Buy the 6xx's is my suggestion you won't be disappointed and you'll appreciate the savings (to spend on something else!).

Bottlehead Crack pairs beautifully with both.

All,

I don’t understand the previous response that you can’t listen to headphones you want to buy...

Music Direct sells a variety of headphones and they offer a 60 day return policy.  A number of other web stores are now following suit by offering various return policies...

Is there some reason that you do not want try one of these stores?

Yossarian,

Ah!  Now I understand...

In that case, if you like the sound of Sennehiser, then it can be more straight forward.  I think that the "Sennheiser sound" is very logical and progressive as you move up the line.  I went from a 500 series, to a 600, to the 800 series over the years.   Each step was better - clearer, better sound.  Each level was a very good headphone for the money and shared a lot of the same qualities.

I would suggest to look around for the model you can afford now and purchase them.  Then, move up over time.  What I also like about Sennheiser headphones is that they retain their value as a used item and they are well known - so, they are easy to sell.

Best of luck, CHRIS
