Title: PUGET SOUND AUDIO GROUP???
Post by: Sonny on 17 Mar 2016, 10:15 pm
Hey there all,

I have just recently moved back up to the PNW, Gig Harbor, WA., about 42 miles Southwest of Seattle from Oakland, and wanted to see if there are enough members here to make something happen.

I know it's a big area with Vancouver BC to the North and Portland to the South, however, that may be a stretch, 3-4 hours from BC and 2-3 hours from Portland.

So, is there enough interests for a PUGET SOUND AUDIO GROUP???

Let's take a pole!

I am almost 2 hours south of Portland and I am would consider making a trip north.   If nothing else I need would end up at Lou's shop to the north of you.

And it would be my guess that with the population base surrounding you that a DAC shoot out would be spectacular.  And that is not to mention  the pub crawl before or after :thumb:

Hey Tuan, good to hear you are settling in. Screw the rain I don't melt, but the traffic sucks. Don't know how regularly I'd be able to brave the horde, but I'd be up for it every now & then. Particularly in summer & fall. Due to aging eyesight, and the total lack of anything resembling standardized headlight alignment any more I rarely do any night driving. Oh for the days of the Cibie Z beam, designed to light the road without blinding oncoming drivers. Anyway, I know there's a number of area locals here at AC, but time will tell what can be pulled together.

I'll keep an eye on the thread, keep us posted.  :thumb:

Hello, Tuan.

If I'm home (not wandering Taiwan or N. America), I'd be interested. Aldcoll and I are practically neighbors, so we could potentially drive up together.

Keep us posted for dates and such.

Guys (Michael, JD and Aldcoll),

Thanks for the message and interests.  Yes, we should plan on this spring, how does that sound for you guys?  Let's pick some dates, perhaps in Mid-Late April / May?  Weekends?  Saturday vs Sunday?

Let me know what works and if you'd like to host or not.

I'm a bit North of you in Port Townsend. I might be interested in attending a get together.

Tuan, at that time of this spring I hope to be recovering from back surgery. I will be hosting a GTG at my house on April 16 :thumb:

So as I understand it long drives will be off my list for maybe a year.  But then again I have avoided some for a while.  So in the not to far future I will be in the area as a trip to Ferndale has been on the list for years.

But keep me posted I will show up and you might just regret it :slap:

I live at the North end of Lake WA. just No. of Seattle and would really enjoy meeting some people in the area to share this hobby with.

I actually built an audio room/guest house earlier this year which is a dedicated space people are more than welcome to use.

Hi Tuan,

JakeJ here checking in from Eastern Washington!  I'd be interested, I have a sister in West Seattle I can camp out at if needed.  Recently acquired a Metrum Acoustics HEX DAC that is easily transportable.  Or I can make some great food!

Besides I have to come over soon and pick up that X350.5!  Well before spring!

Greetings and salutations from the desert,
Jake

I would be happy to host, it looks like I'm somewhat centrally located although we are all over the map so to speak. The weekend of the 14th wouldn't work and of course Thanksgiving is out but otherwise I'm open. Like I said I have a new separate building that my audio gear is set up in, has a full kitchen and bath. I'm working on room treatments but don't have any yet. I would also need to get some more seating in the space, just a couch now.

Jakej, I have a metrum octave that I currently use so it would be fun to compare that to your Hex.

If you guys think another location is better for most people that's great just let everyone know what you think.

So do they setup a system at the KWC?  If not then what happens at a meeting?  Just discussion?  If they do setup a system seems like a bit of a pain.  Or maybe build one out of equipment brought by members.  That would be interesting, a stereo potluck.

Yes Jake, the 350.5 is waiting for you, but it's holding down the house!

Cool!  No, wait, hot!  Well, in the event of a flood your house won't float away.

Would love to compare the two Metrum products.

Jake, you will have to come and help me with the Pass!  It's definitely a BEAST!  All 138 lbs of it!

I am game for a HTG !  Can we all confirm?  Let's do a poll on who can and can't make it!

Greg are you still offering to host?

I'm happy to have whomever would like to come. My building is 20'x30'x10' and dedicated to audio. Any days work except for the above mentioned.

Current equipment: Joule Electra 150 MK11-SE Preamp (tube), Butler Audio 2250 (hybrid) amp or (class D) Crown xls1500, 2012 mac mini using Audirvana, Metrum Octave dac, Pure i20 ipad/iphone doc, Sinxter USB/SPDIF converter and GR Research Super V's (open baffle).

You are all welcome to bring whatever you would like and it is easy to swap gear in and out. For me that would be a lot of fun and I look forward to meeting some of the people that share the same passion that I do.

Wow! Cool beans, MCA.  Definitely would love to hear the LIO and the DeHavillands.

Perhaps in a future gathering I could be talked into bringing the VAC gear.  Sorry, not hauling the PMC EB1i's over, you wanna hear those you'll have to make the trip.  :D

Hi all,

Looks like we have a few people that can make it. Let me know what Oct. 22nd looks like for everyone, it's a Sat. which I would think works better for people who are driving a ways. We could probably start earlier in the day for those people as well.

MCA and HCB, if you would like to bring some of your gear over that would be great! That goes for anyone else too, it's always fun to listen to different equipment. HCB, it looks like you will finally get to hear those Super V's. I think you just bought some OB speakers? You'll have to give your comparisons to the rest of us.

Jakej, we can figure out some food for everyone, I like to cook as well so we can come up with a menu of sorts.

Tuan, thank you for making the effort to get people together around here. I have been meaning to do just that for a few months now but just didn't get to it.

Really looking forward to meeting some of you, it's good to put faces to the people we communicate with on this board.

I'm over in Port Townsend but presently having car problems so my attendance could be a problem. Maybe next time. :(
I do have some gear which I would have liked to hear in the context of another system.(Mhdt DAC, Tortuga LDR passive pre.,Modded Heathkit tube monoblocks) Greg, I'd love to hear your Super V's too.

Hi Roy,

We can do this again for sure, sorry your'e having car problems I hate when that happens. I have a MHDT Havana but don't have it at this house. I could bring it home for next time if that's what you have.

I was on the same tour you were with the original Tortuga and just didn't like it with my Butler 2250 amp. I think you have a newer one now so it would be fun to try again.

I would also like to hear all the tube amps I can, that is really what I want to get "I think" but guess I'll figure that out down the road.

I just noticed I said my pre amp and not the amp I was using at the time, probably a bit confusing :scratch:

Hey jakej,

Really glad you can make it. I was hoping I might get a little more feedback on whether people can come or not on that day. Let's wait a couple of days and see who chimes in. I'm open regarding time and just want to make sure a few people can show up.

O.K. guys, I'm sure you have to check in with the other half but it would be good to get a count on who can come. If it's only jake j that's fine but it seemed like several of you were interested. Sonny, HCB, mca?

We can always do another day and in fact, I plan on doing these every once in awhile anyway. But let's see if this day can work or Sunday of that weekend if that's better.

If you can't make it let me know that too and we'll figure out another day...

Thanks Guys,

Greg

I agree with Greg, if a different date is better for greater attendance then great!  My schedule is flexible but that relies on lead time.  Speak up, do we need to move this to the 29th or Nov. 5th?  I get the impression any later date will not work for many as the holiday season starts getting into full swing.  Speaking of that it's likely that I'll be in the Puget Sound area over the post-Christmas to pre-New Years period and so could attend a weekday G2G.

Hi Sonny,

Glad you can make it, I don't have my vinyl rig set up right now so that's off the table (no pun intended). You are welcome to bring any cables you like. I have long speaker cables and RCAs to my amps which are next to my speakers. It's a good 20' for both to the far speaker and amp. I use banana plugs but can also use spades with both my amps.

Greg, thanks for the info.  What cable are you using from source to pre and how ong is that?

Greg, thanks for the info.  What cable are you using from source to pre and how ong is that?

Hi Sonny,

I know you make cables but the truth is I have not been convinced "yet" they make much of a difference. I use Mogami star quad cables for my interconnects and my speaker cables. The cables from my source to pre are probably about 2' and my cables from my pre to midrange/tweeter amp is probably 3' or so. Like I said the amps for my 12" servo subs on the super v's are about 25' away along with my speakers cables.

I would really like to here a difference and I believe my system is very revealing but I just have not been able to with my limited tries of changing cables.

Hey Tuan,

Sometimes writing back and forth just sucks for getting your thoughts and meaning across. I didn't think you were coming across pushy at all and certainly didn't mean to portray that.  I would really like to try your cables in my system as I have never given any cables a fair shake. For me being a somewhat technical guy it's hard to grasp how cables could make any real difference in sound. But I'm totally open to hearing yours in my system and I welcome you bringing them.

Hi Jake,

I very much appreciate your concern, however I have owned an alarm company for over 30 years. I am not afraid of anyone even getting close to my house and my neighbor is a local policeman and is first on my list. Plus, to be honest he is really crazy. Also, I'm always home or someone is so they are going to be screwed if they even come close.

Hi everyone! Just happened on this thread and moved to Seattle earlier this year. Finally getting settled and would love to join the next GTG. Can't make the 22nd (overseas trip then) but any future dates, I am assuming would go in this thread moving forward?

Have a few things I can bring along next time to try out as well. :)

Hi Greg,

Sorry for being late to the discussion, schedule is still a bit up in the air. Got room for 1 more if things work out ? Don't want to overload your most generous offer. I should know where my schedule is in a week.

As to gear I'm mostly an AVA guy, so could bring Frank's CF (cathode follower) tube pre, and if my back is good I also have his Ultravalve amp, if there is any interest. If not no sweat, just thinking out loud, sounds like there will be plenty of great options already. As has been noted it's nice to hear how one's gear sounds in other systems when possible.

While cozy is putting it mildly, once I get things a little more arranged around the shack I'll try to host something come spring. .............JD

I think we have room for one more. I figure I have 6 places to sit but there is also standing room, we can always switch up on the chairs.

If everyone could write my address down that would be great, I don't want to leave it up here forever.

SFDude,

Welcome to Seattle, I plan on doing these a few times a year so watch here for info.

Jake, I'll pm you regarding the food. That might work out well for you to come a little early. We could even do the work in the real kitchen in the house depending on what we make. I don't have the audio room kitchen loaded up yet so it's a bit limiting.

I think people should bring whatever they like to drink, I have a bunch of light beer over there that I don't drink and I was going to pick up some wine for everyone that likes it. I drink hard apple cider these days and sometimes a drink or some wine. Jake and I will figure out food for everyone and I'll grab some water as well.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you that are coming, this should be a lot of fun. I have enough parking up at the house so no one will have to walk far.

Hello all,

Something we haven't talked about is how to play YOUR music. I have a mac mini and a pure i20 doc like I mentioned. The only CD player I have is really old and really cheap, not the best thing to play CDs on for any kind of quality.

I'm happy to pop every ones CDs into the mac mini and copy them so we can use a good playback source or someone could bring a CD player or we can use the one I have. If people have ipods or iphones that are 5s or older we can use my i20 doc but that still isn't as good as the mac mini for playback, not as good but still pretty impressive.

Let me know what you think and we will figure out the best solution forward.

Greg

Will files on a thumb drive work?  If so do I need to worry about how the drive formatted before putting music files on it?

I have not tried a thumb drive before but I think it has to be formatted for an apple computer.

Hi Flo,

Besides the people that are coming this time I have a friend that is also coming so I think we are full this time. You are more than welcome to come next time if it is at my house. Also, if someone ends up not making it you are welcome to come, keep your eye on this thread. Thank you for the offer to use your Oppo, I've been wanting to hear one of those so perhaps next time you could bring it?

Flo, you are welcome to come since Author has decided to skip this GTG. It would be great if you can bring your Oppo.

Hopefully Author, you will make the next one.

Hi Jeff,

Hopefully you can make it and you heal quickly. If it's too hard to bring gear just bring yourself, you will still be able to hear what the speakers can do...

Do we have a start time?
Title: Re: PUGET SOUND AUDIO GROUP???
Post by: gregfisk on 21 Oct 2016, 02:27 am
Do we have a start time?

The start time is noon on Saturday, very sorry for not being more involved before now...

I have had a very difficult time the last 3 weeks with Mom in emergency twice, (we take care of her) in and out of two rehab facilities and last Sunday we lost our Mat the Cat who we have had for 13 years. This came much quicker than what we were told so it was especially hard. Then right after he passed I had 8 family members staying here until this morning. Needless to say we are pretty fried right now but life goes on...

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone. Jake, if you could post here, pm or email me about any ideas you have for food that would be great! I have ideas as well so I'm sure we will be fine. My wife Tracey will be heading up to our beach house for the weekend so we will have the audio room and the house to ourselves which of course includes the house kitchen.

If anyone has any questions let me know here or PM, email me tonight or tomorrow. I know this is going to be fun and believe me I could use some fun!

Greg

Agreed!  Jake we can postpone if need be!

Family is FIRST!

Guys,

This is exactly what I need!

Like I said, I'm looking forward to this and all is good right now. Mom is in a great place getting rehab and nursing care and each day makes the loss of my cat a little easier.

Come on over and let's have some fun!

I wasn't trying to whine about anything, I was just explaining why I wasn't more on top of our GTG which I normally would be. Looking forward to the experience and meeting some people who are into a hobby that I really enjoy!

Come and have a great time, that's what matters to me right now!

I'm not going to make it this time, need to ice my wrist for 10 minutes every hour, kind of a hassle when not at home, and my wife invited some friends over for dinner, so I'd need to be back in Gig Harbor by 5 PM.  Looking forward to the next get together. Greg I hope your Mom is doing better and that the music helps you get back on track.

My audio friend Marcus is not going to make it or if he does it will be an in and out affair. So, if anyone else would like to join in you are welcome to come. Just email, PM me and I'll shoot you my address.

Also, just want to confirm noon as the start time, you are welcome to show up early or later no problem. Jakej is going to come a little early and help out with the food, otherwise just bring whatever you feel like. Audio gear, music, pop, booze, nothing, whatever works for you.

We live off the road, there are two dirt driveways heading up to our place. You take the first one and then veer left or go straight and just park at the top in front of either the 2 story gray garage or the brown single story building. Just don't park in the driveway in front of the old white house on the right so they can get out of their parking area.

Let me know if you can make it and if you have any questions.

Hey Jake!

How about 10:30 or a bit later? I had a very long week and I'm just getting to bed now about 12:30 Saturday morning.

We don't have to have everything ready when people show up, we can just put them to work when they get here :lol:

See everyone in about 12 hours or so  :thumb:

What a great first PSAG get together! I got to meet some great new people and listen to some excellent new gear. Greg was a great host and has a beautiful dedicated audio room and getting to hear his GR Research Super V speakers in that large room was a real treat. It was also nice to meet Marcus, Jake and Flo, all nice guys who brought over some great gear as well. I was there for six hours and it felt like it went by in a snap. Looking forward to another meet some day!

There were five of us including our host Greg.  Myself, Jake, and I'm JakeJ here on AC.  Mike who is MCA here.  Flo who is dixi on AC.  Flo is from Romania originally and he was very interesting to talk to.  Finally Marcus who is a friend or Greg's and recently joined us as giantnutz.  Sorry, Tuan, I didn't take any photos of people, just gear.

Ya wanna meet us then you know what you gotta do!

The GR Research Super V's, they are incredible.  Greg's pair have the open back version of the P-Audio driver and the soundstage was wide and deep.  Makes me want to hear a set of Super 7's.  Makes me want to hear more of Danny's designs.

Lets see, we listened to four different amps.  First up was Gregs Crown XLS1500 Class D amp.  It sounded pretty good on the V's.  There were a couple of instances where there was some treble glare that got to me but all in all pretty good, and for a couple of hundred buck on the used market.  Next up was a pair of Quicksilver Mono 90's and they were typical of Quicksilver which eschews a vintage sound character, rounded bass and a bit creamy up top.  Next we listened to a pair of Atma-Sphere M-60s.  Now these were just the ticket for the V's, the top opened up, the midrange smoothed and there was no issue with bass as the servo subs in the V's were matched just fine, no gooey-ness here.  Last we listened to the deHavilland 845 amps and holy moly these are without a doubt the most wonderful sounding tube amps I have ever heard.  The bass is better controlled than the previous tube amps, the midrange was incredibly liquid, and the top continues this on to the sweetest high treble.  I want a pair.

We used three sources.  First was Greg's Apple Mac Mini server through his Metrum Acoustics Octave mini DAC, next we used Flo's Exemplar Audio modded Oppo 105 (pretty darn nice and we listened to all the amps with this), last was my CEC TL51X transport and Greg's server through my Metrum Acoustics HEX DAC.  I felt all the digital sources were fairly evenly matched in sound.  I could not make out any glaring differences and in fact thought they all presented music without any added colorations of their own.

I have some more photos of gear like MCA's on my phone.  If I find any that are worth adding I will.

I want to thank everyone who made it to our first GTG, Jake, Flo, Marcus and Mike, I had a really great time talking to all of you. Thank you also Tuan for getting this all started, even if you couldn't make it this time. What a bunch of great guys to spend a Saturday with, and man did we have some good gear to listen to. A special thanks to Jake for coming early and helping out with the food. And Mike, thank you for taking the time to post pictures, If anyone else wants to post more pictures please do.

Jake pretty much summed up my impressions regarding how the different gear sounded, The M-60s are really nice with the Super V's and a better match than my Butler 2250,  which we didn't get around to listening to. I wanted to throw the XLS 1500 into the mix just to show what that amp can do for very little money. The show stopper for me was the deHavilland 845 amps, they just do everything right. What a wonderful presentation, all the detail top to bottom and silky smooth at the same time. Jake's Metrum Hex dac was definitely a few notches above my Metrum Octave, more clarity, open and detailed without any added harshness at all.

I'll be looking at my calendar again soon and hopefully we can get something in the works sooner than later. Would also like to see some new faces

I kind of fell out due to my baby boy being born on September 29th.  I would definitely love to come to the next one and bring some gear to compare. Think I am also going to try to hit up the meeting on November 8th in Kirkland.. I am in silver lake (Everett).. Sonny are you the one I bought the dyna 20/2 from?

Thanks!

I would like to offer up another GTG on Saturday Dec. 3rd. I know it's somewhat short notice but my plans changed so I have this opportunity to get some of us together.

Let me know who can make it and would like to come. New faces are welcome and maybe some of you who really wanted to come last time can. I will probably start it early again for those who have a bit of a drive. Let's get a head count and see how we land. The place isn't huge but if people don't mind standing in the kitchen we will be fine. Since the kitchen is just the back of the listening room, it's not a terrible place to be (that's where the beverages are) and we can certainly switch around.

Greg,

I am definitely interested. I hadn't expected to be on this side of the Pacific now, but my father's situation has decided my near-term future location.

I would be happy to bring my D. Sachs 6SN7 Preamp along. I suspect Alan (aldcol) would be interested if he has returned from his travels.

There is a small chance I will fly to Taiwan by the 3rd, but I don't anticipate it. My wife has already flown to Taiwan, so there's no need to find distractions for her.  :thumb:

Greg,

There's always the chance that there will be too much gear at one of these G2Gs, but I'd like to offer to bring any or all of the following items:

AVA 400R amp
Gustard X20u DAC
D Sachs 6SN7 Model 2 preamp with Jupiter Cu caps
Triode Wire Labs loom (RCA, speaker cables, American 10+ PC, Digital American HC PC)

Don is sending me a new rectifier tube that he says adds just a touch more magic to the already amazing sound of my preamp. How could I refuse?

Let me know what to bring. Aldcoll and I have secured permission to drive up together in my vehicle. [I must have made a good impression on Sue for her to sanction this.]  :lol:

Hi Michael,

We had a lot of gear here last GTG and I think everyone really enjoyed switching it up. I for one would like to hear whatever you decide to bring. Mike has been letting me borrow his 845 amps and they really do sound good. They are very full with a lot of meat on the bone so to speak even thou my Servo Subs are doing the heavy lifting.

Looking forward to meeting you and hanging out.

I'm really looking forward to hearing MCA's 845 amps. Unless I'm mistaken, this will be my first time hearing 845 amps.

Could one of you pull some strings with the Washington State Patrol to arrange a traffic free corridor for Alan and me? It would make our long drive much safer and smoother. Poor Alan will have to put up with my company for a solid four hours up and back. :icon_lol:

Just touching base about Saturday, I thought starting around noon was a good idea since we have a couple of long commuters coming. If you guys from the new country of Oregon want to show up a little earlier I'll put you to work.

Looking forward to seeing all of you. Like last time I do ask that you take your shoes off because it is not that big and gravel and dirt outside and if you want to bring food or drink to share that would be great. I will have some of both here but I have had a long week and will have a long weekend so any help is much appreciated. I don't have JakeJ this time with his chef knife, I do like to cook but who knows what you will end up at least this time.

Bring all the gear you want, the 845s are hooked up now and sound amazing to these ears.

See you all Saturday!

I would like to thank you guys for accepting me as a outsider to you Puget Sound Group :thumb:

Greg what a great room and I hope to be back.  I didn't get any real good pictures of the equipment so maybe MCA could ad a few.

I was really glad to be present for the swapping and catch one of the holy grail moments we all hear about is this trying at times hobby.

The Dan Saches Pre Amp and the rebuilt Dynaco's (I think I have that right) was one of the magical moments we all wish to have at home.   And yes MCA will let the amps go if asked :thumb:

I have been assured them Pre Amp will be in Taiwan by the end of the week.  Or do I need to baby site again Michael :scratch:

I have also set all my alearts for the first 70 degree days in Seattle FLO :thumb:

Till the next time.

Greg,

Absolutely agree with Alan. It was great fun to be there Saturday. [I still question my sanity for driving so long only to drive back 6 hours later.] Anyway, as you know, I desperately needed some R&R, and your G2G was what I needed.

Thank you, Greg. Stick a bed in that space and I'll rent it for a month.  8)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alan,
I'm debating hard on whether I want to take the Don Sachs preamp to Taiwan. I want it, but I just don't know if I'll be there for 3 months or 3 weeks this time. I think you know why. Either way I still need to buy an amp. Without the Model 2, I'll get a Nuprime ST-10 to pair with my Gustard. With the Model 2, the ST-10 won't pair well as its input impedance is too low. I'd need an amp with 47k and higher. I'd likely buy a VTA ST120 tube amp. Decisions, decisions...
I thank both of you for making such a long drive for what seemed like a short listening session. Trying to get Flo's server to run was something I really wanted to hear but it ended up just not working out and we needed to move on.
Alan made a good observation with the Sache's and Dynaco's, they really did sound good together. The magical moment at the previous GTG was my Joule Electra MK11-SE pre amp with Mike's much more expensive (compared to his Dynac's) Dehaviland 845s, which I fell in love with. It is a crazy hobby and finding that magic is not easy to do. This is what I look forward to having these get togethers because everyone learns so much, especially me. Mike has once again allowed me to listen to his Dynaco's for a little extra time and I've been doing that this evening.
I want to thank everyone for making it, bringing food and drink and of course your wonderful selves for the enjoyment of all. It was good to meet alexscotti and and Allen for the first time. Also, while I felt like I already new Michael well I met him for the first time too. We have both been dealing with what happens to some of us at this time in our lives so it meant a lot to talk a bit about hat. Each time I do these it feels like a new adventure and I get to know each one of you a little bit more.
Thanks again to all,
Greg
Was there a consensus on the SQ of the Gustard X20?
 Sorry I missed this gathering; maybe I can make the next one (if invited  :)). I have a diy Tortuga LDR pre and will have the Holo Springs R2R nos, os, dvd DAC Level 2 that I could bring. It would've been interesting to A/B with the Gustard. A delta sigma/R2R faceoff. :)
Best,
Roy
Hi, Roy.
Can you believe it? We all got so concentrated on switching out amplifiers with my D. Sachs Model 2 and Greg's Joule preamp that we plum forgot to try out the Gustard.  :duh: It wasn't till people were getting ready to head home that we realized it.
I wish you had attended this G2G. I could have heard your Tortuga LDR preamp. I've certainly read good things about it.
Yes Roy,
I was talking to Michael about his dac as he was walking to his car, saying how much I really wanted to hear it while it was "in the house". Anyway, I think he thought I was trying to get him to leave it, which I wasn't at all. But,  it probably sounded like that after I realized we didn't get it into the system and it was out the door. I'm running what I think is a pretty good dac, the Metrum Octave which is a R2R nos dac. But JakeJ's Hex R2R nos dac was much better to my ears. It would have been interesting to listen to the "new hot dac" compared to the "old hot dac" I bought when it was all the rage for awhile not all that long ago.
And Roy, you are always invited and welcome. I also welcome you bringing anything you would like to compare and listen to in a different environment. Like I mentioned I tried the first iteration of the Tortuga passive and it didn't work for me. Hearing it again would be a pleasure and perhaps my new room and different gear would change my thoughts?
LOL! Greg,
I came very close to offering to let you keep the Gustard till Monday if you could ship it to me to arrive by today. I guessed the approx. 24 hour shipping would be mind-blowingly expensive, so I bit my tongue.
Despite all that driving by both Alan and myself, we did not sleep a wink in either direction. :)
Don't feel bad Mike, I did the same thing a few months ago. I would turn them right side up save them, post them again and every time they would be upside down when I re posted them.
We all just have to do what a car dealership owner did here is Seattle many years ago. He would do commercials while standing on his head and would say. "I'll stand on my head to make you a deal" Of course he died not long after so maybe that's not such a good idea :lol:
Hey Greg, that was the old Cal Worthington car commercials, right?
Glad you had lots of fun.  Looking forward to doing it again.  I will have 12/24 - 1/1 off and am planning on coming over to see family and hopefully pick up the Pass X350.5 from Tuan.  Probably not a good time for audio G2G's but thought I'd throw it out there
Hey Jake,
Thanks for fixing that, everything looks much better when your'e not standing on you head. It was actually Glen Grant Chevrolet and Glen was the original owner, they were one of our accounts back then before they sold out. The one son took it over and the other one who I didn't care for at all started one down in Tacoma somewhere, he was a real piece of work. We used to do the alarm work for Glen who had a place out of Kenmore on the water, pretty nice guy for the most part.
I will be home after Christmas and also New Years but not sure if we will be here or at our Camano place. I'll keep in touch and maybe we can catch up for a little while before going back to the madness of work.
I haven't made them before but do have a 14" slide saw and a portable table saw. The blades are in pretty good shape so you should be O.K. for awhile anyway.
I need to build a support structure for a new platform bed that I'm getting in a couple of weeks but after that you are welcome to borrow them for awhile.
Was looking around, and just found this thread. I'd love to talk gear and music, and listen to some other systems. I suppose it's because of the company I've kept (mainly work colleagues), but nobody I have known seems to appreciate the therapeutic effect of good music on a good system.
Is there another get-together planned any time soon?
Hi, Tin_ear!
I'm way down in Vancouver, WA (for the next 2 months anyway).
Hey, Greg!
I am buying the Daedalus Audio Apollo speakers from Lou. I suppose there is a potential for stopping by with my Apollos in tow for a listen in your party room if the logistics and G2G timing can be arranged in advance. [Hint. Hint!] You know, I pick up the speakers in Ferndale and drive south to your place to recover from all the driving. Then, after six or so hours of outrageous music, I pack 'em up and say my farewells.
Food for thought. Remember how important it is to take a day off every now and again.  :icon_twisted:
I'd be willing to host, but once you see the pics (when I get a gallery started) of my two systems in their rooms, you'll know the room dimensions/layout are not conducive to a good soundstage, by any means.
I will be happy to host, I had back surgery in May and did not see the new posts.
As soon as Michael finds out when he will be picking up his speakers he will let us all know and we can make a plan. I have room for 6 people sitting in O.K. positions, 2 more people sitting on one side of the room and anyone else who doesn't mind standing at the back of the room in the kitchen.
Once we know a date and Michael and I can confirm that date will work, I would ask anyone who can make it to post here.
I look forward to seeing old faces and meeting new ones, this will be a lot of fun.
Very cool!  Keep me...you know, posted. :jester:
New toys to play with include a Musical Paradise MP-D2 DAC (Greg, you get that Denafrips yet?) and I have a YS Audio/Audio Experience A2 Gold Edition Balanced preamp that will be here Monday 6/19.  Also got great deal on a Revelation Audio Labs  Prophecy CryoSilver™ Reference DualConduit™ USB 2.0 Digital Link cable.  Yes, separating power from signal on USB does make an audible difference.
mresseguie - Will be following your thread on the Denafrips DACs with great interest.  However I'm a bit sad your Don Sachs SP-14 is on the other side of the world, but I also understand why.
I only began it today. Until I reviewed our PM thread from a few months ago, I had been unable to recall where I first heard of Denafrips. Now I know it was YOU who planted that evil seed in my brain! There's another 'super' DAC called the Holo something or other....I had the website 2 days ago....I'll track it down.
I'd be interested comparing my MP-D2 to a R2R Dac. The Denafrips look interesting and I've been interested in the Holo Spring for some time; almost bought one. Of course, the Yiggy is another that I'd love to hear.
I'm located on Olympic Peninsula side of Puget Sound but would be willing to venture to the other side for a gathering as soon as I get my new set of wheels. I would bring my DAC and perhaps my diy Tortuga LDR passive pre.
It would great if someone has a Lampizator DAC to compare with the MP-D2. They're both tube dacs with tube rectifiers so I'd be interested on how close the MP is in SQ.
Honestly, though, as we found out at Greg's first G2G there can be too much gear to get through before burn-out sets in.  Or we just run out of time.
I always want as much gear as possible to try out but Jake makes a good point. It was even harder at the second meeting, we only got to listen to Michael's pre for a short time "really nice by the way" and didn't get to hear his dac. We can try and push more gear into the system this time so we have more product to listen to.
Hi Tuan,
I don't have a turntable set up right now, I have some work to do to mine and I find myself being lazy and just listening to my mac mini most of the time.
That's not to say I wouldn't like to hear vinyl in my room but I don't have a phono stage either.
The more dacs the better in my book.
Michael is waiting for a pickup date on new Daedalus speakers, thus the long drive north.
I will chime in also that a narrow field of equipment could lead to better testing.
I could be persuaded to bring a Modwright KWA 150 SE.
I personally would like to hear a new OPPO.
Tuan,
Like Alan said, as soon as Michael finds out when he can get delivery from Lou he and Alan will drive up this way and pick up the speakers. Then they will head back down to my place and we will set them up and have some people over and play with gear.
It will be a lot of fun I'm sure and I look forward to having you all here.
Personally I would like to hear different dacs and maybe different pre amps. My Butler 2250 amp is having a problem with channel seperation. So, the only other amp I have is a Crown XLS1500 which is just O.K. It would be nice if someone else or more than one person could bring an amp when they come over.
Too bad I waited until last week to order my D Sachs Kootenay 120 amp. It won't be ready till end of August.  Alan's Modwright will come in handy.
Title: Re: PUGET SOUND AUDIO GROUP???
Michael,
You are forgiven for not ordering the Kootenay sooner.  It's all good.  The Modwright will suffice.  OK, OK, it will more than suffice and I am definitely bringing the Audio Experience A2 to play with.  Does the ModWright have balanced inputs?
Do you have some "window of opportunity" as to when you will be taking possession of your new Daedalus speakers?  I need a ball park idea so I can consult my crystal ball.  Sonny need the lead time as well.
I have searched and searched but cannot find a post where you tell us which model you decided on.  Help a brother out?
Jake,
Sorry, man. I'm getting Lou's new Apollo speakers. I call them Pans on steroids!
They're three-way speakers with Lou's new ten inch woofer. Even before I heard them in Lou's workshop, I already knew I preferred three-ways. The Apollos were just too good to pass up or wait five months for. Alan was there, so he can tell you.
I'll ask Lou when he thinks they'll be ready. July is my window of opportunity. My wife and I will leave the PNW for Colorado followed by Atlanta, GA no later than August 1st.  :thumb:
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=164244)
The Apollo's are far above the Pans by light years.
Edit:  No more late night posts :duh:
And besides we all know Lou is concerned about his diet and wouldn't need steroids drugs for that.  You know he only uses wood harvested during a harvest moon :scratch:
Lou said the earliest the speakers will be ready is July 7th, but if the backplate anodizing takes longer there could be a delay. In the meantime, once the crossovers are installed, he will begin breaking them in, so they'll be well broken in by the time of the G2G.
So my window is anytime after the 7th and before the 28th of July. Let's fix a date, gang.
I wonder if I even need to bring a Denafrips DAC if the Lampi and an MP-D2 and a Metrum DAC will be there. [I haven't committed to auditioning one yet because it may not be practical at this time.] Feedback, please.
Michael,
From a selfish standpoint it would be great if you brought the new Venus or which ever dac.  It would be a really useful comparison to the other two and I don't think the Lampi is that much more than the Venus, I could be wrong.
However, if it works out better for you to purchase the dac later once you have moved, then I and probably We will be fine with the wonderful dacs we will get to listen to. And I don't think you should be worrying about bringing a dac when you are bringing full blown apparently kick ass floor standers for everyone to listen to and enjoy.
Just my thoughts...
Greg
Greg,
I think mresseguie and aldcoll are refferring to MCA's Lampizator and I'll third that, not that I do not have great interest in Vinnie Rossi's LIO, that's another ear itch that needs scratchin', big time.  Then the icing on the audiocake is Lou's Apollo's!  OK, by the time the Apollo's get to Greg's they'll officailly be Michael's but you get my drift.
Frankly, this is looking like an incredible DAC shootout.  I have to work too early tomorrow but I will go back through the thread and make a concise list of DAC's that have been offered up.
Greg and all, I plan to make a significant contribution to the "snack bar" so please let me know if you have a food allergy or are vegan/vegitarian so I can plan around.
Oh, yeah, keep posting the time frame as my memory is terrible for dates and I need to get that in my phone/extended memory bank.
I started it to guage readers' interest, but there isn't much - Greg's interest noted.  :thumb: I would love to learn what's got people so excited on Head-fi and a couple other forums. Plus I'm surprised that thread has generated so little attention on AC.
Update:
Speakers won't be ready until ~July 15th. Lou stated they need time to break in and suggested that the 15th more realistic. If you had seen how massive the crossovers were, you'd understand. These are NOT your normal, petite looking crossovers. Remember that reference to steroids!
Plan for G2G from July 15 through July 28th.
I was going to suggest the 8th or the 22nd, it sounds like the 22nd is probably the way to go. I could do the 15th if that works better. It's not as good of a day for me but I could make it work.
Let's here some feed back and go from there.
This is shaping up to be a serious audiophile get together. It's better, I think, to have serious competition to better gauge each DAC's strengths and weaknesses.
It appears July 22nd is the big day. I'll be back home by this Thursday night, so I'll be able to follow up with you about shipping arrangements.
I'm looking forward to this.
The July 22 date works for me.  Like I said, I'd be happy to bring my MP-D2 with the Mighty USAF 596 rectifier. It will be very interesting comparing with the Lampy, Denefrips, Metrum Pavane and whatever else shows up. :thumb: I'm definitely looking forward to hearing Michael's new Daedalus speakers. I'd bring my 18" waveguiide/15" woofer speakers but they're too frickin' big and heavy(150 lbs each).
That's some kind of superb service from the designer/builder.  And let's not forget Alvin who is also puting some hours on the DENAFRIPS Venus for you (and us).
Let's see now...Michael is getting a new pair of speakers, new DAC, and just got a new Don Sachs preamp (although it is in Taiwan...SIGH)!  I guess we'll just have to march on with what we have. :bawl:  I thought the first Fisk Audio Follies was good, this next one is shaping up to be truly incredible!
Thank's Micheal,
Sorry for the delay. Yes, Iv'e been really buried the last few weeks and for some reason I no longer get notices when a post is made. This is even thou I have checked the "to be notified box" :scratch:.
Here's where we sit as of today. We have 8 people that have confirmed they are coming, we have 2 people Sonny (Tuan) and SFDude (Dave) that are planning on coming if they can make it work. Then we have Lou which I would guess is a maybe and perhaps Tubeburner. So, that's 8 for sure with a possibility of 12. The room is 600 square feet with 6 listening chairs and 2 chairs on the side wall. The small kitchen behind the seating is where everyone else will need to stand. Zkidd, you and your friend are welcome to come. I think we are going to have to draw the line after that since we could end up with 14 people and that's pretty tight.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.
HI, Greg.
We could effectively double the sweet spot by using liberal amounts of Velcro. Staple Velcro pads to the ceiling and issue each participant a pair of denim shorts that have Velcro pads sewn onto them. Then, we simply attach 6 listeners to the ceiling by the seats of their pants/shorts. Problem solved!
I know. I'm brilliant.  8)
So I went back to the initiation of this G2G which was actually kicked off by AC member Tin_ear, whom we have not heard from since.  You out there Tin_ear?  See what you are responsible for? :lol:
Anyway I put together a list of members and the equipment offered up:
mresseguie - Daedalus Apollos & DENAFRIPS Venus DAC
Aldcoll - Modwright KWA 150 SE
JakeJ - Musical Paradise MP-D2 DAC NOS 5AR4 and JJ gold pin 6922 signal tubes, & Audio Experience A2 preamp
rajacat - Musical Paradise MP-D2 DAC NOS USAF 596 rectifier and ? signal tubes
Sonny - Schiit Jotunheim DAC
mca - Lampizator Atlantic or Vinnie Rossi LIO
alexcotti - Metrum Acoustics Pavane DAC
Pretty impressive list, eh?  I recommend we stick to using a Mac Mini for the source feeding the various DACs.  Greg has one and so do I.  As to cabling each of us might want to consider bringing what we need to connect the device we brought.  If anyone wants to bring thier reference music chime in and we'll figure out how to deal with that.  One possibility is to bring discs and burn that to mine or Greg's servers.  I'm opent to suggestions including bringing my CEC TL-51X transport.
Have a great Fouth of July gentlemen and see you on July 22nd!
Hello All,
Thanks for the warm welcome. As I have said in an email to Jake, the 22nd is my wife's birthday so in the interest of staying alive, I believe I will have to pass on the get-together so as to insure I will remain upright and taking air. Too bad as I wanted to lug my BAT VK 500 over and trash the Modwright amp...kidding of course...about the trashing but I did want to bring it.
If the missus for some reason decides that I can be forgiven for missing her birthday, I believe I will a time and place as I am a neophyte ....
Bob,
I fully understand your predicament. I'll happily buy your wife 2 dozen roses for the brief privilege of meeting you and experiencing that incredible amplifier. Perhaps, the others would be willing to add to that number.
When I read your ad and the price you're asking, I nearly jumped out of my seat in excitement that I could buy that amplifier. Then, of course, reality slapped me good and hard with the realization that 1) my wife would divorce me, but only after screaming at me in a combination of Mandarin, Taiwanese, and English  :surrender: :deadhorse: :flame:, and 2) I just paid a 2/3 downpayment on what is going to be an amazing tube amp that I have lusted after for a year.
I hope you can make it.
If I am able to make it, I'll happily bring some extra folding chairs (they're padded so aren't too uncomfortable!). It looks like there's enough offerings of gear to sample so I won't dive into the fray with this.
In any case, if you needed the extra folding chairs Greg, I'm happy to drop them off with you whether I am able to make it or not. We drop our son off in Shoreline for summer camp and it's not a big detour to drive a little further North to Bothell. Attention PSAG audiopeeps!
Lou (Daedalus Audio) asked about what cables/interconnects will be on hand. I told him I don't know. He feels cables/interconnects are very important at this level of quality components.
So....what is everyone bringing or what is already present?
Aldcoll will bring his Daedalus speaker cables. I'll bring my newly purchased DH Labs cryo silver XLR ICs to try. I think I have a TWL American 10+ PC, but I need to look for it. I have a cheapo 5' USB cord, and 8' Belden speaker cables.
Yes I will bring Daedalus Speaker cables.
I will also bring WyWires Blue RCA and Balanced for the MW KWA 150 SE.  They Are 1 Meter.
I forget who made the Power Cable.
IF we could Limit the cable swap as this is suppose to be a DAC DAY :nono:  Just saying to many options can get out of hand.
Well...I have a bunch of cables I could bring but Alan is correct, too many "spices" hide the real flavor of the dish.
Here is my list:
Jena Labs speaker and IC all balanced except one pair of RCA.
Cardas Golden Cross speaker and IC all RCA except one 1 meter pair of XLR.
Analysis Plus Silver Oval speaker and IC all RCA.
Of course they are of varying lengths and some may not make the distance.  Just sayin'
My powercords are from AudioMagic, Take Five Audio, LAT International w/ upgraded connectors.
That said, I do plan to bring my Revelation Audio Labs dual conduit USB silver cryo cable.
As to music I thought about burning some discs but I think I'll just bring my Mac Mini.  What say you to that?
What time are you thinking of beginning this shindig on the 22nd?
Alan and I ought to arrive at Lou's workshop by 9 or 9:30 (assuming no nasty traffic delays) and leave by 10-ish(?). [Who in their right minds hops in a car at 4 am to pick up a pair of speakers 5 hours distant? Dedicated audiophools!!] It'll take approximately 90 minutes to get to your place. Then, we'll have to set up. Any great pizza joints in the area? I'm going to need carbs after all that.
I'm thinking we could start around 1:30 which would give Michael, Allen and myself time to set up and do some sound checking before people start showing up. I'm thinking Jakej may want to come early since him and I will be working on food together, Jake?
I will have several choices of beverages on hand but feel free to bring your favorite concoctions as well if you like.
One thing I don't have is a disk spinner, at least not one that I would want to use. So, if anyone has one they could bring that would give us a couple of mac minis full of music and a way for people to play the disks they bring. Yes, please bring music you would like to try out and we can either throw it in the mac mini or play it on a spinner.
If anyone has any questions feel free to post here or you are welcome to PM or email me.
Take Care,
Greg
Sorry for not responding sooner, I'm at work and just caught this.  Yes, Greg, I absolutely plan on being involved in the food presentation.  I'll PM you this evening with a couple of ideas.
I can bring my CEC TL51-X transport with cables (coax & AES/EBU).  It also has Toslink but I don't have an optical cable.
Looks like there's enough interests to perhaps ask for a PNW Audio Society page?
What the consensus?
You don't think it will dry up after next weekend???
Or will there be a collection taken for a brass plaque designating Greg's room as "The Club House" :wtf:
Tuan,
There is already a Pacific Northwest Audio Society that has been in Seattle for many many years. I have had little to no luck getting involved in that Society. One person, I don't recall his name has tried to be helpful but those are entirely different people than all of us so we need our own name. I myself am fine with PSAG but perhaps we could come up with something better? It might even be fun to throw some names out there and take a vote.
One issue is there needs to be a facilitator and I'm going to have to exclude myself because of my work load these days.
One more thing Tuan, since you are the founder of this whole audio calamity, you are going to have to make it to a G2G pretty darn soon. Hopefully this one, but I know it's hard with a little one.
Edit: changed the name to reflect what I was trying to say.
Very Funny Allen :lol: :lol: :lol:. Hopefully it won't dry up and we don't run out of beverages :nono:.
I have always called my room "Woody's Garage" in honor of the man that owned all of the property around here and lived next door since the mid forties. The building was his garage and was in pretty bad shape when I bought the property. So much so that I couldn't get the building insured.
My Daughter designated the building as "The Dad Pad" which I thought was pretty funny. It's definitely a club house of sorts and we have joked about woman not being allowed except for certain situations which I won't go into here  :wink: :wink:.
Anyway, really looking forward to this event and seeing all of you again and meeting new faces.
I think you are referring to the Pacific Northwest Audio Society. http://www.audiosociety.org/
They seem to be accepting memberships on their page. Unless there really is another Puget Sound Audio Society.  :o
Yeah, those guys are a pretty stogy old bunch of Mercer Island elites.
We are our own group/club and I say we stay that way.  No, not that we are won't accept new members but that we identify as what we started with.  The PNAS collects dues and I for one would prefer we don't go down that path.  PNAS also does not meet at anyone's home but instead rents space somewhere in that area to hold their meetings.  Again, no thanks.  I would prefer that we be inclusive, not exclusive.  That does not mean we always have to meet at Greg Fisk's home but could maybe meet a couple of times per year hopefully at other member's abodes.  I'm coming from eastern WA, roughly a four hour drive.  I'd be tickled pink to travel to Alan or Michael's for a G2G.  Granted it will not work for every member to share their home but I'll wager with just a few volunteers we could pull it off.  Just sayin'.
Oh, and I vote for a plaque for Greg that says: "Woody's Audio Lab" or "Dad's Sound Pad"
I like Puget Sound Audio Group for a club name, my alternative is "Puget Sound Audio G2G".  We transcend the gear to converge on music and brotherhood.
Greg, I really like to go this time, but seems my wife just booked another trip for us to Lake Chelan. I will confirm it I think it is next weekend.  It silly but you are right I did instigate this whole thing and you've been kind enough now to host the first two!  Thank you!  Maybe the next one before the fall?  I would host but my space is only 14x19, in a designated room, so very difficult to do more than two at a time!
But I am talking about a page and fiorum on AC not another site.  sure call it what you will and PSAS just as good to e!
I can facilitate but would like another volunteer to help out.
Any votes out there?
Thanks
Tuan
Dave,
Yes, I was referring to PNWAS which is what Tuan posted as the new name for us. I was very distracted when posting and apparently went off the rails with the name:duh:. Maybe it's a sign :lol:
My wife and I have a long-range plan to sell our house in Corvallis next summer followed by our purchasing a new one somewhere in Vancouver, WA - quite likely in the Camas area not far from Lake Lacamas. WAF dictates that it'll be a newer home (2200 sq ft to 3000 sq ft), and probably will have a formal living room that may be a dedicated listening room for me.
Eventually, once we've settled into it, I'd happily host G2Gs for anyone foolish enough to drive there.
Don't get too excited. My wife has been known to be VERY picky when it comes to buying a house. It could take a long time.  :duh:
Title: Re: PUGET SOUND AUDIO GROUP???
Post by: JakeJ on 13 Jul 2017, 12:32 pm
Nice plan, Michael.  While Corvallis is very pretty country the Lacamas Lake area is very nice as well.  Lived in Washougal for a couple of years.  If it were me I'd focus on east of the lake as it is much more rural.
Tell your wife to take her sweet time.  You want a good choice that lasts a long time.  Plus the old addage: "Happy wife, happy life" generally holds true. :thumb:
Greg and Jake,
Thanks for the input and I agree, we should have our group separate from the PNAS, etc.
I think it should be PSAG as in the title of this thread.
Okay, so how do we go about asking for a page from the admin?
Hi PSAG potential members, please see the following link:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=71779.0 (http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=71779.0)
Can we get a volunteer to follow the directions and initiate this process?
One of the questions that we need to ask is the "catch phrase", what shall it be?
Our name should be Puget Sound Audio Group (PSGA).
Suggestions:
I'll start wit this one "Music, Equipment and Food, all for your sampling".
Thanks!
Michael,
You are as much a part of this group as anyone. I don't know too many people that would travel the distance you and Allen have. And, you're now bringing speakers to someone else's house so a bunch of people can listen to them. How cool is that! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
I could help out down the road on the site, right now I wouldn't be able to do a good job. I have always believed if you are going to do something you have to do it right.
Michale, I agree with Greg!  It's not the distance, it's the participation.  Having said that, I have created a page on FB called Puget Sound Audio Society, and unfortunately this was done prior to learning about the PSAS, other group's existence.  I can change the name, but if anyone on here is interested, please PM me and I can add you to the page.  I'd like to get more people like us, on the page.
Thanks
Hello all,
I would like to get a head count at this point so we have a better idea who is actually coming.
Start time is 1:30 or so and we should have something new up and running by then.
Jakej and myself will be making the food but if anyone has something they think people would like you are welcome to do so. Also, I will have a variety of beverages but bring what you like to drink to be sure.
If anyone has food allergies please don't hesitate to let me know. Just shoot me a PM and I can let you know what you will be O.K. with. I'm very flexable in that regard because of my Wife.
Shoes are fine while bring in gear but I'd like to keep it down to a minimum after that.
Any questions?
Oh, and just PM me for my address.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
Venus departed Los Angeles early this morning. It's on its way to Portland. Delivery is still set for end of day today. I'll plug it in and attach it to my Mac Mini for an extra 60 hours of burn in. Alvin informed me the Venus has approximately 100 hours burn in already, so it'll be at about 160 hours for the G2G.
I may bring a beverage if I can find the right single malt flavor. Will there be ice cubes?
Pm on the way.
Michael
P.S. Man oh man am I getting excited for this weekend.
***Update: Venus arrived in Portland 9:40 am. Sent out on delivery truck 10:33. Which number do I call to get a police escort for this delivery truck? :lol:***
When I first connected the Venus to my Mac Mini, I got nothing. The Mac initially recognised the DAC, but seconds later didn't.  :scratch: Alvin remotely helped me load/install the correct(?) firmware. It works now, but the sound is very scratchy. It's quite possible the issue here is that I'm running the USB cable from my Mac Mini into the Venus and RCA into my IDA-8. It's the only option for this amp. If I had an integrated amp sans DAC, this issue might disappear - or not.
I ended up borrowing my sister's Windows laptop PC, which I'm playing YouTube videos with. It sounds really good. Volume is low because my wife is 12 feet away.  :nono: I'll play some better tunes tomorrow to hear more.
Alvin will try to correct the issue later. It's possible that the firmware doesn't work well with my Mac Mini. It's also possible it has something to do with my IDA-8.
Just in case, it may be wise for someone to bring a Windows PC to the G2G. I'll keep you informed of progress with my Mini.
Mudslide!
I'm leaving Vancouver, WA on the 31st. My mother is healthy once again, so my watch is finished. My wife and I will stay with friends in Corvallis for 5 nights before hopping on a flight to Chicago (12 days) followed by flying to Boston (13 days). Then, we'll fly to Atlanta to stay for a month. We'll probably stay somewhere else for a couple weeks after this, but we haven't planned that far out.
Check with the others to see what opportunities exist.
Amanero may not be friendly for mac mini. I've one case of mac mini 2014 doesn't like amanero. I need to investigate more on this.
In amanero website, it says that: No Drivers needed for Mac OSX 10.6+ and Linux with UAC2 compliant kernel.
KS/Wasapi/WDM/ASIO Drivers for MS OS XP to Win8 32-64bit included at no fee.
Anyway just to be on the safe side, would any kind soul bring a Windows 10 pc with jriver or any good playback software.
I'm beginning to anxious now  :green:
One solution I can think of is to convert USB to S/PDIF between Mac Mini and DAC.  I can bring my iFi iLink to see if that fixes the issue.  Sound pretty good too.  Alvin, what do you think about that?
I also have a Singxter F-1 converter that I currently use with my metrum octave, we can try that too.
I don't really get why the dac would have a problem with a mac mini which is what I also use, we can try it on mine as well when it gets here. Jake is bringing his mac mini so we should be able to get something to work.
But...but...I'm bald.... :lol:
My issue was the Venus at first wouldn't play at all. Alvin helped me reload firmware using a borrowed Windows PC. Music flowed from the PC through the DAC and into my speakers with no issues. However, as soon as I switched over to my Mac Mini, I heard crap, crud, and sh#tty crackling/scratchy sounds.
I decided it must be something to do with settings somewhere in my OSX, so I peeked into my 'Audio Midi Setup' 'Audio Devices' toolbox. Nothing appeared to be wrong, but I clicked on Combo384 Amanero anyway just to poke around. The format was set to its highest setting of 768000Hz. CD quality is 44100Hz, so I selected this just to try. Well, what do you know? My issue is fixed.
Now, I assume my output is limited to a max of 44.1kHz with this setting, but there are other settings which I can experiment with.
I've adjusted the format to 192000Hz with no discernible ill effects.
Alan and I are still alive, and sitting in a Denny's catching breakfast. We're ahead of schedule and need to kill time before arriving at Lou's to pick up my Apollos.
Glad everyone is still alive, that's always a bonus :thumb:.
The salmon is on the water smoker after marinating for about 6 hours and the Char Siu (Chinese BBQ Pork) is done.
Jake stopped by yesterday with the makings for his salad extravaganza he put together.
Woody's Garage is ready for a workout :D.
See you all when you get here, drive safe. We wouldn't want any of the equipment to get hurt :lol:.
So here are some pictures of DAC day featuring the NEW Daedalus Apollos we picked up just two hours prior to powering them up.
A shout out goes to Lou of Daedalus Audio who canceled a day on the water of Puget sound to allow Michael to take delivery.
Lou also boxed up some of his DiDs and darn near a loom of Wywires Platnium which are now in my system for a day,, or two.
Power for the day was supplied by Greg's Butler or my Modwright.  Music for the day was via Mac Mini.  We soon discovered that that page in the manual that says if you use a MAC no issue, plug and play.
I am at a loss for the name of Greg"s Pre Amp  :scratch:
We stated with Greg's GR Super V's and with some dramatic flair we fired up the Apollo's
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=165961)
I'll work on the picture :nono:
Jake J and Rajacar both brought The New MP-D2 with different tubes and caps...  Me liked
AlexScotty brought a Pasvane.
And then MCA whipped out the Lampi Atlantic with volume.  We ran it straight to the Modwright and did a few W or w/O DiDs and the difference  was noticeable and it was in all the good ways.
Greg Smoked A Salmon and it was so fresh it pinched me as I walked past
As the crowd thinned Jake J pulled out his all balanced  Audio ??? Pre Amp  ( Okay I am having brain issues)  But I liked it.
Michael had arranged to have a new DENAFRIPS Venus.  We new that it had less the 200 hours on it and maybe some more time would help.
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=165962)
And some one else might ad to what I missed.
P.S Dixi/Flo thanks for the last of the wine.  It helped me fall asleep.
Alan
hello, I was Alex's guest, my name is Chris Morgan. I am an audiophile, but my gear is very modest and not really worth mentioning. I also live in NYC, so a bit far most of the time!
I had a great time at the meetup and thanks to all who attended and provided food and drink, I am glad to think I helped a bit with the Mac setup at least.
Just caught this during a slice of downtime at work.
Greg's preamp is a Joule-Electra LA-150 MkII (I think) and mine is an Audio Experience (by YS Audio) A2 with Gold Edition upgrades.
Out of all the DACs I liked mine best :oops: :thankyou: :beer: but the Metrum Pavane (alexscotti) and the Lampi were very good as well.  The Venus does need more time but the potential is there.
Oh, and in reference to that page in the manual, "Plug-n-Play" is term to be loosely interpreted! :wink:
There's so much to say, but I don't have enough time to say it all right now. I'll just have to write it up in bite sized chunks as time allows.
First of all I want to thank Greg for making this G2G possible by offering the use of his man cave. I can only dream of having such a space some day.  :o  :drool: :bowdown: I guess I should thank Greg's wife for allowing us to borrow him for the day.  :thumb:
As Alan mentioned, we left Vancouver, WA at the ungodly early hour of 4 am in order to avoid the nasty traffic along the Tacoma to Marysville stretch of I-5. [My wife and I got stuck in it just 2 weeks ago while returning from Vancouver, BC. :duh:] The combination of its being Saturday morning and our passing through at 6:30 am made for smooth driving. If only it were always so.
We arrived at Lou's speaker workshop in Ferndale after stopping at Denny's for a much needed breakfast and coffee. I think we arrived right about 9:30. We unboxed the Denafrips Venus DAC to give Lou a listen and to compare it to the Modwright modded Oppo Sonica DAC. The Venus had only burned in for 150 hours, but I think it performed very well nonetheless. I couldn't hear enough difference to declare one or the other better, but Lou felt the Venus was just a tad solid state sounding vs the tube sound of the Oppo. I can't help but wonder what the Venus would sound like with 300 hours...
We packed the speakers and the Venus into my Tacoma; got some DiD samples and lovely looking wires/cables to audition; hugged Lou goodbye, and roared off heading south to Bothell. Man, those speaker shipping boxes are big.
One-plus hours later, we arrived at Greg's home.
To be continued...
I can't say enough about how great the people are who have come to my place, I couldn't ask for a better group of guys.
Jake, once again you went out of your way to help out with the food and I think we did a good job this time, so Thank you!
Michael and Allen are just plain crazy, and I mean that in the best of ways. What a long day that must have been for you two.
Mike, as usual was very helpful with getting things handled when needed and in fact everyone was super helpful when they had something that they could help with.
Michael's new speakers couldn't be any different in design than mine. But what I realized is when a speaker is true to the music there is less difference that one would think. We didn't play my Super Vs for very long because I really wanted this G2G to be about Michael's speakers which was a load of fun. One thing is for sure, those Apollos can play just as loud as my speakers and my ears were still ringing in the morning. I like loud music for sure but someone was really working them out towards the end of the day.
My take away with the gear is I really liked the Musical Paradise Dacs for their ability to create warmth and detail at the same time. On the other hand the Lampi Atlantic when run without a pre amp was outstanding in the warmth with clarity it delivered, I thought it was the clearest sounding dac I heard. I'm fond of metrum dacs since I own one but the pavane was on a whole other level and sounded very good. The Denifrips was also very good but it didn't have the meat on the bone sound that I prefer. Like others said, it probably just needed a bit more break in time. It certainly had a good sound to it and is no slouch for sure.
Michael, I'm looking forward to your story and continuation of the day.
Since Jake has stretched the Puget Sound to the Tri Cities area, I don't think it's not that big of a leap to include Spokane.  :green:
There are 3 or 4 of us that get together from time to time in Spokane. One is an ACer, Folsom, and another is a speaker designer, Luke (Aluminous Aduio).
I have a daughter and son-in-law in Lake Oswego (I recently hooked them on vinyl), so I make it over to the PDX area on a regular basis and also to SEA for a concert from time to time.
Laura,
I have relatives in Spokane and get over there at least once a year. You are more than welcome to come by when you can and even if I'm not having a G2G at the moment you are welcome to stop by. I could probably get a few of the locals together on pretty short notice.
Michael and Allen come from Oregon and Jake comes from Richland. Spokane is definitely not too far to be included.
   I want to thank Greg for hosting this great G2G. :thumb: He has the perfect setup for hosting such gatherings. The salmon was awesome along with the other goodies. It was fun putting faces on and meeting the other AC members present.
 Greg and his family have a very nice compound which occupies much of an entire cul-de-sac with three houses and a dedicated man cave. Despite control of the street, he still went to extraordinary lengths to attenuate the sound emanating from the man cave with double walls, resilient channel, etc. Of course, this not only controls the sound but adds to the quality.
   This is the first "audiophile" gathering I've attended, so I was very interested to hear how my system would stack up to some others. I must admit that it's very difficult to compare gear and systems in a party like environment but it still was educational. After a meal and a bunch of beer my ability to discern fine differences was somewhat attenuated. :scratch: Nevertheless I was happy to conclude that my MP-D2 DAC, that I brought, could hang with the others. A lot of this is just a matter taste and synergy. I liked both of the speaker sets that were present although Greg's Super V's were rotated out in favor of Michael's new Daedalus's shortly after I arrived. There was a very impressive array electronic gear in attendance along with high end cables and the new Daedalus footers. Much of this gear I'd love to take home and evaluate in my system and listening space.
   I left the gathering after about 5 hours, I think, with drooping eyelids and burned out ears. Made it to the Edmonds ferry and promptly dozed off in the line. Got back to Port Townsend safely and passed out while listening to my rig and woke up at 3AM. :roll: :green:
Thanks again Greg,
Roy
Hey Guys, sounds like everyone had a great time!  So, what was all the feedback and opinions on all the equipment listened?
Anyways, since we don't have a circle yet for us PNWAS or PNWAG or PNWG2G, I was going to see if anyone is interested in a pair of 10" Dayton Passive Subs I built and have no use for.  I had these old HSU Research HRSW-10 that the driver's foam surrounds deteriorated so I replaced them with the Daytons.
So, the Drivers were about $125 each back in the day, so, any offers?
I also have two Adcom Amps, a GFA555 and the GFA535 if anyone is interested as well as other things
If interested, PM me and I can text some pictures.
Thanks
Next installment:
Once we arrived at Greg's man cave, we immediately unpacked the Denafips Venus DAC and connected it to his Mac Mini and his preamp. Well, we suffered a Mac attack because his Mini didn't feel like talking to the Venus. I think it took a good 45 minutes to figure out which setting was appropriate, but we finally did succeed in getting them talking to each other.
We played several songs using Greg's speakers so he could get a clear idea of how good the Venus is. I'd like to point out that the Venus had just 150 hours burn in, and I've read that anywhere from 200 to 300 hours are needed for it to shine. [I'm still burning it in as I write this - at ~180 hours now.] I'll let Greg post his thoughts on this combo. Greg's Butler amp belts out something like 200w/ch and these speakers are 96.5dB/8 ohm. Try to imagine the potential there.  :nono:
After Greg was satisfied with his impressions of the Venus/Super V speakers, we disconnected his speakers and their bass amps in order to set up my new Daedalus Audio Apollo speakers. You can see in the picture that Aldcoll posted that these are not especially large speakers. This is good because I don't have a big living room in my Taiwan apartment. They actually looked kind of small in Greg's big man cave. Did anyone take room measurements BTW? Initially, we positioned the Apollos in the same spots as Greg's speakers. That must have placed them 10 feet apart and 5' from the front wall. [Correct me if I'm wrong.] There was just a little toe in, I think. Not much was necessary because the front baffle is already slanted inward. I'm biased here, so take my impressions with a grain of salt. THESE SPEAKERS ROCK!! See? Only a little bias. 8)
Here is the list of DACs that were present for the day's G2G: Metrum Octave, Metrum Pavane, Denafrips Venus, MP-D2 (2 units with different tubes and caps!), Lampizator Atlantic w/preamp function added. I think that's all, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I forgot one. Throughout the day, we switched DACs in and out to compare this one to that one. And, yes, the Mac threw us some nasty curve balls just when we began getting over-confident. There were nine participants, so there was usually lively conversation, bodies moving in and out, and plenty of distractions. Aren't we audiophiles solitary creatures who just listen for hours at a time? :scratch: :icon_lol:
Important announcement: If I say something less than wonderful about your DAC that you don't like, please remember I'm stating my impression. I'm not attacking you personally. I'm not shit talking your favorite DAC. If you get upset, take a walk or drink a brew. Chill the f#*k out, dude. It's no different from my casually saying I prefer dome tweeters over ribbon tweeters. I'm simply offering my preference. Thank you.  :roll: End of announcement.
Now where was I? Oh, yeah. I was about to trash talk people's DACs, but ever-so-politely. The Metrum DACs and the Denafrips Venus DAC are R2R DACs. I'm still learning what the means sonically. This was the first time I had ever heard one - let alone three. I can't tell you yet how they sonically differ from 'regular' DACs. I spent more time listening to the Venus, JakeJ's MP-D2, and the Lampi Atlantic than the others. I didn't try to avoid any. It just happened that way. Here is the order in which I like these DACs (least to best):
Metrum Octave
MP-D2 with the oil caps (I think)
Metrum Pavane (didn't listen to it very long)
Venus/JakeJ's MP-D2 (differences, but I wouldn't say one is better than the other)
Lampi Atlantic with preamp upgrade
MCA told me all the upgrades to his Lampi, but I didn't write them down. Perhaps he can remind us here? This DAC stood out from the pack. It is a WOW!! DAC. I get why folks fall in love with this beast of a DAC. It's not cheap though. It's more than double what most of the other DACs cost. Sure, it has an excellent sounding preamp function, which is a big plus if you don't already have a preamp. Mike, do I recall correctly that this DAC costs ~$6500 new?
There was a lovely tube sound coming out of JakeJ's MP-D2 that just made me feel like I'd been sipping a really nice Scotch on a cool winter evening. I'm sure he can fill us in on his tube and caps selections. I can't help but wonder if my adding this to my D Sachs Model 2 tube preamp/D Sachs KT88 Kootenay 120 tube amp combo would create too much tube sound. I probably won't try it, but I might try it with a SS amp someday. Jake, how much would your DAC cost with all the upgrades that you chose? It's worth it in my opinion.
The Venus is a great sounding DAC. It doesn't sound like tubes, but it doesn't sound like solid state to my ears either. I think most of us agreed that it hadn't burned in enough yet, so it hadn't opened up or 'bloomed' yet. Nonetheless, acoustic instruments like guitar, piano, cello, banjo, sax (not my favorite instrument btw), and harp just sound so real to me. I'm not a musician, so I don't describe these sounds like a musician would. The strings vibrate when plucked or struck. There is decay as the sound diminishes. Can I say they're three dimensional sounding? Sure, why not? [I should point out that the Lampi and Jake's MP-D2 impressed me the same way.]
That's about all you'll get from me tonight. Please forgive me if I didn't say wonderful things about your DAC. It's not you, okay? :thumb:
After days of lots of free time, I find myself short of free time. I will squeeze in more thoughts as I have time. I'm moving on Monday. I fly to Chicago on Aug 6, and to Boston on Aug 18. I'll be in Atlanta, GA by Aug 31.
Peace.....enjoy your music!
Michael
Alan
Oh Ya Alan! it's been, let's see, 6 days now:lol:
Regarding Epic, I don't know what a Washington group means? Anyone is welcome as far as I'm concerned, but I would like people "if they are coming to my place anyway" to have a history here at AC.
After last Saturday, I have come to the conclusion that 10 people is pretty much the limit for attendees at my place. I had an amazing time, and I mean that in the truest sense. What a great bunch of people audiophiles are. So trustworthy and giving of their time and resources.
No worries Michael on your assessment of the dacs that were at play. I pretty much agree with you but I really did like both of the dacs that Jakej and Roy brought but still thought the Lampi was king in the end. So much clarity, kind of like your Don Sach pre I was lucky enough to here at the last G2G.
Laura, I will take you up on your offer but I can most likely only get my cousin and maybe his son to come over for music. The food will probably only make it easier but it would still just be them. Very kind of you to invite and it's much appreciated.
O.K., I think that's it for now. I feel really bad that Michael doesn't really like his speakers, I think he'll get used to them :lol:.
The Lampi Atlantic plus (tube recti) I see there is Balanced with Volume Control. That is the most maxxed out configuration short of going to the Golden Atlantic (copper case and premium parts , price circa 8K). Basic Atlantic single ended with solid State recti is circa 4K. Balanced, tube recti and Vol Control drove the price up to 6.5K as you said.
Unless your system is balanced, you waste money adding that. If you already have a great preamp, you save there as well. I would ALWAYS go for the tube recti and superclock on the Amanero USB input.
Please note that the Atlantic has ZERO Dac chips! Its R2R discreet ladder for PCM conversion and "chipless" DSD. Its a hell of a Dac.The output tubes are directly heated PENTODES in triode mode.
One last point, what was the recti used? There are expensive new production and vintage ones like Takatsuki 274b and WE vintage 274b. People also like the Lampi Kron 5u4g. However, the bargain of the century is the double mica/ceramic spacer 5R4GY from Fivre/Haltron/Zaerix/Brimar/CEI/Certron, etc. Forget overpriced Fivre and get one of the others from Ebay at less than $50 delivered! These tube are all the same, except for the labels stuck on them and they work soooo well with the Atlantic circuit...Totally blowing away the stock recti that comes with the Atlantic.
Jake,
I know that we discussed what tubes were in your MP-D2 but I don't recall which signal tubes you were using. Was it
 Tesla's? Also, I believe you're using a Mullard rectifier but don't recall what vintage.
Everybody at the gathering seemed to prefer the sound of your unit so now that I've blown one my signal tubes, due to my mishandling, it may be time for some rolling. Maybe your Mundorf S/G vs. my silvers had some influence on the sound too. :scratch:
Best regards,
http://www.cryoset.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_24&products_id=410&osCsid=imjsd12vvisqgi5gogsl7acub6 (http://www.cryoset.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_24&products_id=410&osCsid=imjsd12vvisqgi5gogsl7acub6)
And the rectifier is a Scott branded Mullard copper plate 5AR4 from the early 60's.
Since I haven't rolled any caps I do not know what the effect of them is.  I just went with the Mundorf Supreme S/G/O as that's what is recommended for running fully balanced.  Plus the previous owner had two already installed for single-ended operation and he bought them from SonicCraft so it was easy to get two more well matched ones as they had all the data form the first pair.  All four caps matched to within 0.02%!
Were you running balanced at the gathering? I was running single ended there ... I think. If it was hooked up balanced, the tubes weren't matched. They were different brands. The superfluous tubes are just placeholders, matched in voltage only but necessary for single ended to function. My DIY Tortuga pre is single ended.
My MP-D2 was in the system twice.  First time was early in the day before everyone got there and it was connected single-ended to Greg's preamp.  Later towards the end of the gathering it was installed with my A2 preamp and running fully balanced.  Which was better?  Too far apart in the day to tell.
Local guys,
Where can I find some decent Walnut planks, say 46x20x1 for top and bottoms of a rack?
Any local in the Puget Sound?
Thanks
Edensaw Woods  is the best hardwood supplier that I've encountered. They have an incredible walk around warehouse that's a pleasure to visit.
Are you looking for a finished or raw product?
These folks are in Portland and will have anything from a whole tree to craft products.  http://www.gobywalnut.com
If nothing else look for a Woodcraft store.
I tried for at least half hour to fix that image!
 Just a cheap little Chinese amp running a pair of 6L6 tubes for about 5wpc. We tried it with the Lampizator and it sounded like.... a $200 cheap Chinese amp, LOL.
Mike,
Now I know how to improve my system.  :D
When Mike came over he made me laugh. He told me he brought over the big guns, pulled that amp out of his rig and said "here's the Lampi" :lol:
Then he brought it in and I said, what amp is that? "that's my little pea shooter" :lol:
It didn't sound too bad really, as long as we had the server subs on  :thumb:
Like Jake mentioned I am buying Mike's Lampizator Atlantic, I just love how it sounds with the Super Vs. What's amazing is you can turn it all the way up with no distortion and that's using the power house Butler 2250 on a Coax rated at 97db.
I'm a very happy man for sure :D :D
Oh, and Mike, I have had nothing but trouble trying to get images to show up right side up. Somehow I finally got lucky and it worked, still not sure what I did different.
I took your advice and bought those JJ's. I got the super cryo ones but not the gold pins. I like them very much! :D Probably have about 25 hrs. on them. Nice to have quality current production 6922 tubes.
Hey Roy,
Glad you like them!
The current production vacuum tubes have taken a beating from critics and I think it's a shame because that conveys a bigger, overall message that it is junk when it's not.  I love tubes but can't afford the expensive NOS tubes and it would be nice if there was a review source just for the current production tubes.
NEW G2G ON THE HORIZON :thumb:
Hello All!
I'm happy to announce that I will be hosting a G2G on Saturday February 24th at Woody's Garage. People are welcome to show up at 11:00 and stay as long as we can stay awake. Many of you have been here before so welcome back. Many have shown interest but haven't made it yet so I look forward to seeing new faces. Let's get a count started to see how much interest we have. I think the conclusion is that I can realistically have 8 or 10 people at once until we just plain run out of room.
You are welcome to bring something food wise to share and of course whatever you would like to drink. I will have some beverages here and will be making something to contribute in the food dept.
A few people have already offered to bring some really exciting gear, I will let them post here what that is. If you have audio gear you would like to bring post it and we will see what we end up with. I currently have a Lampizator Atlantic Pre-Dac with all the bells and whistles. My speakers are still the Super V's and my source is a mac mini.
If you have any questions you can post them here or PM me. If you need my address or phone number you can PM me for that as well.
This is going to be really exciting. I for one am looking forward to getting together and hearing new gear. It's especially fun with a bunch of obsessed audio guys.
Happy Listening :thumb:
Oh, Goodness. May I go? 8)
I could bring my D Sachs amp and preamp, and the new Mivera Ice edge1200as SE amp, and a dB Audio Labs SE DAC. If I upgrade the tweeters in my Apollos, I’ll have them as well. However, I haven’t yet confirmed this with Lou.
Just found out my Servo amps will be shipping out on Monday so I will have them in plenty of time.
Hi Laura,
I don't have either  :lol:
I only use a mac mini for a source although  I do have a cheap CD player in the room I can hook up. I haven't tried it with my Lampi yet so don't know how it compares to my mac mini.
I would love to get a vinyl rig in there some day but of course no one would want to bring one to try.
Greg,
I got confirmation from Lou. I will take my Apollos to Ferndale for the new tweeter upgrade plus new midrange trim rings(!) <probably> on Thursday just prior to the G2G. I'll leave them with Lou for a day or two before driving to your place with all my gear. [I'm going to have to rent a minivan or an SUV to haul it all cuz my Taco just isn't big enough.] If I drop them off on Thursday, I may decide to drive to Vancouver BC to visit friends - not sure yet.
Anyway, this means I'll have the upgraded Apollos with me during the G2G. I'm not trying to force them on to you, but they'll be available if you want to hook them up.
My flight leaves for PDX in three days!
Hi Michael,
That sounds good, if it would help, I'm happy to let you borrow my Buick Enclave. You could drop your car off here and take it for as long as needed. I'm fine with bringing your speakers in for a listen if you want. My guess is people would enjoy hearing two different types of speakers in the same room. Plus getting to hear them on so much different equipment at the same meeting.
Hopefully the N.W. gang is seeing this thread active so they don't miss this opportunity :thumb:.
Thanks,
Hi Jeff,
I would be happy to have you over, I'll PM you about guests but it shouldn't be a problem.
I understand you have a Digital Amp Company amp? We will have the new 1200SE from Mike at Miverna Audio here thanks to Michael. I don't know if you would have any interest in bringing your amp over? If you did I'm guessing the people at the G2G would really like to hear those two amps side by side. I bet there are also a LOT of people on AC that would like to hear comparisons of the two. I don't think anyone has done that yet, at least that I have heard of.
So...I'm here at work on a quiet Saturday and saw the latest couple of posts to this thread and decided to catch me some Clifford Brown as I have none of his work in my home library.  Fired up the iPhone and Tidal and man oh man, what an incredible talent!  So sad it was just as incredibly short, he died in a car accident at age 25.
Greg, if you like jazz trumpet then you need to hear Clifford Brown.  Yea, pun intended. :oops:
reminds of another great artist that died way too soon. I'm a huge fan of Jeff Buckley who died way too young, 1966 to 1997. Jeff drowned in the Mississippi River just shy of his 31st birthday. David Bowie once said if he was stranded on a deserted Island and could only have one album, Grace from Jeff Buckley would be it. Totally different music but I was reminded just how short life can be and how great people can be taken away just like that.
I'll give Clifford Brown a listen today.
I read this somewhere many years ago: "Clifford Brown made an enormous impact on the jazz world.  He could play with incredible speed and precision, and became know for a mind-boggling capacity to improvise long, complex and stunningly well structured solos."
From the sampling I listened to today I would say that statement is absolutely true.  He was active from 1949-1956 yet performed and recorded with many bebop jazz greats from that period.
Hello all!
Hoping this finds you well. Our G2G is coming up soon! Anyone who hasn't committed and wants to come speak up now so we can get a head count. We still have room for a few more.
It looks like we are going to have some fantastic gear this time and I for one can't wait! Also, if anyone wants to play their own music on CD I can either slip it into my mac mini or we will have a CD player this time. And more good news, It sounds like for the first time we'll have a TT. So, that is also an option for bringing your own music.
And, for those who have already confirmed they are coming on the 24th, can't wait to see you :hyper:
P.S. Please see my post #342 for details.
Status Update
My back will not allow me to move my speakers from my living room, down a flight of stairs, and into the bed of my Tacoma...and then back up those same stairs on Sunday when I roll into Corvallis after the G2G. Therefore, I have decided to postpone my speaker driver upgrade until sometime this summer. There's a new and improved tweeter now available plus there's a new midrange driver thingy. [Don't laugh. Thingies are highly sought after.]
I will bring my D Sachs amp and preamp, and the new DAC that I am auditioning now. I'll bring power cords, usb cords, 1 pair of RCA ICs, and my Mac Mini as source. I could bring my Pi Audio UberBUSS if anyone is interested.
The DAC is an R2R NOS SS DAC made by Eric Hider of dB Audio Labs. I had asked Eric to upgrade the caps to Jupiter Cu caps.  :drool: I honestly wasn't expecting to be impressed with this DAC, but from the get go it sounds fantastic. [Get go is zero burn in.] It's up to 40+ hours now and it sounds so analog to my ears. I'm impressed.
I'm going to stay in Olympia Thursday night and somewhere north Friday night so I can roll into Greg's driveway Saturday morning without having to battle traffic and 5 hours of boring freeway in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Michael
Whew!  I read that different than you typed it.  Begs the question which driver(s)?
Yeah, I'm not happy about it.  But it's my dad's 92nd B-day and I can't really miss that.  No tellin' how many he has left.
Last time Greg and I chatted we discussed the possibility of a road trip to Kelowna, BC to meet Jay, Don, and whoever else for some audio fun and check out the area.  More in the late spring to early summer.  Too much snow now.  Heck, we are getting snow tonight here in Tri-Cities!
Jake,
There’s a new tweeter that has replaced the current one. The midrange bracket or outside ring is new. It’s hard for me to imagine better sounding Apollos, but I’ll take Lou’s word that it’s worth the hassle of getting them to Ferndale and lugging them back.
If Melody allowed it, I would eagerly join that Kelowna adventure. I’ve been there twice and can’t wait to go back again. I can’t say enough good things about Jay and Don. Oh, and the natural beauty of that region rocks!
Your father’s birthday is more important than this G2G. Make the most of it. My father passed 13 months ago, so now I try to be near my mother a lot more than before.
Guys,
Sorry to say but I cannot make it  Wife scheduled an event in the afternoon and since Greg's place is a good hour with no traffic, away, I'll have to pass.
Having said that, I would love to host and event, though it would be limited as the dedicated room is small.
Thanks Greg!
Well, unfortunately the Miverna amps didn't get done in time. I am really exited about hearing Don's stuff thou.
Jake, really sorry you can't make it. I was really hoping you could be here this time. I'll keep you posted and give you my opinion of whatever we end up playing with.
Well...whatever you end up with I'm sure it will be interesting.  Pictures, gentlemen, everybody get their phone out and snap some photos to post, please!
I have joined lot 6 for a Purepower SE in Tuxedo casing.  I asked Mike for mine to be made with black anodized front, back, top, and bottom and the heatsinks in natural silver and vapor-blasted.  I'll get it in April but I need it now, lol!  I just picked up a pair of PMC DB1 Gold Edition with factory stands.  I recently acquired a JL Audio Fathom F112 and a pair of the new Paradigm Shift A2 Active speakers for my Home Theater set up.  Combined with my Paradigm Active/40 for the fronts it should be a pretty nice 4.1 system.  So I cannot wait to get this move over with so I can play with my new toys.  And a few weeks after getting settled in a new Purepower SE will show up to add to the equipment harem.
I won't be able to attend BUT if you guys want to try out the Mivera amp, you are welcome to swing by Jackson Park golf course in the morning tomorrow on your way to the GTG. Please PM me if one of you is interested in coordinating to pickup. I'll trust in the faith of AC members here to let you guys try it out.
I'm at the golf course for my son's First Tee golf lessons and he gets started around 10AM. So any time between 10-11AM, if that works for you guys. Otherwise, PICS PLEASE and one of these days, I'd love to be able to join you guys for a listening session. I may even be able to host over the summer as well! (Got to get some stuff done on the house before being able to have folks over.)
Hi Dave,
Thank you for the offer, it is very much appreciated. I will be stuck here getting everything ready for the G2G. The only person that might be coming from the South of my place would be Michael. Not sure where he's staying tonight thou or what time he is coming to my place yet in the morning?
Have fun with your son on the golf course, good stuff for sure :thumb:
Hey, guys.
Michael made it up to Kirkland when he decided he had to eat something, so he (I) stopped at the first Chinese restaurant I saw. It was okay. Then, too full and exhausted from a long day, I asked my crystal ball (Expedia app) to find me accommodations. I’m now in Woodinville. [I hadn’t known it existed until a couple hours ago.] Wineries and breweries abound it seems.
I checked Google Maps for the golf course and wasn’t exactly thrilled that I’m on the wrong side of the lake (is it a lake?). I was kinda hoping for an easy morning, breakfast, coffee followed by a short drive to Greg’s place. I still need to buy some food and beer to contribute. I’ll stop bellyaching. Lemme see what time it is when I check out of the motel.
If you see a blue Tacoma pickup with Oregon plates, there’s an excellent chance the driver will be mostly bald and wearing glasses. He’s been labeled “audiophile”, so he’s most likely harmless. :thumb:
Another great meet at Greg's :thumb: We had a smaller turnout this time but it worked out well as we were able to hear a lot of great equipment combos.
The standout for me was Greg's Lampizator Atlantic DAC paired with Michael's Don Sachs amplifier. Lots of ambience and detail with a very smooth fatigue free sound. The other was Michael's Don Sachs amplifier and preamp with Flo's Don Sachs phono amp and his beautiful Roksan turntable. This is the first time we had vinyl at Greg's place and I think we were all mighty impressed! Michael also brought a new DAC from DB Audio Labs that I think sounded very good for the coin.
We fired up the LIO at the end of the day and I thought it sounded good despite an odd hum coming through the left speaker and what I perceived as a little lack of power. Still, given the size of Greg's room and the volume we were playing it at, the LIO's 30wpc did really well.
I have some pictures I will get posted soon. Thanks again to Greg, Michael and Flo, all in all it was a great day!
Mike, Thanks for posting the pictures. I would post some more but they are the basically the same.
What a fun day it was, so glad to have some great guys here again.
I was very impressed with everything that we hooked up. The big surprise for me was the db audio labs dac that Michael brought. It sounded very good with Michael's Don Sach amp and preamp. He has a really nice combo with that set up. We didn't hear the dac with anything else since my Lampi is a dac and pre. Combo. and so is Mike's Lio. Michael's Don Sach combo amp and pre amp was really good. I loved the subtle tube sound it had and still with a ton of detail in the presentation. I think the Don Sach pre amp had a little more bloom or tube sound compared to my Lampi with Don Sach amp. Both combinations had a lot of detail so I think it's a matter of preference which one you would like better.
Thanks to Flo (Dixi) for bringing his Don Sach phono stage. It was really fun having his wonderful turntable to listen to and even better having all matching Don Sach gear. The turntable was just wonderful to listen to and that analog sound just goes right to the soul when the right music is playing. Really nice to finally hear vinyl in my room.
I thought the combination of my Lampi Atlantic and Michael's Don Sach amplifier was really good also. Like I mentioned just a little less bloom with lots of detail and very smooth. The Sach amp had more than enough power to drive my Super Vs at 97db. You would think that would be a no brainer at 70wpc but I’ve been surprised a few times by just how much amp it takes to really drive the top end. I'm in the market for an amp and this one just went right up to the top.
Mike's Lio is another wonderful piece of gear with all the magic and a good combination of amp, pre amp and dac. It also sounded very good with the Super Vs. Again a lot of detail but not etchy at all. Very easy on the ears and certainly not fatiguing. Like Mike mentioned we had a buzz in the left speaker for some reason that wasn't there with any other gear. Not sure what that was but it sounded good just the same. Like Mike, I also think it didn't have enough grunt to drive the Super Vs. Like I mentioned, the Super Vs sometimes surprise me with how much power they need to really get them cranking. We were listening at pretty high levels for a lot of the time. It's always fun with the servo bass to let it light up sometimes. Did I say we were having a lot of fun?
Anyway, thanks to everyone who made it and for those who didn't make sure you keep up on this thread for the next one. Anyone else who would like to come by sometime is welcome. I look forward to seeing some new faces next time and it's always a good place to hear new gear.
Take Care,
Greg
Sounds like a great GTG: small group of individuals, a limited set of gear, and more time to listen and enjoy the music!
If schedule permits, I'll definitely bring the Mivera Icepower amp I put together. I'd also be willing to lug my Spatial M3 Turbo S speakers as I think they would absolutely be allowed to "breathe" and fill that wonderful looking room of yours gregfisk!
Hey Dave,
Yes, it was small this time but with the gear we had on site it was really fun. We got to listen to each combination for a fair amount of time.
It would be great if you brought your Mivera amp over. I've been wanting to hear one ever since Mike started his thread. It would also be killer if you brought your Spatials over. I don't think anyone has tried them side by side with the Super Vs yet. That's what's so fun about this hobby, trying out different gear, especially in the same place at the same time. I read on AC of someone using the 12" servo subs with Spatials. That would also be fun to try. We could move my speakers and just hook up the 4 servo subs with your Spatials. That sounds like fun to me.
I bet I could even get a couple of these guys to come back over for that :thumb:
Let's keep in touch and thanks again for offering up your Mivera amp. Hope you had a good golf day with your boy.
Take Care,
Greg
Hi all,
Just registered on this site and am relatively new to the HiFi world.  I’m adding to my system as I can, but currently have a custom, hand made st70 clone with KT77 tubes, inexpensive NAD preamp and Klipsch Forte II’s.  I’ve borrowed a pair of Spatial Audio M4 speakers from Gig Harbor Audio and may buy them as they sound really good in our house.  Anyway,  I’m not much of a poster but will be lurking, but not in a weird way.
Thanks!
Welcome Derek. I've been guilty of being busy with life and not being able to attend any of the gatherings myself. Hope to one time this year and that should get the ball rolling!
I have a pair of M3TurboS's that aren't hooked up to anything and if you're close by, you're welcome to hear them with your gear. PM and we'll figure something out.
Peter, thanks for keeping this thread alive!
It's 2020 so, I think it's about time I host!  I have a big house but a small listening room, really only good for three (3) max!
I am in Gig Harbor and would love to have a few of you over!
Not like there's a line to attend, but let me know if you're interested.
My system is as follows:
Magico M3 Speakers
Marantz MA9S2 Mono Amps, SA7S2 Preamp and SA10 spinner
TT is a custom plinth with VPI components
Cartridge are a Benz Micro ACE Mono and an ACE SL, both low output.  I still need to fine tune the ACE SL as I just sold the Ortofon Cadenza Black, and miss it already!
Cables, those are all DIY, btw.
Let's see what weekend works, maybe late February?
Thanks and please respond and hopefully there's interest and we can make something work.
Best,
Tuan
Late February is wide open for me. I'll text Gregfisk to see if he's interested.
The 29th would be best for me. I've got a Feb. 28th afternoon meeting in Vancouver, WA. I can stay the night in Vancouver/Salmon Creek and drive to Gig Harbor Saturday morning, or I could spend the night in/near Tacoma and be all rested and bright-eyed for the G2G.
Greg replied and said he cannot make it. He's going to be visiting his daughter.
Both of you are hereby ordered to heal. When I read about Jeff's foot surgery, I nearly shot off a PM offering to give him(you) a ride. Your drive distances to and from are surely much, much shorter than my drive. Now add in Tuan's broken arm....sigh....Tuan, take care of that arm. Broken bones are very painful.
Some day......
Tuan,
I just signed up for audiocircle.  Evidently I need to post 3 coherent messages.  I would love to hear some other systems in the Seattle area. I've been retired for 10 years and got deep into the audio hobby.  I enjoy refinishing and rehabbing speakers and receivers. I estimate 50 pairs of Infinity, Klipsch, and ADS went thru my garage.  My current system is Cronus Magnum II with MMGs and Kappa 8.1's.  Sources are SL1700MK2 with AT120Eb,
Marantz CD5004, KT5020,and Lenovo/TIDAL thru Dragonfly Cobalt. Backup solid state is rebuilt Yam M4/CX2.  I'm in Kent.
Cool hobby.  I did some DIY stuff when I had time, but these days with young kids and sports, work and a brtoken arm, not much a doing for sure!
Hey everyone, just joined and looking to communicate with some other Puget Sound area audio geeks. Getting transitioned to working from home this year has rekindled my audiophile tinkering side which lead to more YouTube videos which lead me here. I'm in the South Sound area near Tacoma but do get to spend a bunch of time online now that I spend my working days in a small repurposed bedroom.
Hi! I’m Keith, first time post here on AC. In Seattle. Been into 2 channel for over 20 years, but nowadays mostly headphone listening due to young children. Main rig w digital front end, VTL monoblocks and Sonus Fabers. Office rig just got upgraded to a Vinnie Rossi Lio driving Audeze LCD2s, and I’m looking now to add my first turntable to the headphone setup... which brought me online and to here!
Glad there’s a PNW group.
What are some recommended places in the PNW to look for used records? Are record stores preferred vs donation stores or garage sales?
Are there local vinyl swaps?
